J'ai reçu en héritage le goût de la lecture et l'amour des livres....Merci à mes parents...

J'espère transmettre cette passion à mes propres enfants...

Inheritance :The passion of reading and books

Heavy storms last year caused sections of the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty trail to collapse; the only positive being that fallen rocks and shifted banks have made for a few different compositions.

This Neckless is not real Diamonds or Pearls but is still one of my favorite pieces of jewelry as it was given to me by my Grandmother.

This watch belonged to my grandmother's grandfather's brother (great-great uncle). It is placed upon a letter from great-great grandfather to his mother that, along with his many other Civil War letters is contained in a book of family history.

The story: two brothers went to war. Martin Luther Vincent enlisted in the 112th Illinois Infantry and a short time later his younger brother William Henry Vincent enlisted in the 42nd Illinois Infantry. Both saw extensive battle activity, and both were wounded. When their enlistment terms were up, both reenlisted to fight on. Martin Luther came home. William Henry did not. We know of his fate from letters sent home to their mother by Martin Luther and by my tracing of troop movements. He was shot in the face during an assault on Cheatham's Hill, a particularly bloody part of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He died several days later and is buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery. I shudder to think of his lingering suffering.

A quote from a previous letter from Martin Luther to their mother: "I have just returned from the 42nd Regt. and have the worst news to write to you that I ever had and that is my poor brother William is dead. The boys said he had a very bad wound through the face. It was done in a charge. They said he walked off the field. I have been with Charley Jackson. He said William couldn't say anything so they could understand him. O wasn't they (sic) too bad.... He must have suffered a great deal with such a wound as he had....Dear Mother and sisters, it is the hardest thing for me to do that I ever done to write this letter. I don't hardly know what to write to you that would be any comfort at the present time...."

Martin Luther Vincent, my dear great-great grandfather, I hold your brother's watch, given by you to your oldest grandson and he being childless, given by him to his oldest nephew, (my father). I hold it in reverence and honor to the memory of you both, and will pass on this story to my son and to his son. However sir, I am sorry to say that your priceless Civil War letters ended up in one of my cousin's hands and her worthless husband sold them on eBay. Thank God, another cousin had already preserved their writings in the family history book.

My maternal grandmother was a fabulous quilter. I inherited a love for quilting that I believe she gave me. Although she died when I was quite young I've always admired her work and do have one of her quilts although it is pretty thread bare now. So although this is not a picture of a quilt, it is one of the key ingredients that goes into the making of my favorite type of blanket. Happy Macro Monday everyone!

A brooch that I inherited from my grandmother. No precious metal or stones just pretty.

I seem to inherit old books for some reason!

Time in a Bottle

If I could save time in a bottle

The first thing that I'd like to do

Is to save every day

'Til eternity passes away

Just to spend them with you....

For those little memories of my grandmother and that good old Jim Croce song.

A friend of mine found this little bottle on a building site and gave it to me. It is only about 1 1\4 inches high

My father's wristwatch, my grandfather's walking cane on a smoking table inherited from my father's aunt.

The Karelian Plaited Ribbon

"Under a juniper-tree the bones sang, scattered and shining

We are glad to be scattered, we did little good to each

other,

Under a tree in the cool of day, with the blessing of sand,

Forgetting themselves and each other, united

In the quiet of the desert. This is the land which ye

Shall divide by lot. And neither division nor unity

Matters. This is the land. We have our inheritance."

My mother's citrine and opal daisy ring was a gift for her sixteenth birthday. I haven't technically inherited it yet but will one day, hopefully very far into the future.

My mother's grandma measuring spoons and a page of her cooking book.

From series "cocoons", this one is probably my favourite so far.

When I got my first car, my grandmother gave me this "travel charm" that she said my grandfather always took with him both when driving & travelling to keep him safe. It's been on my key ring ever since

For 2016: one photo each day (79/366) and for Macro Monday theme "inheritance". My wife inherited this miniature teacup from her grandmother, who collected these things. Although it appears to be made for a dollhouse, it bears the stamp of an English china maker, and was acquired from an antique store in New York City. For scale I placed a normal size coffee mug behind the teacup.

About a year ago, one of my lovely neighbors moved away and left me her collection of nine decorative teacups.

For Macro Monday - Inheritance

This is a perfume bottle that was my Grandmothers. She used to carry it with her. Back in the day Grandfather and Grandmother used to travel all over the world. I often wonder how many countries it has been in. It was given to my mother and then given to me. This is the only thing I have that was my Grandmothers and my mothers. A cherished treasure for me.

Lowther Castle, located near Penrith in Cumbria was originally built in the 18th century. In 1957 the Duke who inherited it decided it was too much bother for him to keep and had most of it demolished. His words were “it was the least of his inheritance”. Eventually, the next generation had it restored and it's now a popular sight. It was one of the most beautiful castles we visited, with extensive grounds and gardens.

This building perhaps embodies Dunedin's wealthy inheritance. During the city's most prosperous years this railway station was the country's busiest, handling up to 100 trains each day.

Though there have been many debates about whether the building is actually beautiful or not, the overall effect is undeniably grandiose and the station is New Zealand’s most photographed building.

Construction began in 1903 and the station was officially opened in 1906. Dunedin's fourth railway station, it was designed in the fashionable, desirable and highly expensive Edwardian Baroque style. Unusually though, architect George Troup uses an experimental collaboration of Classical and Neo-Gothic imagery, which creates a grand and classically regimented structure, with an assorted and asymmetric countenance.

For Macro Monday's theme 'Inheritance'

There was much I could have posted for this theme but since my wonderful Hellebores are out in force, this seemed the way to go.

My Grandad used to grow these 'Christmas Roses' when I was a little girl, I was always amazed to see them when there was nothing else at that time growing in the garden. I have inherited his passion for them and have not only some of his plants still thriving in my garden but other varieties. I love them :-)

HMM and good week to all !

A gift that my grandma gave to my mom for her wedding and my mom gave to me for my wedding...classic useless gift before today :-)

Wimpole Hall is a country house located within the civil parish of Wimpole in the English county of Cambridgeshire. The hall and estate is located 9 miles southwest from the city of Cambridge.

The house was built between 1640 and 1650 in the Neoclassical style and then extended in 1713-1716. The house was remodelled in the mid and late 18th century and has been Grade 1 listed since 1967.

In 1942, Capt. George Bambridge and his wife, Elsie (daughter of Rudyard Kipling) purchased it after having been tenants since 1938. They used the inheritance left to them by her father, and the royalties from his books to refurbish the house and grounds. Elsie Bambridge bequeathed the house and the estate to the National Trust when she died in 1976.

I have 6 Christmas cacti ... and I've inherited each one from a woman in my life. I've named each of these lovely plants for that special woman. This light pink one is Winifred ... named for my Grandma. My mom gave her the parent plant and later took a slip from it. When my mom died, I inherited Winifred.

Winifred enjoys my sunny window so much that she's putting on a bonus spring show this year!
