The cathedral of Morelia (a diocese in its own right) was built between 1600 and 1744, replacing a temporary cathedral that used to be here. The cathedral is really the easiest landmark in all of Morelia, especially at night, when the facade and towers are lit up. Also, I'm told that on Saturdays, there are fireworks for about twenty minutes (a sight I have yet to behold)

The same alleyway, but in sephia. The alley is just so darn rustic looking in real life that sephia is only appropriate. Plus, its an excuse to use that particular function of the camera....

This type of seat is very typical of monastaries, convents and seminaries. Back in the day (that, by the way, is NOT referring to the 1990's - more like the 1590's and forward) folks simply didn't have the money for candles to read by all night or the technology for electric lamps.

So during the night - when the moon was out - they would sit by the window and read by the light of the moon. Practical and quite a view, too boot.

There are four pictures that adorn the sides of the Temple of San Diego on the way to the altar. This one tells of the journey the Franciscans made on their way to Mexico. The imagery is abundant, not the least being the Virgin Mary as well as the image of Jesus' face between the two standing monks, within the mountain.

The entrance to the chapel of the convent (dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene).

That big can that you see, by the way, is not for garbage but for donations. Passing the hat, it seems, is just too passé!

The opposite side of the cathedral. In the chapel at the far end is an altar, where a second Mass is often celebrated concurrent to Masses offered at the primary altar. Behind me, to the left, is a chapel that is inset into the wall. There, the blessed sacrament is perpetually exposed for adoration. (However, unless there is no one in there, I won't be taking photos. The chapel, although grand, doesn't offer enough room to take photos inconspicuously.)

A friend (Dora) took me around town today, including to one of her favorite cafes. This is the view of the cathedral and park. Being the loyal tourist, I quickly snapped off a picture.
