1). ITALY / Predappio - Heirs demand cash for Benito Mussolini tomb. The Sunday Times (10 August 2020).
The descendants of Benito Mussolini have stirred controversy in his home town by demanding that his tomb becomes a recognised monument, with the taxpayer paying for its upkeep.
The crypt at the cemetery in Predappio, in the central region of EmiliaRomagna, has long drawn neofascist sympathisers, who fill the visitor’s book with accolades to Italy’s wartime ruler.
The crypt has been opening only three times a year since 2017 after a volunteer who tended the tomb died. The days it opens are the anniversaries of Mussolini’s birth, death and his march on Rome to take power in 1922, and Predappio fills with stiff-armed saluting devotees.
The family, including his granddaughter Alessandra Mussolini, 57, a right-wing politician, have asked the mayor to give the tomb “monumental” status and pay for attendants so it can open daily. The family’s lawyer sent a letter to the mayor, published by Il Resto del Carlino, a newspaper based in Bologna, stressing the tomb’s “clear interest” to Italy. It calls for more staff at the cemetery to assist the “constant flow of devotees who come to pay homage”.
Mussolini was noted for his laws that removed Jews from public life and his alliance with Hitler before he was killed by partisans in 1945. Many on the right pay homage to his authoritarian rule and investment in infrastructure.
“The family want the tomb to become a national monument up there with the tomb of Garibaldi, who helped unify Italy,” Giorgio Frassineti, the town’s former left-wing mayor, said. “We are talking about a dictator who passed racial laws and ruined the country — it’s unacceptable.”
Mr Frassineti lost his post last year to Roberto Canali, a rightwinger who said he was considering the family’s request and was keen to have the tomb open daily. “It will help the cafés, restaurants and shops in the town,” he said.
Traders selling fascist truncheons and other memorabilia are also keen.
Mr Frassineti said: “This is all about money. The family are saying to the mayor: if you want the tomb open every day, you pay for it.”
Rachele Mussolini, another granddaughter of the dictator and a Rome city councillor with the hard-right Brothers of Italy party, told The Times that the family had other priorities. “We just want to see the crypt opened safely, with full transparency,” she said.

2). ITALY / Predappio - Mussolini's granddaughter turns tour guide: Descendent of dictator to give talks on 'rise and fall of fascism' history holiday in Italy - and will also take groups around the family crypt. Daily Mail U.K., (28/09/2018).
Rachele Mussolini will address holidaymakers on an 8-day history tour in Italy.
She is a politician for the right-wing Fratelli d'Italia ('Brothers of Italy') party.
The tour costs £2,895 per person and includes visits to key Mussolini sites.
Rachele Mussolini, the youngest grandchild of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, has turned tour guide. She will address holidaymakers on a history tour in Italy called 'Duce! The Rise and Fall of Italian Fascism', run by Historical Trips. Rachele, 43, herself a politician for the right-wing Fratelli d'Italia ('Brothers of Italy') party, will meet the tour in Predappio, the Mussolini family's hometown. She will also open the family crypt in Predappio, which holds the remains of Benito Mussolini and other family members, for the group to visit.
Historical Trips' co-founder Nigel Jones said: 'We believe that this is the first time since the dictator's downfall and death in 1945 that a member of the Mussolini family has spoken to a British tour group, and this is in keeping with Historical Trips' pioneering ethos.
'We look forward to welcoming guests on this ground-breaking tour.'
The 2018 'Duce!' tour has now sold out, but the 2019 offering has availability and will run from 2nd – 9th April.
A second 2019 departure will be announced in due course, Historical Trips said.
