I am trying to make something arty out of a wooden compartmented box that contained incense, and the remains of eight broken watches, plus a non-broken whole watch that just needs a battery and a pendant whose silver plating has worn off. I bought a stick of glue but might have to find another solution.

Aquí tenemos a Plácido Guardiola sobre las tres rocas del cerro de los Inques, un gran hombre que después de llevar más de 40 años haciendo fotos, decidió apuntarse a mi curso de fotografía "Más allá del disparo en automático", eso es todo un alago, y me hace pensar que mi curso ofrecía algo distinto a lo que este hombre podía haber probado durante estos más de cuarenta años, la técnica y muchos aspectos de la fotografía los domina mucho mejor que yo, pero lo que yo ofrecía distinto eran esas técnicas de fotografía nocturna y light painting, que solo se aprenden con mucha práctica en algo que te gusta.
En el suelo podemos ver las sombras de algún trípode y una persona, estaba una luna bastante potente empezando a subir y a meter caña, pero quería conservar esta composición con la retama de primer plano, podía haber borrado esas sombras con más luz, pero entonces hubiera afectado al equilibrio tonal de la fotografía, desequilibrándolo demasiado para mi gusto.
Iluminación con linterna Fenix FD30, que haciendo una crítica construcctiva hacia la marca, el zoom no es que sea de los más sofisticados, me mola bastante la linterna, pero sino es por un cabezal externo con lente casero, no hubiera logrado concentrar la luz al cerro sin torrar el primer plano, si que hace zoom en el centro del haz, pero no reduce demasiado la iluminación periférica, lo que dificulta su utilización en sujetos lejanos sin utilizar un snoot casero o cabezal con lente, como en este caso.
Otra detalle a destacar en mi opinión fotográficamente hablando, es el color de la luz, sin un gel minusgreen no me mola el color de esta linterna cuando buscamos colores lo más naturales posibles, y que conste que hablo desde mi percepción del color, que ya sabemos que cada uno la tenemos distinta, pero es bastante fácil de solucionar con un poco de magenta, dejando unos colores que ya me molan mucho más.
Después de este repase, las carácterísticas que hicieron que me comprara esta linterna son:
-Es una una marca con un nombre ya desde hace tiempo.
-Está preparada contra inclemencias del tiempo, sumergible 2 metros (IP68)
-Tiene 5 potencias (900, 350, 150, 50, 8 lumens) y modo strobe, memoria para encenderla en cada momento en el que deses.
-El zoom era algo que me llamaba, pero que al final me decepciono un poco, como he comentado, si que hace zoom en el haz más potente del centro, pero no reduce lo suficiente alrededor para el tipo de uso que le doy yo, esto también es fácilmente solucionable con un cabezal con lente o un snoot que nos reduzca el angulo de esa luz periférica.
-35mm de diámetro la cabeza, encaja bien en un tubo T8, no entra entera, porque se ensancha un poco antes del botón de las potencias, pero se queda bien fijo, además así queda el botón de regular la potencia libre.
-La marca de esta linterna patrocinan a unos colegas, como son los Light Explorers.
-Estoy hasta los eggs de linternas baratas que empiezan a parpadear y cambiar de intensidad en cuanto las has usado cuatro veces, y quería además algo más durable y resistente al tiempo.
Por todo esto me gasté la pasta que vale, que no es poca.
Quizás con esta sinceridad no quiera patrocimarme nadie, jajajaja, pero es lo que hay.
En esta foto se utilizó la segunda potencia más baja (50 lumens) para primer plano y rocas con sujeto, y máxima potencia (900lumens) para el cerro, todas con el cabezal con lente y gel minusgreen en la linterna.

Cell phone has a great weight advantage over DSLR when it comes to hiking landscape photography. Another big plus is that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is IP68 meaning it's more dust and water resistant than my Canon 6D w/ 24-70mm L f4. Landscapes can be demanding on a lens for corner sharpness which my phone isn't that great at, but I don't see it being an issue here. Probably because the main focus is still in the sweet spot. I didn't purposely make it black and white, it just looks that way.
Photos in this series are all straight out of the camera with the image size set to 16x9 so that it'll fill most widescreen LCD's. So, no editing at all, not even cropping. Not bad!

Took a road trip over to Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan as we've never been to Saskatchewan before. That turned out to be quite a fail. The Parks Canada website states:
"Hours of operation
Open all year round
Some services and facilities are open only during the summer season"
That to me suggests that perhaps there'll be a few businesses closed for the season and somewhat akin to what Jasper does. But nope, not the case, there was absolutely no one open, not even the two gas stations. I think the Elk Ridge Resort might possibly have been open according to the signs, but I decided not to chance it due to the snow and low fuel situation. So, it's closer to what Waterton does as opposed to what Jasper does for the Winter. Where Jasper has things like hot springs and gondolas close, but the rest of the town is still open and operating. It is certainly beautiful there and probably worth a visit in the Summer.
Anyway, not long after crossing the border, I spotted this beauty of a grain elevator letting me know that I've arrived in Saskatchewan. It was raining pretty good making my car look much cleaner than it is. Thanks to the IP68 rating, I see no reason why I can't take it with me in the rain while I get soaking wet. Lots of detail here, I especially like the tire treads and marks left behind. Quite sinky on that road. Without even trying, I spotted 7 wooden grain elevators between Flaxcombe and Waskesiu along with several other concrete ones. Saskatchewan really is grain elevator paradise.

Well, this cell phone series has come to an end. I think I've got a much better idea now of what works and what doesn't work on the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera. In bright outdoor landscape shots, I have no issue using my cell phone. Even indoors, unless you're trying to capture some kind of action, the OIS makes it work rather well. The auto white balance is pretty good too, don't recall anything offensive.
Here's Cilantro on the Lake in Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park. Beautiful cabin setting out in the mountains. We were here the week before celebrating our 8th wedding anniversary. We liked it so much we went back the week after for lunch. It was raining on and off both times, but it's still absolutely gorgeous. I certainly make good use of the Samsung Galaxy S7's IP68 rating. If you look closely, you can see how dense the rain drops were in the water.
In general, I don't think lens sharpness made any noticeable difference, even in the corners. Good to know! If I'm not concerned about sharpness on my cell phone, I don't think I need to worry about it on my DSLR either. That should just automatically be WAY more detailed thanks to its sensor size.
It's been a good 2 month project. It's taken us across 3 provinces to BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Really challenges the mind and gets the creative juices flowing. Learned lots about what's possible with a basic camera.

¿Cómo queda ahora mismo una comparativa entre los mejores terminales de este año? ¿Hay muchas diferencias? ¿En qué debemos fijarnos a la hora de buscar el más apropiado para nosotros? Vamos a intentar poner algo de claridad a esas dudas.
Pantalla
La característica que marca desde hace unos años a la gama alta es el tamaño de la pantalla. Ahí, especialmente en el ecosistema Android, la carrera ha sido intensa y sin descanso hasta situarse de media en las 5 pulgadas.
El nuevo iPhone 6 ha aumentado la pantalla pero todavía es el gama alta que más pequeña la tiene
El iPhone estaba lejos de esa medida con las 4 pulgadas de su iPhone 5s, pero con el nuevo iPhone 6 se acerca a la diagonal que el consumidor parece que acepta como óptima para un gama alta. Más allá de las dimensiones de la misma, las mejoras se han asociado con el brillo, el espacio de color y la visibilidad en exteriores, pero en densidad de píxeles está ligeramente por detrás y ha optado por mantener los mismos ppp que en el anterior iPhone.

Por diagonal, el iPhone 6 realmente está compitiendo con el nuevo Xperia Z3 Compact de tú a tú. Con él comparte tamaño de pantalla, densidad de píxeles y clava el peso, aunque en grosor el modelo de Sony sale perdiendo en la comparación. Ahora falta que Sony se de cuenta de que con su Xperia Z3 Compact tiene un caballo ganador y no lo coloque mediáticamente como el pequeño del Z3.
Diseño y dimensiones
Uno de los peligros a los que se enfrenta un fabricante cuando quiere dar más pantalla a un smartphone es es de las nuevas dimensiones. En el mercado actual tenemos soluciones que son ejemplo perfecto de cómo apurar diagonal sin temer por las dimensiones generales (LG G3) o el caso extremo, que sería el One M8 por su longitud exagerada para la diagonal que ofrece.
Aquí, el iPhone 6 hace un trabajo excelente en peso pero sobre todo en grosor, aunque no puede evitar que altura y anchura cambien significativamente respecto al iPhone 5s:

Donde el iPhone no responde a lo que ofrecen terminales de referencia como el Galaxy S5 o el Xperia Z3, es en la resistencia. Sí que mantiene un acabado y diseño muy cuidado.

Dado que en potencia y rendimiento hemos alcanzado en el mercado un punto en el que la gama alta está más que equilibrada, la cámara de fotos pasa por ser junto con diseño, dimensiones y pantalla, una especificación que puede hacer a un usuario decantarse por un terminal u otro.
La decisión que Apple ha tomado con su nuevo iPhone 6 es mejorar el apartado del contraste con enfoque por detección de fase, junto como en el Galaxy S5, lo que sigue la línea de las cámaras de este año, que han sido más conservadoras a nivel de megapíxeles (bien) y se han concentrado en otros apartados como hacer el enfoque y funcionamiento de la cámara muy veloz.
Lo que no introduce Apple en el modelo 6 “normal” es la estabilización, función que deja exclusivamente para el modelo Plus. Tampoco se une a la moda de la resolución UHD para el vídeo y prefiere incluir un modo de cámara lenta de 240 fps.
Y también ha caído Apple en la corriente de los selfies y dota de f2.2 y disparo en ráfaga a su cámara secundaria de 2.1 megapíxeles.

Con la inclusión de WiFi ac y NFC, además de la actualización a un procesador A8 con 1 GB de memoria RAM, Apple debe ponerse (basándonos en experiencias anteriores) a la par en rendimiento con la gama alta actual dominada por los procesadores 801 de Snapdragon.
En cuanto a la batería, Apple no ha ofrecido cifras de capacidad pero sí de autonomía, y en ese aspecto el iPhone 6 se coloca como un terminal que debería mejorar las cifras de su antecesor. Lo comprobaremos pronto.

Y en el precio, salvo el Moto X y el Lumia 930, lo que hay que pagar de salida por los nuevos smartphones de gama alta se mueve en un margen de 100 euros, aunque ya comentamos que la venta de los terminales con Android es que en unos meses están a precios muy tentadores comparados con los de salida, algo que no le ocurrirá al iPhone 6.
El teléfono de Apple sorprendentemente mantiene la memoria básica de 16 GB (en la línea de los Android pero ojo, sin ranura para tarjetas microSD) y elimina la de 32 GB, por lo que, si 16 GB resulta poco para el usuario como es de esperar, Apple casi está obligando tras una reflexión a acudir al de 64 GB, 100 euros más caro.
¿Y el iPhone 6 Plus?
Si el iPhone 6 sabemos que pasa a competir directamente con los smartphones de gama alta de las principales marcas, su hermano mayor iPhone 6 Plus lo hará en un segmento un poco diferente pero también importante: los phablets.
Ahí las apuestas más fuertes son el Nokia Lumia 1520 en el ecosistema Windows Phone pero sobre todo, el rey de este segmento: el Note 4. En el perfil más asequible tendríamos el reciente Ascend Mate 7.
