These individuals were photographed in close proximity in the same space and time, but on different perches. The plumages are a bit different, but according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:

"Great Horned Owls are mottled gray-brown, with reddish brown faces and a neat white patch on the throat. Their overall color tone varies regionally from sooty to pale".

Females are also slightly larger than males, but without a shot of these together, it is impossible to tell which is which.

Harris’s Sparrow has a Conservation Status under the IUCN of Near Threatened www.iucnredlist.org/species/22721082/179974375

The Harris’s Sparrow has the distinction of being the only bird species whose breeding range is found entirely in Canada. It nests in northern latitudes from near Churchill, northern Manitoba, to the shore of the Arctic Ocean near Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. These birds spend the North American winter in southcentral USA. This nonbreeding individual was seen in a residential neighbourhood of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in early October — which would be late autumn for many species, but we’re talking about a creature with Canuck heritage…

Western Tiger Swallowtail

Papilio rutulus Lucas, 1852

These butterflies are very hard to capture. They usually don't stay in one area very long. Today I was lucky to have this individual stay at the same flowering bush for 15 minutes. Then it was gone.

Hazelnut catkins (male flower), produce the pollen that fertilizes the female flowers. This is done by the wind spreading the pollen. Trees have both male and female flowers, but the trees cannot self-pollinate, so the wind has to carry pollen over to another tree. When it gets there, it goes dormant for months while the flower continues to develop, then the pollen wakes up to finally fertilize the tree. Weird huh!

Another image showing the tail is in the first comment section.

Ctenosaura quinquecarinata, commonly known as the club tail iguana or the five-keeled spiny-tailed iguana is a species of lizard in the Iguanidae family endemic to Central America.

The tail on this species is heavily armored with five rings of spines forming longitudinal ridges. Males of the species grow to a length of 35 centimeters (14 in) whereas females attain 18.5 centimeters (7.3 in). Like most Ctenosaura the iguanas are born a bright green color fading to brown as the animal ages. The females tend to turn a uniform drab brown in color, and males develop tones of black, blue and yellow on their bodies and heads over the brown background.

Total population size is not known, but it is estimated that there may be fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. It is threatened by habitat loss through deforestation, overcollection through an unregulated exploitation for the pet trade, and it is even hunted by humans as a food item. – Wikipedia

it can sometimes be difficult to see our individual horizons...

One of my photographic goals has been to take pictures of individual snowflakes. This has been a particularly difficult goal to achieve due to a number of reasons. First, the temperature and weather conditions need to be JUST right to create visible snowflakes, worthy of photographing (this is not often). Second, it doesn't snow every day (even if it has snowed often). And third, most of the times it has snowed, it was during a time that I could not get out with my camera. Either it was night time, during school hours, when I had an appointment, or when I was sick (and I was sick for six weeks straight this year, so this was often). I figured I would just have to wait until next year to get the shots I so desired. But winter wasn't done with us yet, even if it was the first day of spring! (After all, I was born in a blizzard at the end of March!) A friend of mine out in West Jersey posted a picture on Facebook of an individual snowflake which got me ALL EXCITED!!! I saw her picture during the school day and could not WAIT to get home to my camera and these snowflakes that seemed to be so well-formed! I just had to hope the temperature and conditions were the same by me, after school. I finally got home, and was THRILLED to see they were! My sister and I had a great time looking at and photographing these snowflakes! I'm sure we looked ridiculous sitting in the snow on our front lawn with blankets and towels. I was using a macro lens. The lens has a VERY narrow depth of field. So, if the flakes weren't completely flat and parallel with my lens, only part of the flake would be in focus. This was frustrating. And despite using a macro lens, it was still very difficult to get the flakes in focus. These that I am posting were the best of the crop. More pictures to come! I'll post a few each day. I'm not thrilled with the red background, but maybe someday I can figure out how to change the color in Lightroom.

Teufelsmauer (Devil's Wall)

Teufelsmauer (Großvaterfelsen)

The Teufelsmauer (Devil's Wall) is a rock formation made of hard sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous in the northern part of the Harz Foreland in central Germany. This wall of rock runs from Blankenburg (Harz) via Weddersleben and Rieder to Ballenstedt. The most prominent individual rocks of the Teufelsmauer have their own names. The Teufelsmauer near Weddersleben is also called the Adlersklippen ("Eagle Crags").

Many legends and myths have been woven in order to try to explain the unusual rock formation. It was placed under protection as early as 1833 and, in 1852, by the head of the district authority in order to prevent quarrying of the much sought-after sandstone. The Teufelsmauer near Weddersleben has been protected since 1935 as a nature reserve and is thus one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany.

The band of rock that forms the Teufelsmauer outcrops at three places between Ballenstedt in the southeast and Blankenburg (Harz) in the northwest, over a distance of 20 km. It begins with an outcrop known as the Gegensteine northwest of Ballenstedt and is continued in the shape of the Teufelsmauer which runs from south of Weddersleben to Warnstedt. Here, the formations of the Königstein, the Mittelsteine and the Papensteine rear up from a line of rock about 2 km long running from southeast to northwest. Away to the northwest it continues as a ridge between Timmenrode and Blankenburg (Harz) which includes the Hamburger Wappen, the Heidelberg (331.5 m above NN) and the crags of the Großvater and Großmutter (317 m above NN).

The rock formations of the Teufelsmauer are all accessible by footpath. They are among the attractions of the towns of Thale and Blankenburg. In order to conserve protected plant species, it has become necessary to implement measures for visitor management in the Teufelsmauer nature reserve. The rocks may be reached from hiking trails and vantage points are protected by safety railings. Several of the rocks in the Teufelsmauer at Blankenburg may be climbed.

There are checkpoints in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking system at various points along the Teufelsmauer: at Gasthaus Großvater, the inn below the Großvater rocks, (no. 76), by the Hamburger Wappen (no. 74) and on the south side of the ridge at Teufelsmauer Weddersleben (no. 188).

The formations feature in the film "Frantz" by François Ozon.
