I finally finished my Comet, which I did as a project while recovering from triple cervical fusion in my neck. While the kit is non-complicated compared to bigger birds and bibes, it still took me about 5 weeks, working most mornings in my shop before it it got too hot or my neck got too tired.
I went with a bit oversized ancient Thunder Tiger 42 I got free from a club member. It was seized and covered everywhere with the worst black gunk I’ve ever seen. It cleaned and tuned up very well, to a conservative 13,400 WOT RPM for a calculated speed of approx 90mph with the prop I have on it. It’s a bushed engine, and I mated it to a drilled out smaller OS muffler, so the combo is quite light for its size. I squeezed in a 6 oz tank and a separate nose gear servo. She weighs in at 3.7lbs, even with some extra reinforcing here and there, and extended, additional hatches for future access. The CG is exactly as specified, with only a touch of lead in one wing tip for lateral balance. I’m guessing with a full tank it might be a tad nose heavy, which is ok with me.
My covering scheme was totally free handed as I went, using free or under $5 a roll covering I got buying out several guys inventory who were retiring from the hobby. From my experience flying my Outlaw Delta wing, differentiating the top and bottom is important for in flight orientation. That being said, I have never had a hot pink, day glow yellow, chrome, metallic blue and red plane before!
Your kit quality, plans, and instructions are excellent! It was a fun and memorable build for me. Not sure when my next trip to the field will be, but it will be a Delta Day featuring the Comet maiden and my Outlaw!
