From a Fighting Illini football game a few weeks ago. In much different weather conditions then right now. Wonderful Wednesday to you.
Just after a spectacular sunset, IDTX 4627 squeals through the curve east of 16th Street Tower on CN's Chicago Sub with Amtrak train 393, the Carbondale-bound 'Illini'.
Went to an Illini basketball game a couple of weeks ago. We won and it was a great time with the family.
On the CN/IC Chicago Sub, Amtrak train 393, the southbound 'Illini', has just crossed the Little Calumet River and is passing the Metra Electric District's Riverdale station.
Thanks to the usual birdies, recently caught a railroad unicorn in the wild. The Illini Terminal has operating rights on a short segment of former NYC in Litchfield, IL to serve an industrial park. Unfortunately, the last customer closed up shop a couple years ago so car storage is a way to make a little money.
On this day, 11 covered hoppers needed to be dug out of a mixed string of tank cars and moved over to the BNSF interchange. Track arrangments made this a tricky task and turned into an all afternoon adventure. After seeing this former Rock Island GP9 sit in the same spot (near the Denny's) for 15+ years, it was neat to see it switching around.
Eventually, the 1604 got the cars together and shoved to the BNSF interchange - passing over Lincoln Street in this view.

A few minutes out of Chicago Union Station, Siemens SC44 Charger 4618 begins its shove move up to the St Charles Air Line with southbound train 393, the 'Illini'.

On a cold, blustery evening, Amtrak train 393, the southbound 'Illini', is already running 20 minutes late out of Chicago as it makes its suburban station stop at Homewood.
E8 305 pulls by us after making the station stop at Homewood on its way down to Champaign, IL A nice looking CNW commuter car leads the consist of three or four bi-levels. Looks nice, but I wonder how the ride was for passengers making the semi-long trip.
Terry Respondek's pair of IT painted EMD's sit a Granite City, IL. This is their Central Port operation north east of STL. Currently stationed here is 2301 and the 2064, which I think is an ex-MILW GP40.They also had a nice stash of old EMD's just to the south. I got a flat tire right before taking this pic so I decided to walk back. Im not sure if they run on Saturdays but it would have been cool to see these on a train or even switching.
the temp this day made it to about 65 it was a good biking day
With the Sears Tower looming in the distance and the catenary supports on Metra's Electric District framing the scene, Amtrak train 393, the southbound 'Illini' works its way out of Chicago on CN's former IC main at 47th Street.
Just a second or two later, there were bright flashes and arcs between two of the baggage cars, and the train went into emergency, stopping just south of the 47th Street station- I'm guessing an HEP cable shorted out. 15 minutes later, 393 was on its way south again.
Seen from the 71st floor of the Aon Center, Amtrak 393, the southbound 'Illini' moves down the St Charles Air Line, approaching 16th Street Tower, just out of sight to the left. From this height, the abandoned right-of-way of the B&OCT's approach to Chicago's Grand Central Station is clearly visible.
Terry Respondek's IT-inspired GP9 basks in the afternoon sun after a hot day of working the branch at Litchfield, IL.
Since I can't go anywhere and shoot, I might as well get caught up on some stuff from last summer's trip out to my oldest daughter's house in CA. Matthew and I took off on the road together, Mom and little sister were flying into Ontario (CA) Airport. The first time I left the interstate was Marseilles, IL, about 5hrs into the drive. Time to get off the slab and onto some two laners and US Routes, US-6 in this case. This is one of the first things that greeted me when I left the boring Interstate. Yay us! Not a super special sign, but swoopy chasing bulb arrow, big neon letters... what's not to like?
An Amtrak IC corridor train, maybe the Illini is coming off the St. Charles Airline at 18th St. southbound in June 1974 with leased C&NW equipment. 2040 is an ex IC unit but was originally a Florida East Coast E9 and was retired the same month that this photo was taken.
A407 rolls into Champaign with a pair of IC 70s and a couple other units. That tower with the Illini emblem is certainly a fitting background with the deathstar logo on the 70.
Train 393, the southbound Illini, heads toward its next stop in Effingham, Illinois. Leading the train is a relatively new Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotive.
It's snowing lightly on a bone-chilling evening as Amtrak P42DC 69 leads train 393, the 'Illini', down what was once the south leg of a wye whose north leg entered IC's Central Station. Today it is the eastern access to the St Charles Air Line, which Amtrak trains on the former Illinois Central use to reach Chicago Union Station by way of 16th Street and a reverse move at Union Avenue.
One of Amtrak’s Illini trains are making a stop at a suburban station outside of Chicago, Illinois on IC’s mainline.
Shortly before being fired up for a photo shoot for the Illinois Traction Society, Illini Terminal GP10 number 1604, an ex-Rock Island unit, awaits her crew's arrival on the north side of Litchfield, IL.
Amtrak 393 accelerates through the small town of Peotone, Illinois as it continues its 300+ mile trek south to Carbondale. This train won't see many big towns on its way to Carbondale- save for Champaign and Effingham, pretty much everywhere south of here looks like this town.
Caught this nice surprise one on the way home from vacation, located in Litchfiled, Ill. This GP-10 was repainted to honor the Heritage of the Illinois Terminal.
