Nuremberg Castle is the landmark of the city of Nuremberg. It is a double castle and consists of the Kaiserburg and the Burggrafenburg.
The earliest traces of construction date back to the time around 1000. After the severe damage caused by the air raids on Nuremberg in World War II, the castle complex was rebuilt in historical forms. In its historical character as a fortified building and imperial residence, imperial castle and Hohenzollern burgrave's seat, it is one of the most important fortifications in Europe in terms of history and architecture.[1] It is one of the most important art and architectural monuments in the city.
An imperial castle or Reichsburg was a castle built by order of the Holy Roman Emperor, whose management was entrusted to Reichsministeriales or Burgmannen. It is not possible to identify a clear distinction between imperial castles and the fortified imperial palaces or Pfalzen, because many imperial castles were used by German kings for temporary stays. Many imperial castles were built in regions such as Swabia, Franconia, the Palatinate and the Alsace, where there were a high density of imperial estates (Reichsgüter) during the Hohenstaufen era. After the capitulation of the Shōgunate and the Meiji Restoration the inhabitants including the Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu, were required to vacate the premises of the Edo Castle.
Leaving the Kyōto Imperial Palace in 1868, the Emperor arrived at the Edo Castle, fixing it as his new residence and renamed it Tōkei Castle. At that time Tōkyō had also been called Tōkei.
The Emperor left for Kyōto again, and after coming back in 1869, he renamed it "Imperial Castle" (Kōjō)

The Sinwell Tower built in the 2nd half of the 13th century was the major keep of the Castle. It is named after its cylindrical form: in Middle High German sinwell means perfectly round. In the 1560s, its height was increased by a further floor and a pavilion roof with a pointed helm.

Cochem, Reichsburg (Imperial Castle)
The imperial castle of Cochem is enthroned majestically on the 154-meter-high Burgberg in the middle of the city. It was built around 1000, destroyed in 1689 and rebuilt in 1874-1877.
The present appearance of the castle is strongly influenced by the buildings rebuilt in the 19th century, which often include or build on medieval buildings. Romanesque or Gothic elements can be found in the ring wall, the north gate, the octagonal tower, the witches 'tower and the building in which the knights' hall is located.
From mid-March to November, 40-minute guided tours take place daily at short, regular intervals between 09:00 and 17:00.
