Tomorrow, the Olympic Winter Games 2022 in Beijing will be opened. There has been a lot of discussion about the meaningfulness of this event, being held in times of pandemic, in an autocratic country that tramples human rights underfoot, and in the presence of a threat of war between Russia and Ukraine.

Olympic ideals and values seem to apply to athletes only, the main purpose is about big money and state propaganda.

Is the Olympic idea starting to starting to dissolve - as the 5 rings in this image do... ?

Something from the Tuscan dream landscape for a change.

Great Horned Owl in a local nature park.

While on my way to work one morning last month, I came across a doe and her speckled triplets in an ideal spot for photography. Problem? I neither had my camera nor the time to enjoy this deer family until several days later.

Knowing it was a long shot, I returned early in the morning and quietly walked around the area. Nothing. I expanded my search. Nothing. I eventually decided to try and rescue my morning's attempt at spending time in nature, by walking to a tiny nearby park I knew of.

The park was soo silent. I navigated the short meandering trial, pausing frequently, without noting any sound or sight worth investigating with a long lens.

Deciding to call the morning a bust, I was just starting to head back out when I turned my head and looked directly behind me. My jaw practically dropped open, for who was silently watching me all the while, was this beauty.

When I first spotted her, she was rather camouflaged in soft muted light. (I may upload one of the first shot's tomorrow).

She was perched on a snag overhanging a forest enshrouded pond. Once the sun broke through, it was just a matter of shifting to a spot where the tree behind her wasn't overblown in the sudden light, and waiting for her to look into the light.

While quietly spending time with her, I ended up seeing quite a lot of deer. Whoever said deer were silent?! There was a trail only they knew about down a steep embankment which they crashed through to the depression where we were; startling the owl and I each time they came.

First, it was a doe without a fawn, then a couple of does with fawns, and finally, a buck coming into his 3rd season. He silently stared at me for quite awhile from the other side of the pond edge brambles. Then, yes, he did turn and silently disappeared into the thickets behind him.

Of course, now that I was seeing the subject of my choice for the morning, I couldn't get a decent shot due to the poor light and excessive undergrowth, but by now I didn't care. I was in a magic moment, and enjoying it thoroughly...

A different experience in every season: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are exquisite, tranquil and inspiring all year round. Different footpaths, cycle routes and horse trails will lead you – with or without the aid of a forest ranger – through the beauty of one of the Netherlands' most unique areas of nature. There are no less than 80 fens in this stunning green expanse – pretty impressive, right?

Four seasons

Whether it’s the frozen fairy-tale fens of the winter, the dynamics of nature coming to life in spring, the musical croaking of frogs in the summer, or the explosion of colours in the autumn: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are a feast for all the senses.

Spot kingfishers, deer and roe deer, or bear witness to the wide variety of insects and water creatures in the fens and ditches. And after an exhilarating day of activity or sport, head to one of the large terraces to enjoy the peace and quiet and a tasty snack, lunch or dinner.Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens Groot Speijck Visitor Centre has a great terrace, as does Boshuis Venkraai. And both are ideal places to relax and soak up the surroundings.

First time I have seen, or photographed one of these, UKs most threatened butterfly. The male is on the left.

I decided to take a drive down to south Devon to camp for several nights, with the specific intention of spending a day on Aish Tor to see HBFs. So I spent 8 hours on Sunday on Aish Tor. It was exceedingly hard work, once I got up onto the hillside, having parked in my ignorance of the location, at Newbridge car park down on the River Dart; it was sultry and very hot and the butterflies had twin turbo boost full on: they simply never seemed to stop moving. Added to that, there were ticks everywhere in the sea of metre high bracken that covered the hillside, so long sleeves and trousers tucked into socks was de rigeur and made it even less comfortable!

Having spent much of the the morning, tagging along with a lady who had been before and seemed to know the best location, I branched off alone to search higher up the slopes where fritillaries seemed more frequent. It was 3 hours altogether before I had one settled on bramble flower in a less than ideal location, low down in a corner of a small area cleared of bracken. In mid afternoon another one showed up to investigate dog poo on the path where I was resting. Not long after that I had another male nectaring on bramble, but it was tight to photograph in a narrow path trodden through the bracken. Late in the afternoon I was shown these two mating specimens by a couple I spoke to, which probably saved the day!

Geophagia or geophagy is the practice of intentionally eating soil or clay. It occurs in different animal species and is best known from images of large numbers of parrots at clay licks in the Amazon.

The common explanation has been that clay is a natural detox treatment i.e. the intake of clay helps in protecting the birds from toxins when the ideal food sources are not readily available.

Recent publications based on years of studying clay licks in Peru show that protection from toxins is not a key driver. Instead the study shows that higher needs of sodium in the breeding season are a key reason for this behavior.

Also called Brown Parrot, this medium-sized parrot is a resident and nomad in savanna and broad-leafed woodland. Most of the time they move in flocks.

I just love watching all the birds come around the pond, ideal place for them with all the trees around to take cover after,

Sirocco, Bangkok is the World's highest al fresco restaurant & has great views if you're keen on twinkling lights & cityscapes.

This was a tricky shot for me as the beautiful young Thai hostess at the restaurant had confiscated my camera bag & would only let me take my camera - you can't argue with polite, demure Thai loveliness.

When these beautiful oriental creatures bow their heads & put their hands together & gently say "Excuse me Sir" it gets me every time & just makes me want to give them a big protective hug

- which of course would be completely inappropriate - you've got to be so careful these days haven't you?? (might get arrested in 30 years time - think operation Yewtree)

I wanted to capture the whole of the dome & get the meandering curve of the Chao Phraya river as well which meant a panorama without a tripod - not ideal but hey, aren't all problems really just opportunities??

Samuel Bloch, co-founders of Bloch Brothers Tobacco Co., built his family mansion on National Road in 1902. He named it “Elmhurst” in honor of the numerous elm trees growing around it. After his death, in keeping with Bloch’s philanthropic ideals, the mansion was converted into a retirement community called “Elmhurst, The House of Friendship.”

It's called the "Castroviejo Site" (ESP: "Paraje de Castroviejo") and it's a hill where erosion by wind and water has created beautiful rock formations, making it well worth a visit.

It's an ideal place for hikers, or simply for anyone who enjoys taking a walk and appreciating the natural scenery.

The "Paraje de Castroviejo" site is located three kilometers in a straight line north of the town of Duruelo de la Sierra and just 4 kilometers southwest of the source of the Duero River, in the province of Soria, in the region of Castilla y León, Spain.
