HALTING THE BACKSLIDE ON LGBTQ+ RIGHTS: HOW WE CAN MOBILIZE SUPPORT AMID INCREASED POLICY ROLLBACKS, HATE SPEECH, AND VIOLENCE
The LGBTQ+ community has seen remarkable progress and widespread social acceptance in many countries over the past few decades. In recent years, despite greater social acceptance, the community has faced severe rollbacks of their rights and punishing laws worldwide; a lack of adequate philanthropic support and funding; and hatred ranging from political weaponization and social targeting to hate speech and violence. LGBTQ+ people around the world experience some of the worst discrimination and most significant challenges in simply living their own lives. In the face of these distressing developments, the fight for civil rights worldwide must gain increased momentum, zeal, and demonstrated support from a diverse range of allies to the LGBTQ+ community. This session will highlight the role that each of us can play in defending and advancing the equal human, economic, and social rights of LGBTQ+ people globally.

One of the most useful bitter herbs, centaury strengthens digestive function, especially within the stomach. By increasing stomach secretions it hastens the breakdown of food, it also stimulates the appetite and increases bile production. The plant needs to be take over a number of weeks and an infusion should be slowly sipped so that the components (their bitterness can be detected at a dilution of 1:3,500) can stimulate reflex activity throughout the upper digestive tract. The whole herb is appetizer, aromatic, bitter, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, emetic, weakly febrifuge, hepatic, stomachic and tonic. It acts on the liver and kidneys, purifies the blood and is an excellent tonic for the digestive system. Externally, the fresh green herb is said to be a good application to wounds and sores. It is often used in combination with other herbs such as chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and marshmallow (Althaea officinalis). The whole plant is harvested when in flower and can be dried for later use. The plant is used in Bach flower remedies - the keywords for prescribing it are 'Weak willed', 'Too easily influenced' and 'Willing servitors'. A homeopathic remedy is made from the plant. It is used in the treatment of liver and gall bladder ailments. The German Commission E Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Centaurium erythraea for dyspeptic complaints, loss of appetite.

Diversification of household income sources though small livestock activities
An important part of the ‘Making a Living from Livestock’ project involves strengthening of livestock commodity associations such as LCDs and ISALS. Bambelelani Goat group has been a beneficiary of the project in this aspect. Established in 2014, the 17-member goat group has grown from humble beginnings to operating a successful enterprise through their lending and savings. Through the project they have been assisted with trainings in goat husbandry, veterinary services for their goats, as well as financial management skills that have proved crucial in helping them to sustain their successful business for the past 3 years.

The ultimate “threat multiplier,” climate change is increasing the challenges facing the U.S. development, diplomatic, and security communities. “A New Climate for Peace: Taking Action on Climate and Fragility Risks,” an independent report commissioned by the members of the G7, identifies seven compound climate-fragility risks that pose serious threats to stability in the decades ahead. Based on a thorough assessment of existing policies, the report recommends that the G7 take concrete actions to tackle climate-fragility risks and increase the resilience of states and societies.
Join leaders from the development, diplomatic, and security communities and the report’s coauthors for the U.S. launch of a “New Climate for Peace.” The high-level interagency panel will explore how these climate-fragility challenges are changing the way the United States and its partners work, and will also identify opportunities for joint action to address them.

Value(s) for Money? Philanthropy as a Catalyst for Social Change (March 6-9, 2014)
Increasing social and environmental challenges, writ globally, are raising the stakes for philanthropy to find "solutions". The deeply complex nature of these challenges, however, defies easy fixes and requires more sophisticated and diffuse systems level approaches. Is the philanthropic sector ready, or capable of meeting critical systemic challenges? Probably not, as seen through the lens of Michael Edwards in a recent think piece entitled 'Beauty and the Beast: Can Money Ever Foster Social Transformation?'.
Innovative funding mechanisms that support social change - like crowd-funding, social impact bonds, payments for eco-system services and prize-backed challenges - have diversified the funding landscape and brought in new resources. The system, however, is arguably out of balance with too much focus placed on revenue-generation, and directing financial resources, through the market. At the same time, less funding is available for the deeper, less tangible drivers of social change - change that is driven by the beneficiaries themselves and is inherently more democratic. Money, while a seemingly essential tool in change processes, can be a "curse", reinforcing or exacerbating the very circumstances and power imbalances at the heart of systemic social challenges.
The objective of this program, in partnership with Hivos, is to shape a new narrative on funding for deep social change that can influence current and future funding trends and global policies.

Frank founded Sarcoidosis of Long Island, a not-for-profit organization committed to increasing awareness of this rare disease that leads to debilitating, and potentially deadly inflammation, particularly within internal organs. The Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP) held the conference, “Increasing Productivity and Unleashing Growth” at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad on May 26-27th, 2012. This conference also marked the final round of the Competitive Grants Program that was launched by PSSP in January 2012 for Pakistani PhD and graduate students studying locally and abroad on economic development issues of Pakistan. The finalists presented in front of the Research Advisory Committee, donor heads, professors and students from local universities. The event also consisted of plenary sessions on Pakistan’s various economic growth issues by renowned academics from all over the world, such as Dr. Jock Anderson, Dr. Regina Birner and Dr. David Spielman.
