Inner workings of an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator) display instrument (SMITH INDUSTRIES, Cheltenham)
A dial test indicator consists of a gauge; on the gauge is a pin level mounted on a spring. When the pin contacts a surface, pressure forces the pin lever up, causing the dial gauge to move. Numbers marked on the perimeter of the dial test indicator display the amount of pressure applied to the pin lever.
This is a spot we visit and photograph often as it's different every time. In very cold winter weather, it's particularly pretty with all the ice. Interesting too how the minerals in the rock affect the color of the water as it seeps through the cracks and subsequently freezes underneath it.
The ice resulting from seepage through the overhanging rock is a pretty good indicator there is a chance of mortal danger in standing underneath it. The cold temperatures and heavy ice can force open the cracks and have a big slab of rock come down on top of you. It's happened before - though thankfully, not when anyone was nearby. Must have been a heck of a crash!
Just a log on a beach by the path through dunes to the carpark. Across the water and beyond the sandspit is Warrington.
Today a pole established our region of Otago as one of the most friendly places on Earth from visitor ratings. Perth in Scotland was number 1 and Taiwan, Brazil, USA and others also featured.
So I'm hoping for more comments than I can poke a stick at :)
Sure it's just a fixed approach signal, but still it was neat to find this cool sentinel along the former Frisco in Columbus. Golden Triangle Railroad is running over the BNSF here for a few miles to interchange on the north side of town, and the approach indicator is for the diamond crossing with the KCS Tuscaloosa Subdivision near downtown.
