A bit of Fence Friday humor, spotted in Hell, Michigan, on my visit there last month

Dendelions suffer from our dismissal and inattention of the ordinary, yet are hardly ordinary close in. Were they 2 feet tall with six inch blossoms there would be scores of cultivars and they would populate gardens. They are asters, important to early spring pollinators, and said to be nutritious, vitamin rich, perhaps even medicinal. We humans eradicate them with toxic enthusiasm from lawn and golf course, as though there is no cost for such activities, though, likely, there is. This one is off the beaten path, free to catch the sun and fulfill its role in nature unmolested.

So much fun watching their courtship behavior. Extremely difficult to be at the right place and right time. One moment of inattention and you miss the action! Not perfectly sharp but good enough for now.....

Monastero dell'Eremita.

Monastery of the Hermit. The cloister.

This monastery, dating back to around 1200, had fallen completely into disrepair. A friar settled there years ago and with the help of volunteers and brothers he brought it back to life. It is located in Umbria within a chain of hills. Unfortunately for my inattention, I did not take note of the exact position which I cannot provide.

A little moment of inattention and here we are finished in pieces for his greatest pleasure :p

Ollie loves any and all games that involve strings or string-like stuff.

A plain string will do, but it's even more fun if there's something to chase, pounce on, grab and maybe even bite or chew at the other end.

Store-bought rabbit-fur mice and bunches of feathers are nice enough, but they don't come close to appealing to Ollie the way a simple earbud does. He'll play tetherball with it, deftly capture it with just one paw, then get down the business of chewing lightly on that tempting plastic.

When we play together, I make sure Ollie's control of the earbud is only momentary.

This morning, though, in a rare fit of inattention, I left the earbuds on the bed. I returned to find Ollie on his side, wire in his paw and a gleam in his dilated pupils while he gazed upon the prize, the earbud.

As soon as Ollie saw me, he straightened up and looked off into the distance as if nothing out of the ordinary were happening. Foolishly, he forgot to cover the earbud with his velvety paw.

While reaching the summit point to my day hike there is this plaque dedicated to a young boy who died on this spot fifty nine years ago falling to his death at Deep Rock Summit. I looked at this feeling a sense of profound melancholy for a young boy who was almost the same age as me who lost his life in a moment of carelessness. I could imagine him not falling and meeting him, talking about growing up in the sixties and reflecting on the changes of almost being seventy years on this Earth. But one careless mistake of inattention by his parents or whoever was watching him ended all that and he was denied it all.

The tide coming in over the rocks at Treyarnon and filling the natural swimming pool (lower left) .

Watching the gentle surf flow over the rocks , eventually to cascade into the pool is a very soothing passtime. At first the waves are kept back by the rock , but then the first one breaches the defenses , then after a lull , another wave succeeds. Your eyes are dragged to the breach , and after a few minutes watching you realize that during your inattention the pools defenses have been breached elsewhere. The Pool is no longer a still mirror reflecting the blue sky and clouds. Alas all is turmoil , and your photos have a different character altogether.

My feet are cold, but not as cold as his.

All I wanted was a life of inattention,

to eat my bowl of cereals and not think

of him, pale and thin and unable to swallow,

falling from this life like leaves:

volitionless, from different heights, to one direction.

At first there was a 'two's company scenario': two mating ladybirds hanging perilously vertically on the narrow edge of a picnic table. The sight of a small boy trying to cup them in his hands drew my attention to them.

I suggested I would take their photo and perhaps we should leave them alone. This apparently satisfied him, and also his even smaller brother who had come to see what was going on.

Some time afterwards, we passed by this same picnic table during our visit to the buddleias in the walled garden. I saw a third ladybird alight on the table and scurry along the top edge. I must have then had a moment's inattention because I suddenly realised it had joined the first two, making this threesome.

Not easy to tell, from this jumble of red with black spots, but these look rather like 5-spot ladybirds aka coccinella qinquepunctata, although Google tells me they are rare.

I showed my shot to my good friend, Gilly, who tells me she discovered that "ladybirds' mating lasts 2 hours during which time they are very vulnerable to passing hungry birds (plus innocent small boys and mad ladies with cameras)** and if you see some you should cover them up to prevent aerial attacks."

It's taken ages to render this photo suitable to post - thus for:

This is one of my favorite places, Steamboat Lake in Colorado. This (I think) is Hahn's Peak, facing east from the lake. It was cold, the wind was blowing, and I was hurrying and didn't notice the stick of a tree right in the middle of the frame. Still, I like the overall tonality and sharpness, and the snowcapped peak is pretty cool too.

I waited patiently in the blowing wind and sand -noticing blowing caterpillars and bumble bees being swept by me. In a moment inattention when photographing the bee the plover disappeared off the nest and soon after this one appeared to take over. Taken about 10 minutes before the previous post

Piping Plovers are nearly invisible until they run a short distance, stop, and tilt forward to pull an insect or worm from the soft sand. They tend to forage alone or in small groups sticking to the higher parts of the shoreline relative to other shorebirds.

Through a combination of carelessness and inattention I suddenly found myself confronting a large flock of advancing American Avocets, praying they wouldn't stampede. Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, Galveston County, Texas.

This set of railroad tracks is part of a railroad terminal where trains are broken apart to separate cars going to different destinations. Many of the locomotives in the terminal are remote controlled - sort of like a very expensive toy train setup. Cars are kicked down different tracks to assemble new loads for outbound trains. It is a dangerous place where one moment of inattention can get you into a serious accident.

This shot was taken in the golden hour shortly before sunset. The low vantage point emphasizes the irregularities in the tracks. The tracks make nice leading lines all the way through.

Talatamaty (Madagascar) - Un moment d’inattention…

Inappropriate reflection

Talatamaty (Madagascar) - A moment of inattention… And we miss a photo! As much as possible, I try to control what happens in its frame. It's not always easy and the reality of the field (unlike studio photography) makes it rare to master everything. Often, an imponderable invites itself. It can lead the photo directly to the trash or the unexpected can sublimate it; like a bird that enters the frame and is ideally placed in the composition at the moment of the shutter release.

For this photo, it's the other way around. If I hadn't wanted to catch the young shopkeeper's gaze on the fly, I would have been able to see that my reflection appeared in the window on the left. damn! If I was in bad faith, I could headline: "Self-portait". But for me it's a failed photo. The image I had imagined is not the one you are looking at. And you can't say that my reflection sublimates hit

I was given a cactus bu my Grandmother over 40 years ago. It continues to thrive under my unique approach of complete inattention to its care.

Spiky for Macro Mondays

It's small; that's a wine-glass it's trapped under. Pandora brought it in from the garden this morning, and we rescued it, even if I did manage to trap its tail under the glass.

And it led to a disaster for all of us.

Having captured it (and photographed it) I opened the sliding door into the garden so that I could release it. As I walked out, Catherine saw that Maya's cockatiel, Oscar, was perched on my shoulder.

It was too late; before I could turn back inside, he flew off.

He spent so much time sat on my shoulder that I tended to forgot he was there. Indeed I don't even remember registering him there at all this morning; I must have rescued the lizard and photographed it with him sat on my shoulder the whole time, probably.

And a moment's inattention and carelessness on my part has led to a day of upset and tears, and Maya losing her friend.

We've spent the whole day with at least one of us in the garden calling to him. We've seen him flying around, or perched in surrounding trees. But he won't come down. We have his cage out in the garden with the top perch on it, on the hope that if he gets hungry he'd come back to it. But each time he flies he seems to go further away.

We've put up notices in the local area. We've put flyers in as many local letterboxes as we can manage. We've put an advert in the local paper. Aside from a notice in teh local vet's I think we've done all we can.

It's getting dark now. He's still out there somewhere. Perhaps he's happy, flying free, and has found plenty to eat. Or perhaps he's tired, hungry, lonely and scared and can't work out how to get home. The worst part of it is that we don't know and will probably never know. We've already discussed with Maya the idea that she should work on the principle that he's gone, and that we'll only get him back if we're very lucky.

I feel wretched. It was my fault this happened and the fact that Maya has been philosophical and forgiving about it somehow makes it worse. We all loved that bird, despite the short time we had him, and we're really going to feel the loss.

It's not been a good day.

Update: A few days later we got him back. An old couple further down the hill found him trying to get into their cockatiel aviary in the garden. Their daughter saw one of our adverts and told them about it. We were very, very lucky.

At last I'm back to the workshop after a break following an incident involving woodturning, inattention, blood, stitches and bandages.

This is the result; a jewellery box in sycamore and something I scrounged that's mahogany-like. Corners simply mitred and strengthened with slip-feathers.

This man was so engrossed in his phone that he paid no attention to the bin he was transporting on a dolly as it fell off, instead he stood behind his truck, totally oblivious. He opened his truck, reached for the bin and realized it was no longer there. My friend and I chuckled to see how long it took him to become aware.

Spanish civil war refuge in Valencia's ciutat vella neigborhood, today used as headquarters of a Falla association.

Take a look to the size of the advertising in a building which I guess must have maximum protection in terms of heritage. Is also unfortunate the chosen place for traffic signs. An inattention and neglect that says a lot about the taboos that still exist in Spain in the treatment of items related to the civil war (ended in 1939!).

Twisted, gnarled, and stripped free of the needles and twigs that once sustained it in life, the wreckage of a Pinyon Pine (Pinus edulis) clings to the edge of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, Colorado. The dead arms of the tree sweep toward the pegmatite impregnated gneiss of the Painted Wall in the distance. The Wall is the tallest cliff in Colorado at 2,250 ft (685 m) from river to rim.

The perspective here is from the North Rim of the canyon, and it is apparent that the cliffs on this side are significantly more vertical and less weathered than those on the South Rim. Apparently the north-facing cliffs hold more winter snow, and thus have eroded more quickly. Getting too close to the edge of these cliffs gives me a certain prickle to the neck and a surge of fear through the bowels (at least while un-roped). My crazed wife ducked under a barrier and walked right up to the edge, and I can't say I enjoyed watching her at all. It is almost as if mortality reaches up from below, to deliver a yawning reminder that life is fleeting, and can be made more-so in an instant of inattention or mishap.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Labor/Labour Day long-weekend! I am now very slightly wiser now that I know that Canadians celebrate Labour Day too ;-) It would be great of the U.S. Congress could do something patriotic and celebrate by raising the minimum wage for laborers to $15/hour. But no. Just lip-service from the fat-cats at the top who pull the levers.

23 January 2021: Belgium’s federal and regional governments has met yesterday to discuss the measures that are in force to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. The most important decisions taken at the meeting were a ban on non-essential travel outside Belgium that will come into force from Wednesday 27 January and will last until 1 March and the promise that barbers, hairdressers’ and beauty salons will be allowed to reopen from Saturday 13 February providing that the coronavirus improve between now and then. Meanwhile, with 1,963 cases on average a day in the week to 19 January (the figure is down 4% on the week) we remain at a high plateau. Furthermore, the fall in the number of new infections is currently only apparent in Wallonia and Brussels. In Flanders an increase of the numbers has been reported. Also, it was noted that the fall is greatest among over 80s and that we’re seeing a double digit increase among children under 10. Net-net, the situation remains very fragile and the slightest inattention can ignite a new wave. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The virus is currently playing a home game, but our best players, the spring and the vaccine, still need to come onto the field. In the end fortune will turn in our favour. Today, I’m posting some graffiti that I came across during yesterday’s corona walk – Ghent, Belgium.

MacroMonday theme this week is 'Flame' and I completely failed to create what I had in my head (I had in mind a pile of handwritten love letters tied with a ribbon, being consigned to a flame. Part of any visit to the Tiptree Tearoom, the Lock at Heybridge Basin, is getting up close and personal with the sparrows and the starlings. This one was relatively polite sitting on the fence, but most of them end up on the table and even on your plate is you have a moment of inattention!

The Siberian husky is a medium sized working sled dog breed originating in the Chukchi Peninsula in eastern Siberia where they are bred by the Chukchi people for sled pulling, and companionship. It is an active, energetic, resilient breed, whose ancestors lived in the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Siberian Arctic.

A Siberian husky has a double coat that is thicker than that of most other dog breeds. It has two layers, a dense, finely wavy undercoat and a longer topcoat of thicker, straight guard hairs. It protects the dogs effectively against harsh Arctic winters, and also reflects heat in the summer. It is able to withstand temperatures as low as −50 to −60 °C (−58 to −76 °F). The undercoat is often absent during shedding. Their thick coats require weekly grooming. Siberian husky tails are heavily furred and they will often curl up with their tails over their faces and noses in order to provide additional warmth, this is often referred to as the 'Siberian Swirl'.

Siberian huskies come in a variety of colours and patterns, usually with white paws and legs, facial markings, and tail tip. The most common coats are black and white, then less common copper-red and white, grey and white and pure white.

The breed standard indicates that males are ideally between 20 to 24 in. (51 to 61 cm) tall at the withers and weighing between 45 to 60 lbs. (20 and 27 kg). Females are smaller, growing to between 19 to 23 in. (48 to 58 cm) tall at the withers and weighing between 35 to 50 lbs. (16 to 23 kg).

The character of the Siberian husky is friendly and gentle, the dog is intelligent, but can be stubborn because of its independence, impulsivity and inattention. Their life span is between 12 to 14 years.

Another redo of a relatively recent model - the Ferrari LaFerrari.

One problem with designing a model to be ready a few days after the launch of the real car - is an inattention to the details. The Ferrari LaFerrari is a pretty tricky set of surfaces too. The car is fill of 3D-diamond forms that are very difficult to replicate in Lego, particularly at this scale, whilst still being able to package the mechanicals, and having opening panels.

Anyway....

This update refines many of the details:

The front surface, doors, side panels, engine cover, windscreen and rear bumper.

Really, on the core is left intact, though there are minor structural improvements there as well.

On thing that doesn't change is the silly name. Hopefully next time, Ferrari chooses a more suitable name for its top-line supercar.

I was fortunate to be in the Gila National Forest during this year’s Perseid meteor shower at its peak the night of 12-13 August 2023.

This image is a composite made with my Nikon D850 DSLR and a 40mm Sigma Art lens shot at f/1.4. This is an accumulation of about 4 hours of exposures with some gaps due to inattention and visiting with friends. The bright foreground and landscape is not realistic since everything was black looking at the scene with the naked eye. I made a 6 minute exposure for the landscape with the tracker off - so guessing the light we see in the image was from the Milky Way. SQM readings were 21.7-21.8.

Note the smoke trail between the double cluster in Perseus and Andromeda. The meteor just above it did not produce the trail. Unfortunately I missed the one that did. I was able to see the smoke disperse for over 10 minutes subsequent frames. One of the best Perseid shows in the recent past.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs when the earth passes through the debris field left by comet Swift-Tuttle. The most intense part of the shower occurs around August 12 each year. The meteors appear all over the sky, but appear to come from a common point called the radiant in the constellation Perseus.

Jan Havickszoon Steen (Leiden, 1626 - Leiden, February 3, 1679) - Occasional company - (1661-63) oil on oak panel 27,4 x 22,2 cm - Gemäldegalerie, Berlin

Allo stesso tempo, lei cerca i suoi soldi.

There is much to be done in the small-format genre image. With a complicit gaze, the old woman looks at the viewer, whom she thus turns into an accomplice. In fact, the other participants in this "loose society," a scene from a brothel, cannot see that a theft is taking place. It is probably a matchmaker who leads the arrogant older man to a young woman with a slightly open bodice. At the same time, she is looking for his money. As an embrace is being prepared, a young servant lifts the old man's hat. Not only the wine glass in the raised right hand, also the reddened nose and the pewter jug indicate a possible cause of the man's obvious inattention. Such burlesque scenes occupy a central place in Jan Steen's work.

...yes it's that time again...the fields are ripe for harvest and I am going to work....something like that.

Please forgive my inattention to YOUR wonderful work while I'm gone...

I would say 'ciao'...but that's such an elitist cliché, so 'bye'...see you in September.....errr....November.

In the late 1880s,the American expatriate John Singer Seargent experimented with portrait compositions whose informality and naturalness stood in sharp contrast to his studio portraits of elegant society types.Inspired in part by the Impressionist works of his friend,Claude Monet, this portrait depicts another French artist friend Paul Helleu, and his young wife,Alice,at Fladbury,in England's Cotswolds.Liberated from pictorial conventions,Sargent here featured the compositional asymmetry, natural light, and casual inattention of his "sitters."

A personally satisfying capture as I have operated both 611(the Roanoke Masterpiece) and 126(Sadie: the survivor) in the background, in 'at the Throttle Experiences'. The original Norfolk Southern AS-416 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1955. The AS-416 is one of several that were ordered by the original Norfolk Southern Railway. The 1616 has electrical components supplied by General Electric. The original NS ran from Charlotte, NC through Raleigh to Norfolk, VA. I am a member of the original NS Historical Society as the railroad ran beside my high school in charlotte(my inattention to the in season sport practice sat poorly with my coaches) and the line runs about 2.5 miles from my house today.
