The inside story of how the Republicans abandoned the poor and the middle class to pursue their relentless agenda of tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent

By Tim Dickinson (Rolling Stone Magazine)

The nation is still recovering from a crushing recession that sent unemployment hovering above nine percent for two straight years. The president, mindful of soaring deficits, is pushing bold action to shore up the nation's balance sheet. Cloaking himself in the language of class warfare, he calls on a hostile Congress to end wasteful tax breaks for the rich. "We're going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share," he thunders to a crowd in Georgia. Such tax loopholes, he adds, "sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary – and that's crazy."

Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. "Do you think the millionaire ought to pay more in taxes than the bus driver," he demands, "or less?"

The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: "MORE!"

The year was 1985. The president was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Today's Republican Party may revere Reagan as the patron saint of low taxation. But the party of Reagan – which understood that higher taxes on the rich are sometimes required to cure ruinous deficits – is dead and gone. Instead, the modern GOP has undergone a radical transformation, reorganizing itself around a grotesque proposition: that the wealthy should grow wealthier still, whatever the consequences for the rest of us.

Modern-day Republicans have become, quite simply, the Party of the One Percent – the Party of the Rich.

Income tax in Scotland should protect low earners, be progressive, proportionate to the ability to the pay and support the economy, the First Minister has said.

My tiny little effort at being ironic. I doubt that they'll get it. You need to have read about Thoreau's night in jail for refusing to pay some form of taxation he had been assessed. His refusal was a protest against the Mexican American war.

The numerator is the sum of all amounts underreported minus the sum of all amounts overreported on an item, such as income allocated from partnerships and S corporations. The denominator is the sum of the absolute values of the amounts that should have been reported on that item. Absolute values are used for the denominator to prevent negative income amounts from canceling out positive income amounts.

The folks at Liberty Tax Service station some dude to stand out at the curb and lazily wave at the passing motorists and hope that will convince you to use their tax service. This guy was in Smyrna. There was a guy in Antioch that took this job seriously and would dance around and crawl on top of his car. I never had my camera when I saw that guy.

It is time, once again, for me and my fellow Americans to carve off a piece of our yearly earnings for the government. I hope the cut was not too deep this year, my Flickr friends. I'm glad it's over. The check is in the mail, dear Uncle. Until next year...

The annual income tax time. Got yours filed yet?

I would NOT want to be audited!!!

I guess the IRS really does check the tax forms that are sent to them because I was informed that I had made an error & the IRS would be returning some of the $$$ that I had mailed in for taxes owed.

Wow, ever hear of that???

Today is Income Tax filing day - April 15. In my "former life" I couldn't wait for this day to be over. I still do a few taxes, so I look forward to the end of the rush.

Feb. 3rd is the anniversary of the day the music died, on two counts.

On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, United States killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson.

The Sixteenth Amendment (Amendment XVI) to the United States Constitution was ratified on February 3, 1913 enabling income tax:

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

This man was generous enough to let me photograph him for about 5 minutes as he worked the street encouraging last minute filers. For me, it was another step towards approaching random strangers for an impromptu photo session.

Worked on this shot quite a bit in order to: bring out details, darken and cool the color pallete, and clone out an annoying telephone poll.
