Dusk Over Vestrahorn, Iceland

My favourite place in Iceland, Vestrahorn has it all and those who have visited tend to agree.

The towering 454 metre peaks of Vestrahorn (which is mainly made up of gabbro and granophyre rock) standing towering over Stokksnes beach, which possesses the most beautiful black volcanic sand with stunning sections of yellow marram grasses.

There are so many compositions to capture on camera here that it is always a wretch to leave it behind come time to leave. This image for me, which was taken on a recent workshop, satisfies my desire to shoot in portrait format, which is something that I love to do. The long, sweeping lines of the sand dunes offer some excellent opportunities for me to do just that.

I have created a second Iceland workshop for February 2023 as the first workshop is now fully booked.

Thanks for the help, Geri!

Went for a brief explore around the country roads near work on a windy day. Found a nice quiet lane (or so I thought), started resting my camera on the road, went for the 'pose' and suddenly a plethora of vehicles were using it as a cut through. Legging it back to the camera and scooping it up out of the way raised a couple of curious, if not unfriendly, looks.

Due to the fact that the wind comes almost from West, the waves become the same direction, from W to E, and wash the sand away

To stop/make less this washout effect, to break the stronght of the waves - that's the reason of this pillars. In the northern part of Zeeland there are beaches , many km long, and there are this pillars, always two lines together, repeating so about 500m. Depending from tide/low tide you can see 2,0m or nothing from them.
