Two New York City Landmarks lit up for equality on #IWD2016 - The Flatiron Building for Planet5050 and the Empire State Building for HeForShe

Pakistani women and men walked side by side in a Purple Balloon Walk, with a call for support to make Planet 5050 a reality. With nearly 100 'marchers' participants included representatives from the Government, civil society, development agencies and the UN. Holding purple balloons, the walk took place on 8 March in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Administered Kashmir, from the Press Club to the Civil Secretariat

#IWD2016 - Jordan - Ring the Bell for Gender Equality

 

Amman Stock Exchange CEO Mr. Nader Azar, H.E Mr. Mohammed Saleh Al Hourani, the Chairman of Jordan Securities Commission(JSC), Dr. Fadi Khalaf the General Secretary of Arab Federation of Exchanges(AFE), and Dr. Yahya al-Husseini - Corporate Governance Officer - International Finance Corporation in Jordan (IFC), Mr. Giuseppe Balsito, UN Women Jordan Representative and H.E Mr. Reem Badran, the Chairwoman of Alhura Company for Management & Business Development, Ms. Taghreed Al-Nafisi, the President and CEO of Al-Multaqaa Brokerage and Investment Company, and Ms. Oraib Qabbaj, Chief Operations Officer, Jordan Institute of Directors, open the stock exchange ringing the bell for gender equality.

8 March, Ring the Bell, UN Women Egypt Country Office, the Global Compact Local Network in Egypt and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in partnership with the Egyptian Stock Exchange, organized the “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” event to focus attention on issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the work place and highlight the businesses case for women’s empowerment in terms of economic growth and sustainability, better governance and transparency, and other positive outcomes. Dr. Miwa Kato, UN Women Egypt Country Director gave a speech at the event in presence of the president of the Egyptian Stock Exchange, Minister of Social Solidarity, President of the National Council for Women, Minister of Investment, Minister of Planning, two female parliamentarians, and prominent figures.

The welcome address was delivered by Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita, Chairman of the JSE and the keynote address was delivered by South Africa’s Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela (pictured), a very well-loved and respected public figure in South Africa. Adv. Madonsela paid tribute to the roles played by Charlotte Maxeke and Olive Schreiner in South Africa’s struggle for gender equality, as well as highlighting that gender equality benefits everyone.

We were delighted to have Maria Walsh, former Rose of Tralee chairing the event as which took place on Monday 7th March 2016 at the IFI, Dublin.

 

The panel included: Ivana Bacik (Lab), Lisa Chambers (FF), Joan Collins (IND), Catherine Murphy (Social Democrats) and Kate O'Connell (FG).

In honour of the global campaign and other stock exchanges, the close to 200 audience members were given silver bells which they rang in unison with the traditional sounding of African instruments used to open trading at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Domestic workers celebrated the International Women's Day on March 16. The aim was to advocate for the ratification of ILO C183.

 

The theme was "Strengthening Maternity and Paternity Protection for All: The role of Stakeholders".

To mark this year's International Women's Day, the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland linked up with the National Women's Council of Ireland to jointly host an event with MEP Lynn Boylan evaluating the outcome of the Irish general election and the extent to which the candidate quota has contributed to the presence of women in the National Parliament. We were delighted to have Maria Walsh, former Rose of Tralee chairing the event as which took place on Monday 7th March 2016 at the IFI, Dublin.

 

The panel included: Ivana Bacik (Lab), Lisa Chambers (FF), Joan Collins (IND), Catherine Murphy (Social Democrats) and Kate O'Connell (FG).
