W. N. was member of fencing fraternities, and since 1938 NSDAP member. He was buried at the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) in Vienna in a grave of honor sponsored by the city of Vienna, which was still part of Nazi Germany. Following an initiative by the Austrian Green Party and debates in the Vienna Landtag, a resolution supported by Social Democrats and Greens was passed to remove the status of honor in 2003. The right wing parties protested against it.
Still there are wreath-laying ceremonies at his grave. In contradiction to this heroization, I toned the picture red, symbolizing the deaths he caused, the shedding of blood this ideology caused.

Not always easy to get the idea of the Jewish holocaust through visiting this site. It is like being at an art installation that needs a written concept to get the meaning. But once you are there, in the concept, you get a general idea of the whole thing, a little further deep view and you get details and probably you can also experience something like being a lost human being who happened to be a Jew in the materialization of the racist Nazi ideology.

Vietnam war or American war in Vietnam; No war is just but what does justice even mean? The battle at Khe Sanh was the the longest, deadliest and most controversial of the "Vietnam War". The siege of the base started on January 21st 1968 as part of the Têt Offensive, and lasted until April 5th.
A short rest under an old US tank and a grudging sun allowed me to intensively think about both the absurdity of war and the madness of mankind whatever the side or ideology.
Sao Paulo has many classic modernist/functionalist masterpieces. This is the start of a mini series about them. Some were build during the socialist spring in the sixties. An unique epoch -the dominant political ideology was perfectly aligned with the normative orientation of the modernist architectural movement. It ended with the ’64 putsch that started a decades long military dictatorship. The FAU – the faculty of architecture and urbanism - is perhaps the most famous example of ‘60s modernism. I will post some pics of this building later on.
The Memorial postdates the FAU by almost 20 years, but can stylistically be placed as an example of the first phase of Brazilian modernism, whilst FAU is an example of the second phase - the Paulista Brutalism.
The picture on display here is more recent. It’s the stark looking Monument of Latin America, designed by Niemeyer and realised in 1989 .The monument consists of a vast field of concrete dotted about the edges with geometrical concrete pavilions, The building complex is spread over a total area of 78 thousand metres sq. and holds a diverse range of events, exhibitions and resources documenting Latin America's rich culture.
In the Pavilion of Christianity there is a permanent exhibition of Latin American arts. The Art Gallery exhibits famous paintings from all over the continent. The history of the region can be explored in the Library, which stores over a thousand motion picture films and documentaries, and contains archives of Erudite music, Brazilian Popular music and Hispanic American music.

Lady Liberty’s been stretched to her limits in 2020, as a viral pandemic and a social pandemic of revolt against the American Revolution continues. It’s ironic that those who are trying to erase our history, right down to the images of the founding fathers, are in favor of replacing our Constitutional democratic government with Marxism, an ideology that saw to the murder of over 100,000,000 people throughout the 20th century. It’s been many years since the inception of this nation, but we’re still going through growing pains in the civilizing effects of a nation working out what it means to be America. No nation has risen above the problems as ours has to become a shining example to the world… I believe God isn’t finished with it – or us – yet.

"The son and grandson of architects, Bluemner was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1867, and was encouraged to follow in his family’s trade.
He showed early promise as an artist as well, and his first one-man show of portraits was held at the Berlin Latin School in 1886. In 1892 he won a medal at the Royal Academy of Design in Berlin where he studied painting and architecture. Dissatisfied with the restrictive aesthetic policies of Emperor Wilhelm II’s government, Bluemner left for America that same year.
Bluemner arrived in New York, then moved on to Chicago
in 1893, hoping to gain architectural commissions at the World’s Columbian Exposition.
He designed prefabricated units for the Exposition and freelanced as a draftsman.
(I wonder if he encountered Adler and Louis Sullivan at that time!?)
He returned to New York in 1901, and the following year he won a commission for the Bronx Borough Courthouse that his partner finagled away using Bluemner’s design.
Although Bluemner sued and eventually won the lawsuit,
the experience permanently turned him away from architecture.
Between 1908 and 1910, Bluemner began painting in earnest, making sketching trips throughout New Jersey and Long Island.
In 1910, the year he “kicked the building business over,”
he met Alfred Stieglitz, who sparked his interest in
the artistic innovations of the European & American
avant-garde.
Bluemner painted his first oil in 1911.
“Bluemner left off designing buildings to be constructed in the real world, but man-made structures remained a dominant theme in the striking modernist paintings that occupied him for his last decades.
For the last quarter century of his life Bluemner devoted himself to painting, utilizing architectural elements as vital components of a new pictorial language...[and] as a painter Bluemner demonstrated his background in architecture again and again. Accustomed to developing architectural projects through multiple plans and studies, he followed the same technique in evolving each major painting, creating numerous preliminary versions in both black and white and color. In 1912 Bluemner sailed for Europe, where he had a one-man show of landscapes at the Gurlitt Galleries in Berlin.
After Berlin, he traveled to Paris and Italy where he saw the work of Matisse, Cézanne, and the Futurists, and created thousands of sketches inspired by the museums he visited.
Stopping over in England, Bluemner toured Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibition at Grafton Galleries and became fully committed to the modernist ideology."

This was a scene that I had to do because the Lost 20 are a pretty cool part of the EU and I felt it needed to be done. Its not actually confirmed that the busts in the Archives are of the Lost 20 but it is indicated that they are.
Also at this point in the chronology Dooku hasn't left the order yet, so it would be more like the lost 19, but just ignore that.

I've been moving to new directions. New life, new point of view... However the purpose remains very close to my ideology and intention.
So, It's going to be about life and biological entities. There will be fights, struggles, her and history and obviously death.
There is Darkness in every part of this world...From the roots of life to every inches of our veins. It's about where and how we live.... And the fate which changes her face.

Otto Schmidinger is from Queensland, and this beautiful painting of a pastoral scene could come from many corners of this country. Schmidinger has taken a traditional Australian landscape theme and given it a contemporary twist. And I must say I am delighted, as were the many people who thronged around it as well. It is all too easy in the contemporary art environment for people to go with work that pushes boundaries of genre, and has a few ideological axes to grind. So again it is a credit to the judges that this was deemed worthy of a place in the final 42.
Otto is straight to the point with his description too:
"I wanted to show a landscape outside of time. This painting is of one of the timeless scenes that I was captured by when travelling Tasmania. I think many people are attracted by that aura of endless tranquility and love Tasmania for that reason."

To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. It's celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.
While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.
Apple refused to bow to Trump.
If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:
**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**
Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.
A company that does not pander to Trump—
That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

マークザッカーバーグ氏の批判に、アップルは耳を傾けるだろうか。
僕にはそう思えない。アップルヴィジョンプロに夢を見せられた僕には。
メタのマークザッカーバーグ氏は、有名なポッドキャストに出演し、アップルはアイフォン以来革新的な製品を発売せず、売り上げも落ちていると批判したようだ。
アップル発祥のポッドキャストに現れ、アップルを批判すると言うのは軽いジョークに思えるが、真剣に訴えたんだろうと僕は思う。
なぜなら、今の彼はARグラスという武器を手にしているからだ。
おそらく、さまざまな関係機関や優秀なスタッフが彼を支え、それなりの目標を達成したんだろうが、パワーブック５４０cから使い続けてきた僕のような古いアップルファンからしてみれば、まだ物作りのアイデンティを彼からはまったく感じない。
これは他の、現在世界を制覇しているIT企業らも含む。
メタ、アマゾン、テスラ。マイクロソフト。グーグル。
社名が並ぶだけで、このテキストを読まれている方は名前と顔をすでに浮かべているはずだ。
僕は以前、スティーブ・ジョブズはアーティストではないと書いた。
彼は、現世界に散らばったイメージを紡ぎ合わせ、それを膨らます。そして未来へリンクさせる。それが得意だっただけだ。
実際に創作していたのはジョナサンアイブだ。少数ながらも僕のような意見を持っている方もいるだろう。
しかし、先述したIT関連の面々が、トランプ氏に再び権力が戻るとなった途端に会社の方針を覆す様子を見ていると、僕は一言、どうしても意見したいのだ。
彼らが作ったARグラスや車などには、肝心な観念が欠けている。思想という重い言葉や、軽めのアイデンティティと言い換えてもいい。
確かに、ティムクック氏やアップルの現在のスタッフらは、発売前の商品に関して口を滑らせることが多くなった。
僕は、以前から書いているように音楽が大好きだ。
外界を断ち、アーティストらがスタジオにこもって、怒りや憎しみ、喜びや悲しみを一心不乱になって一音に吹き込む。何かを託すと言ってもいい。
そして、完成したアルバムを発表し、どんな思いを込めて制作したのかを語る。（僕が好きなプリンスはほとんど語らなかったので、完成された作品を理解する必要があった）
アルバムが完成し、発表するまで、彼らはひとことも語らない。
僕の胸を震わせたのは、そんなアーティストらだった。
僕の中に淡く灯っているアップルの革新性は、いまでも消えていない。
それは昨年、大失敗だと批判されたアップルヴィジョンプロでさえも消すことはできない。むしろ、アイフォン以上の強烈な光を放っている。
ただの斬新な電化製品ではなく、細かな電気部品の向こうに観念や思想を感じるからだ。
残念ながら、メタのARグラスやテスラの車に、僕がその観念や思想を感じることは今後もないだろう。
長々と書いてきたが、結論は以下の記事だ。

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。

Before I get into this photo, I'd like to back up to my Footprints series which (for those who don't know) is a series that focuses on major ecological issues. When it came to consumerism I found myself stuck in trying to sum it up into one photograph. I felt it had to be it's own mini series and thus The "Good Life" was born....
Consumerism. It is defined as “a social and economic order and ideology that encourages the acquisition of goods and services in ever-increasing amounts”.
The result is a shift towards materialism, disconnection and competition that leaves us confused about what we need and what we think we need. Big business and marketing strategies know exactly how to feed into our instant gratification and more is more culture.
This is environmentally unsustainable. It would be impossible to look at reducing environmental pollution without looking at reducing consumerism.
It’s a simple question to ask yourself, “Do I need this or do I want this?”
The “Good Life” is a short series that poses that exact question through a juxtaposition of “simple and happy” to “excessive and miserable”. What do you consider the “good life” to be?
To help with this series I asked for help from the people I felt have a uniquely strong, respectful, intricate and protective tie to the land, First Nations. They not only have a connection of love and spirituality to the land but also a great sense of responsibility to protect it for future generations. We have a very powerful message to learn from these communities.
Thank you to my models and especially Jade Willoughby who not only took time out of her busy modelling schedule to be a part of this but collaborated with me and gave me guidance to what was appropriate in conveying my message. Thank you Jade!

Manual labour (in British English, manual labor in American English) or manual work is physical work done by humans, in contrast to labour by machines and working animals. It is most literally work done with the hands (the word "manual" comes from the Latin word for hand) and, by figurative extension, it is work done with any of the muscles and bones of the body. For most of human prehistory and history, manual labour and its close cousin, animal labour, have been the primary ways that physical work has been accomplished. Mechanisation and automation, which reduce the need for human and animal labour in production, have existed for centuries, but it was only starting in the 18th and 19th centuries that they began to significantly expand and to change human culture. To be implemented, they require that sufficient technology exist and that its capital costs be justified by the amount of future wages that they will obviate. Semi-automation is an alternative to worker displacement that combines human labour, automation, and computerization to leverage the advantages of both man and machine.
Although nearly any work can potentially have skill and intelligence applied to it, many jobs that mostly comprise manual labour—such as fruit and vegetable picking, manual materials handling (for example, shelf stocking), manual digging, or manual assembly of parts—often may be done successfully (if not masterfully) by unskilled or semiskilled workers. Thus there is a partial but significant correlation between manual labour and unskilled or semiskilled workers. Based on economic and social conflict of interest, people may often distort that partial correlation into an exaggeration that equates manual labour with lack of skill; with lack of any potential to apply skill (to a task) or to develop skill (in a worker); and with low social class. Throughout human existence the latter has involved a spectrum of variants, from slavery (with stigmatisation of the slaves as "subhuman"), to caste or caste-like systems, to subtler forms of inequality.
Economic competition often results in businesses trying to buy labour at the lowest possible cost (for example, through offshoring or by employing foreign workers) or to obviate it entirely (through mechanisation and automation).
For various reasons, there is a strong correlation between manual labour and unskilled or semiskilled workers, despite the fact that nearly any work can potentially have skill and intelligence applied to it (for example, the artisanal skill of craft production, or the logic of applied science). It has always been the case for humans that many workers begin their working lives lacking any special level of skill or experience. (In the past two centuries, education has become more important and more widely disseminated; but even today, not everyone can know everything, or have experience in a great number of occupations.) It has also always been the case that there was a large amount of manual labour to be done; and that much of it was simple enough to be successfully (if not masterfully) done by unskilled or semiskilled workers, which has meant that there have always been plenty of people with the potential to do it. These conditions have assured the correlation's strength and persistence.
Throughout human prehistory and history, wherever social class systems have developed, the social status of manual labourers has, more often than not, been low, as most physical tasks were done by peasants, serfs, slaves, indentured servants, wage slaves, or domestic servants. For example, legal scholar L. Ali Khan analyses how the Greeks, Hindus, English, and Americans all created sophisticated social structures to outsource manual labour to distinct classes, castes, ethnicities, or races.
The phrase "hard labour" has even become a legal euphemism for penal labour, which is a custodial sentence during which the convict is not only confined but also put to manual work. Such work may be productive, as on a prison farm or in a prison kitchen, laundry, or library; may be completely unproductive, with the only purpose being the effect of the punishment on the convict; or somewhere in between (such as chain gang work, treadwheel work, or the proverbial "breaking rocks"—the latter two of which are almost certain to be economically unproductive today, although they sometimes served economic purpose in the preindustrial past).
There has always been a tendency among people of the higher gradations of social class to oversimplify the [partial] correlation between manual labour and lack of skill (or need for skill) into one of equivalence, leading to dubious exaggerations such as the notion that anyone who worked physically could be identified by that very fact as being unintelligent or unskilled, or that any task requiring physical work must (by that very fact) be simplistic and not worthy of analysis (or of being done by anyone with intelligence or social rank). Given the human cognitive tendency toward rationalisation, it is natural enough that such grey areas (partial correlations) have often been warped into absolutes (black and white thinking) by people seeking to justify and perpetuate their social advantage.
Throughout human existence, but most especially since the Age of Enlightenment, there have been logically complementary efforts by intelligent workers to counteract these flawed oversimplifications. For example, the American and French Revolutions rejected notions of inherited social status (aristocracy, nobility, monarchy), and the labour movements of the 19th and 20th centuries led to the formation of trade unions who enjoyed substantial collective bargaining power for a time. Such counteractive efforts have been all the more difficult because not all social status differences and wealth differences are unfair; meritocracy is a part of real life, just as rationalisation and unfairness are.
Social systems of every ideological persuasion, from Marxism to syndicalism to the American Dream, have attempted to achieve a successfully functioning classless society in which honest, productive manual labourers can have every bit of social status and power that honest, productive managers can have. Humans have not yet succeeded in instantiating any such utopia, but some social systems have been designed that go far enough toward the goal that hope yet remains for further improvement.
At its highest extreme, the rationalised distortion by economic elites produces cultures of slavery and complete racial subordination, such as slavery in ancient Greece and Rome; slavery in the United States; or slavery under Nazism (which was defeated in 1945). Concepts such as the Three-fifths compromise and the Untermensch defined slaves as less than human.
In the middle of the spectrum, such distortion may produce systems of fairly rigid class stratification, usually rationalised with fairly strong cultural norms of biologically inherited social inequality, such as feudalism; traditional forms of aristocracy and monarchy; colonialism; and caste systems (e.g., Apartheid, separate but equal/Jim Crow, Indian caste). One interesting historical trend that is true of all of the systems above is that they began crumbling in the 20th century and have continued crumbling since. Today's forms of them are mostly greatly weakened compared to past generations' versions.
At the lowest extreme, such distortion produces subtler forms of racism and de facto (but not de jure) inequality of opportunity. The more plausible the deniability, the easier the rationalisation and perpetuation. For example, as inequality of opportunity and racism grow smaller and subtler, their appearance may converge toward that of meritocracy, to the point that valid instances of each can be found extensively intermingled. At such areas of the spectrum, it becomes ever harder to justify efforts that use de jure methods to fight de facto imbalances (such as affirmative action), because valid instances can be highlighted by all sides. On one side, the cry is ongoing oppression (ignored or denied) from above; on the other side, the cry is reverse discrimination; ample valid evidence exists for both cases, and the problem of its anecdotal nature leaves no clear policy advantage to either side. The first thing I want to bring up is that Mr. Brown Pelican's ideological colors may have changed over the years. Nevertheless, his core principle has remained the same: to resolve a moral failure with an immoral solution. If you don't believe me then note that even Mr. Pelican's lieutenants are afraid that Mr. Pelican will burn books before you know it. I have seen their fear manifested over and over again and it is further evidence that if Mr. Pelican's projects were intended as a joke, Mr. Pelican forgot to include the punchline.
For example, when I say that Mr. Pelican should just quit whining about everything, Mr. Pelican seems incapable of realizing that what I'm really getting at is that he wants us to believe that we can solve all of our problems by giving him lots of money. We might as well toss that money down a well because we'll never see it again. What we will see, however, is that every time Mr. Pelican tries, he gets increasingly successful in his attempts to preach hatred. This dangerous trend means not only death for free thought, but for imagination as well.

This is a shot of the main entrance of the University of Athens ‘Propylaea’, whose plans were designed by the Danish Architect Hans Christian Hansen. The wall-paintings were made by the Austrian painter Carl Rahl.
The university of Athens was established in May 1837 as ‘Ottonian’ University; in 1932 it was merged with the ‘Kapodistrian University’ (dating from 1911) into one larger foundation called ‘National and Kapodistrian University of Athens’ (NKUA).
The NKUA is considered as the highest of all educational foundations in this country and is defined by greatest intellectual value and ideological role; it may well be considered as the symbol of university education in Greece.
Visitors flock from all around the world to see the grave of Karl Marx, whose political philosophy has had such an impact on the modern world.
He was originally buried in his wife's grave on a small side path, but in 1956 a new monument featuring a gigantic bust by the socialist sculptor Laurence Bradshaw was installed in a more prominent location. Funds were raised by the Marx Memorial Fund, set up by the Communist Party in 1955.
Since then, many people who have been inspired by his thinking have been buried nearby – among them Yusuf Dadoo, the South African communist and anti-apartheid activist, and Claudia Jones, political activist and founder of the Notting Hill Carnival.
Ironically his ideological antithesis, the liberal political theorist Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), is buried almost directly opposite

A sculptural collaboration between Mother Nature and myself, appropriately set in a swamp, to commemorate the total and incomprehensible breakdown of the American political system into an idiotic ideological morass of nonsense, no longer ruled by the majority but by a bullying, arrogant and caustic minority whose goals and purposes are at best undefined, at worst blatant lies, and destructive to those who in every way are least protected. The title of the piece represents a more international perspective. For the American people, an alternative title might be "Crying Crane.".

I had planned on posting one of my Prague / Praha photos next but this shot seemed more appropriate in light of what happened today in my country....hard to be on vacation and not hear about the horror of neo-Nazis getting violent against anti-racism demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia today.
It's not that I couldn't see this happening in my country. Of course, I didn't want to believe it but I think we've always had a huge problem. I try to tell myself that in any country of this enormous size, there are bound to be some very good people and some very deplorable people who are willing to commit acts of terrorism and murder against people in their own country because they are so committed to hateful ideology.
But, I also know we have an administration that actively sought out for it to be legal in many states for cars to hit protestors, who encourage hatred against anyone who isn't rich, white, male, and able bodied, and has cut funding for anti-hate programs. Some of this racism has laid slightly dormant below the surface for decades and comes from a long line of both "nature" (genetics) and "nurture" (or lack thereof as the ignorant raise the ignorant). We've also dumbed down our public education system and forced teachers to teach to the test not to teach kids to think for themselves.
Between the problems Trump has created between North Korea and the turmoil inherent now with poor Guam and now the threats to Venezuela...when is the crazy going to end. I'm not going to stop protesting myself but all Americans need to be out on the streets taking back their country. We cannot allow America to turn into a nazi regime. We have to fight back. It shouldn't be merely about resistance either. It should be about creating a kind, safe world filled with empathy for us all. Certainly, this world is Gegen Racism or Against Racism. In 1879 Joseph Aloysius Lyons, was born into a devout working class Catholic family in this very house. Who could have known that from such humble beginnings he would become a Premier of Tasmania (1923-1928), and then Prime Minister of Australia (1932-1939). He died in office of a sudden heart attack on a visit to Sydney.
The story of Honest Joe (as he was known to his devoted supporters in Tasmania) is one that is central to the development of 20th century politics in Australia. His significance is understated by many until one sees how much he (and later his wife Enid) reshaped the entire political landscape. I'll give you just a few examples.
After moving from Stanley with his family to Ulverstone on the north coast in 1883, his social opinions were shaped by his working class family. When Joe Lyons became a school teacher, his sympathies still lay with the workers. In 1909 he was elected to the Tasmanian parliament for the Labor Party and proved himself to be an able local member.
In 1916 he became the Opposition Leader, and then Labor won the 1923 election to form a minority government. He must have impressed the constituents because in 1925 his government was re-elected with a majority (very difficult to achieve in the unique Tasmanian electoral system, but that's another matter). In 1929 he was convinced to take the national stage and so resigned his Premiership and was duly elected a Federal member in a landslide Labor victory. But the nation was about to endure some years of extreme hardship known as The Great Depression.
Now this national crisis precipitated a clash of ideologies within the Labor party. As a staunch Catholic, Lyons would have nothing to do with the Communist elements in the Australian Labor Party (ALP) who were calling for revolutionary restructuring of the Australian social and economic landscape. [I should add that a similar crisis occurred again in the ALP during the 1950s when another major Catholic faction split over the issue of Communist sympathies within the party, forming the Democratic Labor Party (DLP).]
Leaving the ALP and sitting as an independent, he was to join forces with another ambitious politician, Robert Gordon Menzies (1894-1978), to form the United Australia Party (UAP). Lyons was unanimously elected leader, and in the snap election of 1931, he led the UAP to a landslide victory in the Australian parliament. Lyons was able to form a valuable coalition with the growing Country Party of Earle Page, which secured most of regional Australia. Lyons proved to be an able Prime Minister, and helped prepare Australia for a looming war against Fascism in Europe and a belligerent Japan.
After Joe Lyons' death on Good Friday April 7, 1939 (for a Catholic there is no more auspicious day to die), his wife Enid (1897-1981) ran for parliament and was the first woman ever elected to the House of Representatives in 1943. She also served in the Menzies Liberal government from 1949-1951.
