Small, stocky owl with large head and no neck. Pointed ear tufts are often raised. Varies in color from gray to bright rufous (reddish-brown). Intricate pattern is perfect for camouflage against tree bark. Yellow eyes. Active at night when they prey on small birds and mammals. More often heard than seen; listen for its descending whinny and longer trill. Roosts and nests in cavities, including nest boxes. Found in a variety of habitats with trees, particularly near water. A slightly quieter roosting spot from his original roost right next to the road where everyone parks. Of course, he was found and everyone goes to take his photo.

The intricated texture of a small dry sponge. It has shiny particles that in the light look like little gems that can only be seen with a macro lens.
Lake Seliger is located on the Valdai Hills at an altitude of 205 meters above sea level. The coastline is very intricately cut and, for the most part, covered with coniferous and mixed forest. After a few days of sub zero temperatures, the icy frost crystals were forming intricate structures everywhere.
I had to stack my 10+16+21mm macro rings to get close enough and reveal the fabulous structure of this feather.
The background is a block of cork.
This gorgeous lady blue posed beautifully for a while showing off her beautifully intricate patterning.
No wonder orchids have become so popular. Once considered difficult to keep, I now have two that seem to be happy in their current position.
I love the intricate composition and have taken many macro shots of the interior, but as this one was illuminated in the morning sunlight coming through the window, I could see an angel emerging.

The intricate branches and the intense fuchsia color of a beautiful weeping cherry tree in London's St James' Park. Its long and thin twigs covered with blossoms lean graciously towards the ground, creating a scented curtain of deep pink flowers all around the trunk.

This night photograph of Nanputuo (or South Putuo) Temple was taken during my visit last November to Xiamen University, China. Nanputuo is a famous Buddhist temple founded in the Tang dynasty in Xiamen, and draw many visitors during the daytime.
The photograph was taken using my camera mounted on tripod placed outside of the fence as it was outside the visiting hours for the temple. The illuminations for the temple and surrounding structures highlighted the intricate details of the roof and other structures.
Enlarge this photo to see the intricacies and the stalactite- a typical Islamic architectural feature in several of its arch, reminiscent of the time when Prophet Muhammad meditated in the caves,

This Pictish cross-slab, with its wonderfully intricate carvings (I love the sea horses on the lower right, complete with tails AND hooves!) dates to approx. mid 9th century. There is also a wonderful battle scene on the reverse - but I was shooting directly into the sun. Well worth a visit! There are also three roadside symbol stones on the road through Aberlemno which are very well worth seeing. Note though that all four stones are covered between October and April to avoid winter weather damage.
One summer morning after a heavy dew fell overnight, I spotted this intricate spider web. It was woven on and around some rhododendron leaves. The first thing I thought of was that the web and leaves were shaped just like a sailboat.
Well-camouflaged chickenlike bird. Intricately patterned plumage varies from cold gray to rich reddish-brown. Look for relatively long, squared tail with dark band near the tip, bold barring on the sides, and small pointed crest. Typically shy and difficult to see well. Often flushed from the forest floor, exploding into the air with a startling burst of wingbeats and then gliding down towards the next hiding place. Sometimes ventures onto roadsides to pick up grit. In spring, males beat their wings to produce a distinctive low-pitched drumming sound. Widespread and locally fairly common across northern North America, from the Appalachians to Alaska. Especially fond of forested areas with dense understory and secondary growth. (eBird)

My husband saw this well-camouflaged bird standing quietly in the grasses beside the trail. The bird waited patiently for us to go away, but when it became evident that we were interested in him, he ducked under the log and walked away. Shortly after, we experienced the adrenaline-pumping explosion of a second grouse from the other side of the trail. Quite a shock. It was wonderful to see this handsome bird, though. Usually, my year bird tick is based solely on his almost sub-sonic drumming during the spring.
