That said, not sure how committed I am to this but thought I'd give it a run-out anyway.

Pilibhit Junction, Uttar Pradesh

16th October 2015

The church on the banks of the backwaters is a silently blessing Ernakulam bound passenger train rolling over the bridge

In the days when metre-gauge trains ruled at Pilibhit Junction, Uttar Pradesh, this shot captures a somewhat battered and careworn NER YDM-4, unit 6507, arriving at the end of its journey with the 11.15am from Shahjahanpur (train 52232).

Framed to include the East signal box and the sea of rods between the tracks. I remember it for being a very warm day, as well as the subsequent shots we were allowed to take from the flat roof of the box, which we accessed by climbing out of one of the viewing windows!

Sadly, it's a scene that has changed extensively in the last few years as broad gauge conversion has relentlessly advanced into the area.

Out of interest, if you look at the carriage stock on the right, you can see just how much the bodywork overlaps the bogies.

A train negotiates a viaduct amidst the thick forest of Southern Odisha,India.

Passing a set of dwellings on the approach to Shahjahanpur station is the 10.15am from Pilibhit (train 52233) headed by NER liveried Alco YDM4 unit 6477. This is the end of the track for metre-gauge trains in these parts, and the loco will run around and head back to Pilibhit around 40 minutes later.

Just behind the white buildings on the left is the electrified broad-gauge line from Bareilly to Sitapur so there's a good chance the dwellings, on what is effectively an island between the BG and MG tracks, are used by railway workers. It's no surprise there's livestock in shot - most residents with a bit of land at their disposal will own a cow or two to provide the family with milk, and fuel for the fire (dung is collected, moulded into cakes, and left to dry in the sun).

If the fast-disappearing metre gauge system is your cup of tea then I can't recommend enough a video produced by Vishnu Nath and Ami Verna at the link below. It's superb!

Itwari Junction to Nagbhir Junction is one of the few narrow gauge lines reamainig in Indian Railways. Total of 106 kms through the rural India. Having travelled in trains in broad gauge section which touches 110 - 120 Kmph, travelling in a train which has a maximum speed of 40 Kmph was a different experience . Total journey time was four and half hours. Started at 6.00 AM from Itwari Jn and reached Nagbhir Jn bang on time by 10.30 AM. Interestingly, there was a breakfast halt at Kuhi station too. Hope to do the same stretch again sometime in summer before narrow gauges vanishes into history. In picture, Nagbhir Jn - Itwari Jn passenger arriving at Umred

The Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. Its ranked as one of the most dangerous railway tracks on earth.Indian Railways have been known for achieving engineering feats. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. It is the second longest sea bridge in India after the 2.3-km Bandra-Worli sea link on Mumbai's western coast. It is an engineering marvel that evokes awe.Few can forget a train journey on the Pamban bridge,With 143 piers, spanning 2 km between the Rameswaram island to the mainland.
