Karakuri Master, Master Shobei IX
Tonight I went to a presentation by Karakuri Master, Master Shobei IX. I discovered Karakuri a couple of years ago, and was immediately fascinated. When I found out about this presentation, by the last remaining master practitioner, I had to go.
To see these works of art in real life, to see them working, to be able to speak to the man who embodies 3 centuries of knowledge - it was a dream come true. I truly believe that we forget the lessons of the past at our peril. These devices, clockwork automata, were the first robots. To see the archer firing 4 arrows without a computer in sight was a lesson in mechanics, in design, and in sheer skill.
I was priveleged to have my photo taken with the master - I shall treasure this night.
