Norman Bel Geddes (1893-1958) was an American theatrical and industrial designer. He opened an industrial-design studio in 1927, and designed a wide range of commercial products, from cocktail shakers to tear drop cars to radio cabinets. Bel Geddes designed the General Motors Pavilion, known as Futurama, for the 1939 New York World's Fair, which was an enormously influential installation.
Bel Geddes's book "Magic Motorways" (1940) promoted advances in highway design and transportation, foreshadowing the Interstate Highway System ("there should be no more reason for a motorist who is passing through a city to slow down than there is for an airplane which is passing over it"), along with aspects of driver assist and autonomous driving.
But Bel Geddes' most amazing design was the Flying Hotel, or The Bel Geddes #4 (shown above). It would sleep 606 passengers in comfort, could be refueled in flight and fly between Chicago and London in 42 hours. It was planned to have tennis courts, showers, dressing rooms, a solarium, doctor's office, barber shop, hairdressers, veranda cafe, 9 decks, 3 kitchens, a dance hall, even a machine and repair shop to change and repair engines in flight. It was the most luxurious airplane ever thought up and a detailed study at the time indicated it was commercially practicable. [Source: Wikipedia and flyawaysimulation.com/news/3322/]

In 1953 the Council for Industrial Design, publishers of "Design", initiated a competition in assocaition with the City of Birmingham to design outdoor seating as part of a campaign to increase interest in the quality of street furniture. This was part of a long debate, that included the CoID, Architectural Review, Ian Nairn and John Betjeman and others, during the 1950s about the appearance of such items as street lights, benches, bins and bus shelters.
In later years the CoID and its successor the Design Council continued to endorse designs, issuing catalogues of 'recommended' designs. This competition judged by such as Herbert Manzoni, Birmingham's long serving City Engineer and architect of the city's post-war reconstruction, along with his long suffering colleague, A G Sheppard Fidler, the actual City Architect. There's also designers and architects including Gordon Cullen, Gordon Russell and Basil Spence who selected a range of benches and seats. The designers and manufacturers include various 'known' names. I wonder what became of the trials and later report?

Front cover of the book where I found some interesting pictures and information about industrial designer Raymond Loewy (Paris, Fr., 1893-Monte Carlo, Monaco, 1986).
At an early age he was already a real world-wide style icon.
Raymond Loewy designed besides cars a huge variety of different types of objects: trains and typewriters, refrigerators and radio sets, cigarette packages and restaurant interiors, sewing machines and long distance passenger busses, etc. etc. And don't forget the famous Coca Cola bottle.

Front cover of the German magazine 'Der Spiegel', #50, Dec. 9, 1952.
Industrial designer Raymond Loewy (Paris, Fr., 1893-Monte Carlo, Monaco, 1986) was here at the age of 59 at the time of the photograph. He had gained a lot of positive publicity because his autobiography 'Never Leave Well Enough Alone' (1951) was accepted so well in Germany. By then he was already a real world-wide style icon.
Raymond Loewy designed besides cars a huge variety of different types of objects: trains and typewriters, refrigerators and radio sets, cigarette packages and restaurant interiors, sewing machines and long distance passenger busses, etc. etc. And don't forget the famous Coca Cola bottle.

I didn't click this one... but it's too representative to be left out.
I graduated as industrial designer!! this was just after my final presentation to my faculties: stress releasing and fun at the sight of the teasing postcards my friends photoshopped me in...
after all, it's good to graduate :-D
A humorous caricature illustration of the well-known South African engineer, industrial designer, and technology entrepreneur; Elon Musk. One of a series of caricatures achieved for the Celebrity Sunday series, where a famous person is rendered within a day. The idea is to show them as if in a passport photo to have consistency.

Ebony and chrome RCA Victor, RCA Model 6K10. Cabinet Designed by John Vassos. (1898 – December 6, 1985) defined the shape for radio, television, broadcasting equipment. American born in Romania to Greek parents.
in his 'moderne' line of furnishings, american industrial designer norman bel geddes allowed the materials of painted and chromed metal to speak for themselves, rather than imitating other materials. this showed his awareness of avant-garde european modern design. however, his incorporation of streamlined supporting elements suggests a more north american interpretation of modern design.
