Turning into this short driveway becomes a journey to years ago as a deserted barn is fronted by a tractor that is not seriously used any more.
Searching the library of our memories for incidents that stand out from a farm upbringing can reveal things that had a larger impact on us as youngsters that others might miss.
The years of my youth were long enough that certain happenings took on an exaggerated significance because my world at that time was pretty small and was definitely centered around the going-ons of my father and his constant labors to tame farmland and raise enough livestock to pay the bills and fill the stomachs of his brood.
The warm months in southwestern Minnesota were all about tractors and machinery out in the fields: planting, cultivating, harvesting and plowing pretty much filled the months from late April through Thanksgiving.
I grew attuned to nuances that interrupted that patterned flow and an idled tractor in our yard told me something was probably wrong as my dad was in the saddle most days from before sun-up until after sunset. A silent tractor could mean a mechanical breakdown or more ominously, someone was sick or hurt and dad had come in from the fields to check things out. Decades later I can quickly recall the tension that grew in me until I found out what was happening.

Idler settled in at low tide on the Carnon River at Devoran. Devoran, in Cornish Deveryon is a village in south Cornwall and it once played an important role in the tin and copper mining industry. The village developed as a small port and engaged in the export of mined minerals and the import of mining materials and coal.
When I first heard Idles, I was immediately turned off by how abrasive sounding it was within the first 30 seconds of hearing them but then I started actually listening to the lyrics...Idles is one of the most progressive and intelligent bands out there So now, they are one of my favorite bands!!

We arrive at Haworth Station in time to see the steam train arrive and idle for a few minutes before completing it's journey to Oxenhope...
No not me, the vast line of stored BNSF locomotives.
This particular morning we were due to return home from our two centre American holiday. As is often the case I arose early and set off in search of something suitable to photograph. There city of Minneapolis like many others now has available bicycles to hire, so I presented my credit card to the vending machine and set off for a couple of hours on my hired steed. In advance I had printed off a couple of online maps so off I ventured heading north in search of the huge BNSF Northtown yards. Not only was it a beautifully sunny morning, the yard full of stored locomotives, the nearby shed was busy, the hump shunt was in use and there was a good deal of passing freight. Instead of leaving at 06.00am I should have been up at 04.00am.
Here, SD75M 284 heads a long line of stored locomotives. I believe that most of these locomotives did end up returning to revenue earning service, however in the intervening seven years I can't be sure that they are still earning their corn.

The thing I like least about winter is the intense quiet it brings . . . for me, spring is as much about familiar sounds returning, as it is new life beginning . . . birds singing, dogs barking, and children's laughter . . .

A fine veil of mist lingers in the forest on a still Autumn morning at Ballaglass Glen. Autumn colours still persist in sheltered areas, so it’s definitely not too late to get out and appreciate the spectacle 🍂
