But my indignation still knows no bounds.

Since 2011, Brazil has been undergoing profound transformations. These transformations have caused the country to go back a lot and only with the current government (of President Lula) are we reconquering many things. I'm not talking about perfections, but about a country that wants to show what it has come to. The current opposition has brought many difficulties, opening doors to treason to the homeland and, last week (between September 15 and 17), approved laws that shield parliamentarians from the crimes they have committed and amnesty those who plotted against democracy. And this Sunday, the population together with representatives of the left took to the streets of the main capitals to say enough is enough. It was a spontaneous indignation that brought thousands of people to the streets. The photos and videos capture moments of what happened in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro on 09/21/2025. Examining Issues in the Ongoing Debates in the JNU Student Movement .

At this juncture in the JNU student movement, it is time to pause for a moment and assess the paradigm ofthe ongoing crisis. It is time to recall the values and ethos ofthe student movement which has been built in the course ofstruggles. The PRO ofthe university, in the name of'public relations', informs the public that students who insist on demanding minimum wages for workers on campus are a disruptive' influence, deterring contractors from taking up construction prujects in JNU. The students are seen by the authorities to be a blot on JNU's 'image'. But isn't the fact that the JNU Administration has for years and years been denying (and continues to deny) minimum wages to workers on campus a blot on JNU's socially sensitive image? .

Assessine 19 February : Bevond Binaries Today, a frenzy offear is being whipped up whereby some features ofthe February 19 protest are being presented as the greatest threat to JNU's democratic culture. Is this true? On the other hand, is it true that those same features represent all that is highest and best about JNU's culture of protest? It is time we tried to place the events of February 19 in perspective, beyond these binaries. The JNU student community would agree that some ofthe features ofthe February 19 protest were neither advisable nor a rnatter ofcelebration. Whatever our differences, it is undeniable that above all those particular expressions ofprotest gave the JNU Administration an excuse with which to hit back at the student movement. They are not a routine feature of the JNU student movement. Which is why it was fitting that the JNUSU, on behalf ofthe student community, has put the record straight and expressed regret for the above, and, contrary to false propaganda, aiJ the nine suspended students have communicated their faith in this resolution ofregret to the Administration. Regrettable though those events were, it is NOT TRUE that those features ofthe protest represent an impending apocalypse of anarchy, the worst threat to 'academic' order and peace, some sort of ' world turned upside down' in JNU where 'ultras' will be able to'insult authority' and 'destabilise academics'. .

Administration's Biases : Punishing Protests, Shielding Lumpenism In JNU, we all recalJ several instances where a section ofstudents have indulged in violence, with communal and anti-dt!mocratic intent -branding a person ofa particular religion to be 'terrorist' and prevent him from speaking, or to assault students who oppose a particular right-wing ideology. Or we've seen cases ofwanton lumpen attacks by certain elements against ordinary students or even a Hostel Warden who challenge them. In none of these cases has the Administration ever summarily suspended a sh&gle student. In fact, in the vast majority of these cases, no Enquiry has seriously been pursued, and no punishment meted out to the perpetrators. In contrast to such events, it is crystal clear that on February 19, what was uppermost on the mind ofthe protesting students was not some perverse wish to humiliate an individual or a figure ofauthority. What was uppermost for the students was their indignation at the plight of retrenched workers and daily wage workers deprived of legal minimum wage on JNUcampus. This indignation atAdministration's callousness regarding their legal duty towards these workers which created the impasse with the Registrar. Some of the expressions of this indignation were undesirable and have unnecessarily drawn attention away from the real issue. Recognising this, the JNUSU leadership has expressed regret, while upholding the core issue of workers' rights. .

leadership has claimed that Praful Patel has assured that other airports will not be privatised; but the Ministry itself has said that no such assurance has been made. The double role was played out during the strike itself, when West Bengal CM Buddhadev Bhattacharya apologised to FICCI representatives for the airport strike that had inconvenienced their trip to Kolkata. West Bengals CPI(M) State Secretary Anil Biswas explained that the strike was necessary and right; but so was Buddhadevs position. After all, he said, how can a CM support a strike? So the division of labour is clear: the Unions will lead the workers in the strike, while the Chief Minister of a Left ruled State must uphold the status quo and discipline the workers! Of course, the Union leadership will be used to effectively discipline the workers! Recall that Buddhadev, in an interview in

., had declared: We have the strongest Unions

.. On the Iran issue, too, the CPI-CPI(M) spewed fire and brimstone warning the UPA not to vote with the US resolution, and demanding the recall of David Mulford. But a few days before the vote, they toned down their protest, and now, after the blatant and shameful vote on February 2, they have satisfied themselves with expressing indignation! Friends, a month from now, George Bush will visit India. We hope to see the Indian people, led by the Left, resisting his entry on Indian soil. But we also remind that demonstrating against Bush is only one aspect of the struggle against imperialism. If the Left fails to put up an effective resistance to Bushs Indian agents, to Manmohan Singh and the UPA Government, when they force the pro-imperialist policies of liberalisation onto Indian people, and when they they surrender Indias self-respect and freedom to US diktats, it will immeasurably weaken the struggle against imperialism. .
