Influence: 100 squares made for an exhibition at Lords Cricket Grounds, London.
Technique: Machine embroidered, machine pieced and hand sewn silk and organza; double sided quilt.

The Springfield Art Association will host an opening reception for a nationally juried ceramic exhibition entitled Shapes of Influence on Friday evening, August 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. Awards and a gallery talk by juror Simon Levin will occur at 6:45 PM.
The show will be on display in the SAA's M.G. Nelson Family Gallery from August 3-September 1 and features work from over two dozen states and Canada.

People talk about who has made the largest influence on their lives and they usually list people like Albert Einstein, or Ghandi, or Martin Luther King Jr. Nobody wants to admit their heroes are people like Sgt. Bilko or Secret Squirrel.
After thinking about it, I realized that these two men have had the largest impact on me. Through them, I learned self-sacrifice, honor, the perils of substance abuse, and how to carry yourself like a man. Their influence has led me to become a humanist, an environmentalist, and a whole slew of ist's and ism's that have ultimately made me a better and stronger person.
Not bad for a fictional character and a persona created to sell tickets.

Susan Athey has spent her career at the intersection of economics and technology, shaping the way we understand markets, digital platforms, and the power of data. A pioneering economist, she has influenced everything from auction theory to the role of artificial intelligence in decision-making. Her work doesn’t stay confined to academia—it has helped shape corporate strategy, public policy, and even the foundations of modern tech regulation.
Athey’s research spans a wide range of topics, but at its core is a drive to understand how digital platforms shape economic behavior. She is the first woman to win the John Bates Clark Medal—awarded to the most influential American economist under 40—she has long been recognized as a leader in the field. She has advised major tech firms, including Microsoft, on machine learning applications and algorithmic market design. But her role is not just one of insight—it is one of action.
When I photographed Athey at her home near Stanford on February 20, 2025, she had recently completed her tenure as an appointee in the Justice Department, where she played a central role in shaping modern antitrust policy. Just as the news broke that the Trump administration planned to retain the 2023 Merger Guidelines, it became clear how significant her contributions had been. As a principal author of these guidelines, she helped establish the economic rationale for blocking mergers that allowed dominant firms to entrench their power—whether by acquiring complementary products that could be leveraged to sustain monopolies or by enabling major digital platforms to eliminate competitive threats.
Her team at the DOJ pursued major monopolization cases, taking on industry giants like Live Nation/Ticketmaster, UnitedHealth, Google, and Apple. One of the most consequential victories came in a case exposing Google’s multi-billion-dollar payments to Apple to maintain search defaults—an arrangement that reinforced Google’s dominance in online search. The success of these cases underscored the growing role of economic analysis in defining the limits of corporate power in the digital age.
Her home reflected the balance she maintains between rigorous intellectual work and a rich personal life. Books filled the rooms, covering economics, policy, and technology, but also literature and philosophy. Her husband, Nobel laureate Guido Imbens, was there, and the two economists moved easily between topics—discussing research, policy, and art.
Athey is not just an observer of economic systems; she is a force in shaping them. Whether designing better algorithms for online marketplaces, crafting legal arguments in high-stakes regulatory battles, or mentoring the next generation of economists, her impact is undeniable. She operates with a rare mix of precision and pragmatism—able to model an abstract problem with mathematical rigor, but always with an eye toward real-world consequences.
In a digital age where power is increasingly concentrated, Athey’s work is a reminder that economics is not just about theory—it is about accountability, fairness, and the systems that shape our daily lives.

The three men in this photo are sitting near the door of a polling place, hoping to influence voters in the moments before they step into the booth. In the past, I've even been blocked by candidates and their staff, as I tried to enter the door. Once, when I reported to authorities inside that a woman with a clipboard wouldn't let me in without first hearing her speech, the person in charge shrugged and said, "It's a free country."
The guys in this photo had been standing earlier in the day, handing out printed propaganda.
In the past, and in other places, I've stood in plain view to photograph this sort of activity. Invariably, the staffers ask me why I'm pointing a camera at them. I just say that I'm doing a blog. So this time, I took a shot from my car as I waited for the red light.

This bear is influenced by the most famous of Shakespeare’s stage directions ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’ from Act III of The Winter’s Tale. The bard is from the Midlands and Shakesbear is a fitting tribute to mark the recent 400th anniversary of his death. The design references the iconic portrait of the playwright by Engraver Martin Droeshout from 1623.
Repeating The Big Hoot’s multi-award-winning formula, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity and Wild in Art have teamed up once again to present The Big Sleuth!
To most people, the word ‘sleuth’ means a private detective, but it’s also the collective noun for a group of bears! Bizarre but true. Birmingham has brought both definitions together this summer by bringing the sun bear, the world’s smallest species of bear (now threatened with extinction), to the region for the second free, public-art trail!
The trail, which culminates on Sunday 17th September, is hoping to attract thousands of families, tourists and residents to the region. Hoping they discover places they’ve never visited before, as well as appreciate the beautiful pieces of art!
Each striking sculpture on the trail tells a different story, whether it is raising awareness of the children’s hospital, the plight of the sun bear, celebrating a community, the city’s industrial heritage or a famous film character or artist.
At the end of the trail, the large bears together with the special celebrity bear cubs will be auctioned off in October to raise vital funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity. The Big Sleuth’s predecessor, The Big Hoot, raised over £500,000 for the charity at auction, and The Big Sleuth aims to do the same.
The Big Sleuth bear has been created specifically for Birmingham.
Created by Guy McKinley and developed by Wild in Art, our bear sculpture has been designed to act as a canvas for artists, schools and communities to showcase the creativity and uniqueness of Birmingham. The world’s smallest species of bear, the Sun Bear is also known as the Honey Bear as it likes to eat vast quantities of it - using its trademark incredibly long tongue to scoop it all up. The Sun Bear originates from South Asia and will bring out the explorer and traveller in all of us to ensure we all get more active to walk, jog, run or cycle the trail.
