I recently visited the ‘High Society’ exhibition at the Wellcome Trust and was very surprised to learn via a huge wall mounted infographic that the annual amount of money spent globally on the tobacco market is $625 billion as compared to $200 billion on the total illegal drug market and $825 billion on the entire pharmaceutical market (unfortunately i couldn’t find a version of the infographic image i’m talking about but have found more by same guy, David McCandless, on his website at www.informationisbeautiful.net.) This led me to thinking just how much the huge tobacco companies need to continue to sell us their product – and have us buy it. They have so much invested in continuing having millions of addicts that it boggles the mind. In some twisted way this led to the creation of Tobacco Bloom. So there you have it.
‘Tobacco Bloom’ comes on either paper or my new favourite medium – slate! It seems that everything works better on slate and it just looks lovely framed (but with no glass in as it’s such a tactile surface).
Cheers

My reworking of the brilliant Land Art Generator images 'Suface Area Required To Power The World' with one alternative energy source added :)
Originals are here:
www.landartgenerator.org/blagi/archives/127
===========
here's my maths (probably wrong, please correct me if so)
total world energy needs per year:
198,721,800,000,000 kwH
average energy output of a human per hour
0.1 KW per human (100 watts)
365 days at 24 hours a day = 8760 energy hours per year per human
0.1 KW x 8760 hours = 876 KWh energy generated per human per year
world energy needs divided by human supply
198,721,800,000,000 / 876 = 226,851,369,863 humans required
Human body occupies
2m x 1m = 2square metres
assuming machinery and spacing between human batteries
4m x 2m = 8 square metres
requires
1, 814,810,958,904 metres for all human batteries
1.8 trillion square metres
or
18,148,810,958 = 18 billion square kilometres
world land surface area is:
148,940,000 square kilometres (wikipedia)
so would require 221 billion humans to be stacked 121 rows high across the entire land surface of the earth.
very dystopian!

What can and can't you do online in the People's Republic?
Most of the big social websites - Facebook, Twitter, YouTube - are blocked. Many familiar sites, such as Wikipedia, remain but with entire sections or contentious pages disappeared by The Great Firewall. Porn is pretty much outlawed.
Data in this area is difficult to come by. ConceptDoppler.org is a good source but most of the information dates back to 2008. Censored search terms and online materials often vary from region to region. Sites are routinely blocked and then unblocked, sometimes on a weekly basis. You can check it for yourself in this Google Doc.

The British National Party is a racist right-wing political party in the UK which has recently seen minor but noticeable gains in membership.
I was curious about how much of their support was actually related to non-white populations.
Overall the correlation is not that large.
Though I think it's interesting that there's significant BNP membership is areas *around* populations of non-white communities. Norfolk, West Wales etc.
Interesting too that BNP membership in London - an incredibly ethnically diverse city - is very low. Only Upminster on the London / Essex borders has significant BNP membership.
Any other observations on the data?

Billions spent on this. Billions spent on that. What does it all look like? Hopefully The Billion Pound-o-Gram will help.
This image arose out of a frustration with the reporting of billion dollar amounts in the media. That is, they’re reported as self-evident facts, when, in fact, they’re mind-boggling and near incomprehensible without context. But they can start to be understood visually and relatively, IMHO.

Interesting how the landscape changes when you move out of just using 'numbers of cases' to look at the situation.
Argentina has relatively low infection rates, for example. But a very high death rate.
UK is being threatened by a pandemic (according to the media). But its death rate is lower than the average.
