I get a ton of phishing scam emails, but I've never seen one claiming to be the IRS. Now that tax season is about to start, this is a disturbing turn of events.
Phishing ebay, paypal, etc is pretty messed up, but phishing for someone's entire life details from the IRS is much, much worse. Burn in hell, scammers.
At least is wasn't drizzling couldn't stop thinking about the IRS audit, they rejected all my deductions, asked why I was getting interest income from Title Security Agency of Arizona (that's absurd because my 1040 has about 15 installment sales attached) and told me to appeal to tax court. All this was done over the phone. I was audited by the State a few years ago and it was very simple and face-to-face.

IDENTITY THEFT AND TAX FRAUD: Enhanced Authentication Could Combat Refund Fraud, but IRS Lacks an Estimate of Costs, Benefits and Risks
Note: The figure above is shown for illustrative purposes; the actual distribution of IDT versus noncompliant returns from legitimate taxpayers is unknown. To develop the magnitude measures above, we divided IRS's highest and lowest AUR category estimate by the estimate IRS chose in filing season 2013. Using these two extremes would likely result in too broad of a range in IDT refunds paid estimates.
So I owed taxes this year, didn't expect a refund... then yesterday I get a fairly sizable refund check along with this in the same envelope. What the hell?
Never knew what this building was but kind of like it. Then today when I took the picture and looked it up, it was the IRS. Thanks for wasting my tax money on your cool building IRS.

Federal Prohibition Agent
Born 1877
Died 3 Jun 1920 in White Co GA
"Agent Dorsey, known to his family and friends as "Little Bill," is the first known Prohibition Agent to die in the line of duty. During and after Prohibition, White County was known as one of the major producers of illicit moonshine in the South. In fact, the (then) county newspaper, The Cleveland Courier, used the axiom "covers the mountains like moonshine" on the newspaper banner from approximately 1930 to 1976."
"Prohibition Agents William Dorsey and Ed Carpenter were executing a Federal search warrant at the property of John Farmer in White County, GA. Farmer was suspected of operating an illicit distillery.
During the search, the agents discovered a still hidden in the loft of a shed. Farmer retrieved a Winchester rifle and began firing at the agents, killing Agent Dorsey and seriously wounding Agent Carpenter, who returned fire and wounded Farmer. Farmer was arrested and charged under State law with the murder of Agent Dorsey."

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Management Needs to Address Reporting of IRS Investments' Cost, Schedule, and Scope Information
Note: IRS's reporting of a positive variance indicates that cost and schedule are less than originally planned, and IRS's reporting of a negative variance indicates that cost and schedule are greater than originally planned. In order to depict this graphically, positive and negative variances reported by IRS have been reversed.
