Cumbernauld, a small village in Dunbartonshire and now in North Lanarkshire, was designated a New Town in 1955 and was intended to act as an overspill location for both industries and population from nearby Glasgow. The expansion was overseen by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation that existed until 1996 when, in common with other New Town authorities, the Corporation was wound up. The original target for population was around 50,000 although this was revised up towards 70,000 in later years. The current population is closer to the orginal proposals.

This eye-catching advert from the 1968 Official Handbook and Industrial Review for Glasgow shows the CDC attracting industry to the New Town by using 32 Blue Bottom Whales. The 'Standard Factories' were purpose built units intended to be flexible enough to attract a range of tenants without the need for specialised construction or building.
