The Bradford pear tree (Pyrus calleryana) is a member of the Chinese Callery pear tree family. These ornamental trees were commercially introduced to the U.S. in the 1960s for their beautiful white blossoms in early spring and their colorful leaves in the fall. Originally believed to be sterile, these trees have invaded the country by cross-pollinating with other species of pear trees. The resulting hybrids grow rapidly and can choke out native trees, such as pine, dogwoods, and red maple in forests.
