As promised I went back to the Chattri in Brighton to mark off one of the must do's on my checklist which was the startrail shot.

It was a lovely clear sky so I jumped in the car dragging my daugther along to see how this place looked at night.

I bought one of those Magnalite 4D torches especially for this trip as it's big, heavy, powerful, used by security guards and good for giving people a love tap on the head if they have any silly ideas in the dark.

Fortunantly it was very dark and I assume we was very alone.

As I scouted the Chattri during the day I pretty much knew what I wanted and where to put my camera.

Before I left home I replaced all the batteries in the torches and charged up my 2,000,000 watt torch.

Also I made sure I changed lenses to my ultra wide 10-20 siggy so I didn't have to do it in the dark.

I got my daugther to shine her torch on my gear so I could set up the camera on the tripod then she shined it on the monument itself so I could compose and pre focus.

I had to zoom in slightly as the moon was creeping into the edge of the shot and I thought it might spoil it but everything was A ok.

When everything was set up I played around with the camera settings until I was a happy bunny then sat down on the bench whilst my cable release was locked to keep taking pictures.

As you can see from the picture I wasn't too far from an airport as the amount of trails is quite spectacular, normaly trails are not wanted in this type of shot but due to the amount and the curves where the planes are following the flight paths it actually looks good IMHO.

Next on my checklist a Long exposure of this place with clouds flowing past the Chattri.

I took 114 pictures at 30 seconds each which equates to 57 minutes in human years ;)

I wanted to do longer but the temperature really dropped with a cold wind which I wasn't prepared for, silly me so 57 minutes it was ,then we done the 30-40 minute walk back to the car.

For the very last exposure I widened the beam of my torch and ran the light across the memorial for about 2-3 seconds.

I seem to be temporarily in a science fiction frame of mind.

Rule #1 In intergalactic dining- Decide in advance if you really want to order a dish that looks back at you. (Spaghetti and meatballs from Alpha Centuri falls into this category.)

Photoleap was used to create this image.

Image taken at night. There is 3 light sources in this image, 1 is the stars, 2 is the sun which illuminates the clouds (the sun has been down for quite a while), and 3 is the two cars on the road. The road does not have street lights, so without the cars, you would not be able to see the road in this image. We had to wait for cars to come illuminate the road when we were setting up the composition, otherwise we would not be able to see anything in the viewfinder. The clouds were not actually that orange, but long exposure bring out the colors better.

Discovery of another planet that might support life has given rise to speculation about intelligent life elsewhere in the universe – and whether such lifeforms would need the Gospel. But “if there is intelligent life on other planets, we definitely need to tell them Earth’s Gospel story and learn what their history is,” Nettles told Baptist Press in written comments.

I don't think I could have picked a colder night to head out for some light painting, but enjoyed it despite the blizzard conditions and fingers that felt like they were going to fall off!

Playing around with the strobe projector for the alien shadow. It's taking a bit of effort to create usable gobos, and not found a reliable way to use full colour yet, but working on it...

Something just for fun that kinda took on a life of its own, Had an idea for a short comic about a intergalactic bounty Hunter and his X-ray Dog (not pictured, tried it ....looked rubbish) that could teleport through time and space.

I'm not particularly fond of this but weeeeeee did it feel good taking a self portrait outside again.

Fujifilm X-T20 850nm infrared

With the weather being pretty crappy lately we haven't had much of an opportunity to try for any milky way shots for a couple of weeks. Jay e-mailed me with the forecast for the night to be clear at lunch time on Friday. We made a very last minute decision to grab our gear and head up to the Blue Mountains to try for a shot of the Milky Way over the three sisters. We met up with Gemma and Luke (fellow crazy astro photographers) and braved the cold for some galaxy shots.

This is one of the first attempts at a panorama of the Milky Way. It is bloody hard to capture it correctly and stitch it together. This time of year the MIlky way starts to go horizontal across the sky which makes it perfect to shoot as a pano.

I am looking forward to the next attempt and hopefully I can come up with something different.

What a radical transformation (thanks to Coiffeur-O-Mat)! This is the new Kelly! Will Benny recognize her? :D
