Afternoon on the Everglades
Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' abundant wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. ― Google

When we first arrived (and for about 40minutes afterwards) the afternoon sun nicely illuminated the upper half of Wahclella Falls. From a fun afternoon exploring along the Wahclella Falls Trail with David Wang. Although the trail was quite busy, we had the talus slope above it all to ourselves for over an hour. Film is a little mouldy I think, you can maybe see a big spot of something in the top right window of the house. There were a few of these "bonus features" in the roll.

On the middle of the left edge of this photo is a ~30' tall tree, which helps give you sense for the 213' height of this waterfall. Even though we were about halfway up the landslide on the west side of the falls (see first comment below), there were still blasts of mist from the waterfall making getting a clean long exposure challenging.
To give this image a long exposure like smoothness but without losing some of the short exposure water texture, used Lighten Mode to blend a 5 exposure burst taken by simply holding the shutter button down for about a sec.
Along the beginning of the trail, above the parking area, the thimbleberry had abundant blooms, with scattered bleeding hearts and columbine along the edge of the trail below them, plus a few wild rose bushes in bloom at various points along the trail. Also along the edge of the trail, near the fork with the trail to upper McCord Falls, was lush green poison oak.

A 6 stop neutral density filter was added to the Circular Polarizer to get the exposure length up to 4sec to give this the traditional long exposure smooth look.

Last blast from the past (until next time). This was my second published photo, entered in a magazine photo contest (theme: Buildings). It won an honourable mention; I was pretty excited.
This doesn't mean I think it's a great shot; I don't. It's okay for an early effort. I wouldn't place it among my best work today - not even close. But getting published was a Big Thing for me in the early days: some affirmation that just maybe I was on the right track.
The pulp mill where I was working (see b&w pic a few days ago) shut down for routine maintenance for a few weeks in fall 1977, giving me a chance to fly back to Quebec, see my parents and brother, catch up with old friends, and so on. Old friends Susan and Kevin lived in Cookshire, in the Eastern Townships, and I made this shot on a driveabout with Susan.
Photographed near Cookshire, Quebec (Canada); scanned from the original Kodachrome 25 slide (ISO 25 !!!), shot with a Pentax Spotmatic and 24mm lens. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©1977 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
