Bali ist Teil des größten islamischen Staates und trotzdem zu über 90 % hinduistisch. Hinduistische Tempel findet man überall, sogar fast jeder private, traditionell balinesische Haushalt besitzt eine Tempelanlage. Bali heißt in etwa soviel wie: religiöser Ritus. Und dementsprechend verwendet der gläubige Balinese einen großen Teil seiner Zeit und Ressourcen auf religiöse Verrichtungen.
