Client
L'Oréal Recherche is the research and product development division of the global health and beauty product company. The intranet for this division must support 3,000 researchers working in France, the United States, Japan and China. The intranet consisted of over 50 websites, professional applications and databases on subjects including biology, patents, hair color and laboratory security.
Use Case
I created organization diagrams for the entire intranet portal, defining the global navigation that would help researchers find the information they needed according to basic ergonomic principles. To demonstrate the utility of the information architecture and test the visual design, I developed the HR section for testing within the organization.

Just like in life, a really big part of being comfortable in your surroundings is just knowing where you are. Even if users don't ultimately get lost, they'll feel uneasy using your website or app if you don't remind them from time-to-time (with a heading or a breadcrumb or something else) where they are in it. The people behind The Verge, a digital tech magazine, get this. They give users a sidebar that follows them down an article as they read. No forgetting your place anymore. It makes readers more comfortable, adds context and provides jump points for those who may just want to get to specific bits.
When we create digital interfaces, simplicity is a constant issue. What is simple and what is not? How do we take into account simplicity in our everyday lives?

Traditional marketing has been demarcated by periods known as campaigns.
Software, however, can change campaigns to conversations. Conversations are beautifully amorphous and adaptable with fundamentally different dynamics. By understanding the possibilities of the digital world, the elements of campaign thinking can become good conversation.
Obviously this screen shot is huge but viewing the page in the browser is a fairly orderly experience.
My good friends Lynn Boyden and Matt Fetchko joined me for a relaxing walk around lower Manhattan on an unseasonably warm October day. This is in Gramercy Park. The woman on the right clearly does not understand our facination with IA deliverables. How odd...
