Gandalf is a protagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien took the name "Gandalf" from the Old Norse "Catalogue of Dwarves" in the Völuspá.

Seen here on a rare visit to Taunton, Somerset, UK.

Most of the remaining photos taken in Ghana are all difficult and confusing species to me. For some of them, I cannot even find a corresponding specimens in Larsen book.

I would guess this is Bicyclus istaris simply by a narrow and straight discal band on the underside.

Any correction/suggestion is much appreciated.

The Istari were a group of 5 Maiar sent to Middle-earth as guardians against the return of Sauron. The most powerful were Olorin (Gandalf) and Curúmo (Saruman). They came to Middle-earth in the form of very old men and aided the people therein. By the end of the Third Age, only Gandalf had remained true to their purpose.

Hope y'all enjoy these! Over the next few days I will do a post for the Individual figures and talk about each of them in more detail. Let me know what you think!

Radagast was originally a Maia spirit of Yavanna and was called Aiwendil, meaning 'bird-friend'. He was chosen as one of the Istari who came to Middle-earth in the year TA 1000. He was little concerned with the affairs of Men and Elves but was far more knowledgeable in plants, birds and beasts...

This is my entry into the Forest Life Category of CCCX

Hi all! As soon as I saw the hobbit I was coming up with new things to build that hadn't been done yet, and the house of Radagast really struck out to me. While he is only mentioned briefley in the book, he has an interesting personality and abode. I tried to put my own twist on it, while still keeping the overall movie look. Well, the world is supposed to end tomarrow, so this might be the last build you see from me. :O

i used some crazy digital tips to do the capes and the colors, also Gandalf has the hat on his hair, so it is not purist, it is completaly custom.

Happy Easter everyone!

Not too pleased with the way this photo turned out, but I wanted to get something up for Easter. This was somewhat based off of this photo. I apologize for the lack of uploads lately, I've been pretty busy. I'll try to upload as much as possible!

Hope you enjoyed!

Playing around a bit more with Mrs. Scratchen-Post's hair, this time merged with Gandalf's beard for more accurate hair. Not too pleased with the background, but I still think it's okay.

Hope you enjoyed!

Just a quick little portrait of Radagast the Brown.

Hope you enjoyed!

Shot with an iphone 4s at Hardcastle Crags, a few tweaks to contrast in Aperture, "glamour Glow" and coloured gradient filter in Colour FX Pro 4 and staff light and flare done with "Alien Sky" back on the iphone.

Based (loosely) upon this scene from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Radagast the Brown discovers the Necromancer among the ruins of Dol Guldur.

I tried to get the Necromancer's shadow upon Radagast, but it isn't really as distinct as I would have liked.

Hope you enjoyed!

A recreation of the poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

(I'm still not completely satisfied with Gandalf's pose and the overall image, so I may post a revised version at some point.)

Edit: I just replaced the pic with Gandalf in a more natural pose.

Middle-earth is an imaginary place which is the setting for most of the stories of author J. R. R. Tolkien. These stories include The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's stories chronicle the struggle to control the world (called Arda) and the continent of Middle-earth, between the angelic Valar, the Elves and their allies among Men; and the demonic Melkor or Morgoth (a Vala fallen into evil) and his minions, mostly Orcs, Dragons and enslaved men. In later ages, after Morgoth's defeat and expulsion from Arda, his role is continued by his acolyte Sauron. The Valar withdrew from direct involvement in the affairs of Middle-earth after the defeat of Morgoth, but in later years they sent the wizards or Istari to help in the struggle against Sauron. The most important of these were Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White. Gandalf remained true to his mission and proved crucial in the fight for Sauron's destruction. Saruman however, became corrupted, and sought to establish himself as a rival to Sauron for absolute power in Middle-earth. Other races involved in the struggle against evil are Dwarves, Ents and most famously Hobbits. The early stages of the conflict are chronicled in Tolkien's work The Silmarillion, while the final stages of the struggle to defeat Sauron are dealt with in his works The Hobbit and the main text of The Lord of the Rings.

'Forgive me, Gandalf', Frodo murmured, rubbing his eyes. 'I did not recognise you. You have changed in ways I do not understand.'

'Who can fathom the minds of the Valar?' the wizard replied. 'The skein they weave spreads wide, far beyond the vision of the Istari. This can only be the path they have decreed for me. Although I fear something to be awry.'

'What is that?' said Frodo.

'I cannot find my pipe.'

laying down some ground rules.

1. 3 hits and you're dead (4 if you have armor)

2. Drink a beer (or juice) to revive.

3. No hitting in the face or genitals.

4. Play nice, even if you're on Team Evil.

Gandalf the White was my contribution in Round Two of the 2012 Periodic Bionicle Contest on the old MOCpages. He was TOA OF FLUORINE!

That's why . . .

Bionicle Gandalf the White radiates both power from the strengthened bone density of his biological nature, and power from the infinite lubrication and anti-sticking qualities of his mechanical nature all due to Fluorine!

The negative ion of fluorine, the fluoride ion, is capable of bonding to many metals producing halide salts, the most valued being the sodium and stannous fluorides.

When consumed in small quantities the fluoride ion from these salts can strengthen bone and teeth by combining with the bone apatite crystal lattice.

Additionally, the element Fluorine can undergo reactions to form poly fluoro molecular chains, valued for their lubricating and anti-sticking properties.

AND IF THIS IS NOT ENOUGH… Fluorine spectral lines HAVE been detected as light emissions from Cool Extreme Helium Stars.

This fact alone, perhaps, ending forever the controversy that the Istari are Maiar or Angelic Star Beings. (Gandalf is of the Istari or Wizard Clan.)

This is why Bionicle Gandalf’s brain radiates the color of Fluorine Gas and why he wears the Mask of Light!

So, in a mythological, alchemical, chemical, mechanical, AND cosmological sense, my Bionicle Gandalf the White is truly TOA OF FLUORINE!

Shining like the brilliance of a Big White Toothy Smile or a Cool Extreme Helium Star, the transformed Gandalf radiates renewed strength, vitality, and light.

We saw some of this in the trailers, and the two-pack of figures suggests it, as well.

Bolg's cruel dominion over the dungeons of Dol Guldur remains unchallenged until one day an unexpected intruder arrives...

I created this Steward of Gondor thematic alternate for use with Círdan the Shipwright and other Elven heroes.

Mithlond is the elvish name for the Grey Havens seen at the end of the books/movies. Círdan waited here to take the Elves to the Undying Lands, and the card title was based on his first interaction with Gandalf when the Istari arrived here on the shores of Middle-earth.

"For Círdan saw further and deeper than any other in Middle-earth, and he welcomed Mithrandir at the Grey Havens....'Take this ring, Master, he said, for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness that you have taken upon yourself."

And thus the Elven Ring of Fire Narya was passed to Gandalf.

Círdan's great foresight inspired the title of the card, Seer of Mithlond.

Best thematic fits include Círdan, Gandalf, and any Noldor/Silvan of the north such as Gildor Inglorion

Mithlond is beautifully illustrated here by artist Alan Lee. The clear similarities with the movie imagery are a cause/effect of Alan being the artistic consultant for the cinema trilogy.

EigenLeben - Eine mehrdimensionale Keimzelle

My second Weta statue.

Wisest of the Maiar, one of the Istari, and just might be my favorite character in the Middle Earth mythos.

" Why not come out where I can see you, Charles? . . . oh damn, wrong movie., . . . "A wizard is never late, nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to."

Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, also known as Olórin (Quenya Tengwar: full spelling `Nj~N7T5 or vowel-abbreviated spelling `NjYN7T5; IPA: [oˈloːrin]), Tharkun, and Mithrandir (Sindarin IPA: [miˈθrandir]), was an Istar. Istari were Maiar that were specially chosen by the Valar to help aid the people of Middle-earth in the fight against evil. The Istari (Men called them wizards) took the form of Men but possessed much greater physical and mental power. For over 2000 years, Gandalf worked most faithfully against the rising powers of evil in Middle-earth.

Taken at AwesomeCon Washington DC April 2025

As a member of the Istari, the ancient and powerful Gandalf the Grey is sent to Middle-earth to orchestrate the forces of light against the growing darkness. Gandalf is a trusted ally and provides wise counsel to the many peoples of Middle-earth. First to discover the true nature of Bilbo's Ring, Gandalf guides Bilbo's heir, Frodo Baggins, to Rivendell. There, Frodo takes up the responsibility for the Ring's destruction. Guide and mentor to Frodo in his quest, Gandalf leads the Fellowship of the Ring on the path to the fires of Mount Doom.

The Gandalf the Grey Premium Format figure is a truly stunning representation of the Istari wizard, capturing every aspect of this legendary member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Lighting the way as the Fellowship warily moves through the Mines of Moria, Gandalf's staff is raised, its crystal illuminated by an LED light-up feature. The figure's hand-tailored clothing reflect the layers and details of the wizard's intricate film costume, and each piece is individually painted and finished to exacting standards, each with its own unique quality and detail that is the trademark of a handcrafted Sideshow Collectibles product. This stunning figure is an outstanding addition to any 'The Lord of the Rings' collection, and is the ultimate representation of the most beloved wizard of all time.

I expanded the Wizard Battle set for a Young Istari animation, and here's a frame from the video. It's all dark and moody, so you can't really see the set itself, but I'll post pictures of that later. This is really just to show the lighting and the glowing effects.
