The famous carving of the Lincoln Imp (top) inside Lincoln Cathedral.

Lincoln Cathedral has commanded the wolds of Lincolnshire from high on castle Hill for hundreds of years.

Started by the Normans following their conquest of Britain in 1066 – with the first stage of work completed by 1092 – the cathedral can be seen from miles around.

Its west front still features three great arches from the 11th century, with the huge Romanesque doorways representing the entrance to heaven, though much of the original structure was destroyed by an earthquake in 1185.

After this date, Hugh of Avalon started the rebuilding and by the start of the 14th century, the dominant structure of the central tower had been raised, originally with a wooden spire on top, to make Lincoln Cathedral the world’s tallest building until1548, when the spire collapsed. The two western towers were completed during this time as well.

The interior is mostly in the Early English style of architecture, with the majority of the exterior in the Gothic style.

The cathedral’s chapter house hosted gatherings under both Edwards I and Edward II, precursors of the English Parliament.

Today, the cathedral is still a functioning church and also a popular tourist attraction, with restoration work constantly going on to keep it in shape.
