My dentist lets me bring Molly to the office, and while my teeth are getting cleaned, Molly is on my lap and pays close attention to what's going on in my mouth. Today, when the cleaning was done, she turned around and looked out the window into the woods it looks out on, where I've seen birds and deer and wild turkeys and others have seen a fox. This morning a squirrel approached and Molly got very attentive. It turned out to be a most curious squirrel, which came up to the window and kept staring at Molly, who was staring at it. This went on for several minutes. The whole staff saw the interaction and said that they'd never, in all the years of wildlife watching from the window, seen a squirrel come up to the window like that. It was a special moment.

27/11/2016; No idea what this lady was checking on her phone, but this was one of the more normal looks she had on her face in the minute that I was watching her. :D And it makes me wonder whether I make funny faces too whenever I'm checking something on my mobile phone.

Truly nothing more amazing than an interaction with a wild and intelligent animal.

VV 340, also known as Arp 302, provides a textbook example of colliding galaxies seen in the early stages of their interaction. The edge-on galaxy near the top of the image is VV 340 North and the face-on galaxy at the bottom of the image is VV 340 South. Millions of years later these two spirals will merge -- much like the Milky Way and Andromeda will likely do billions of years from now. Data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (purple) are shown here along with optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope (red, green, blue). VV 340 is located about 450 million light years from Earth.

Because it is bright in infrared light, VV 340 is classified as a Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG). These observations are part of the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) combining data from Chandra, Hubble, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and ground-based telescopes. The survey includes over two hundred LIRGs in the local Universe. A chief motivation of this study is to understand why LIRGs emit so much infrared radiation. These galaxies generate energy at a rate this is tens to hundreds of times larger than that emitted by a typical galaxy. An actively growing supermassive black hole or an intense burst of star formation is often invoked as the most likely source of the energy.

Work on the full GOALS survey is ongoing, but preliminary analysis of data for VV 340 provides a good demonstration of the power of observing with multiple observatories. The Chandra data show that the center of VV 340 North likely contains a rapidly growing supermassive black hole that is heavily obscured by dust and gas. The infared emission of the galaxy pair, as observed by Spitzer, is dominated by VV 340 North, and also provides evidence for a growing supermassive black hole. However, only a small fraction of the infrared emission is generated by this black hole.

By contrast most of the ultraviolet and short wavelength optical emission in the galaxy pair -- as observed by GALEX and HST -- comes from VV 340 South. This shows that VV 340 South contains a much higher level of star formation. (The Spitzer and GALEX images are not shown here because they strongly overlap with the optical and X-ray images, but they are shown in a separate composite image.) VV 340 appears to be an excellent example of a pair of interacting galaxies evolving at different rates.

These results on VV 340 were published in the June 2009 issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The lead author was Lee Armus from the Spitzer Science Center in Pasadena, CA.

In this easily comprehensible scene, the Virgin Mary and her mother Anne hold the Christ Child, probably observed by Mary's husband Joseph and her father Joachim. But the identity of the two older people remains debatable: some scholars speculate that they might be Biblical prophets, who lived long enough to see the Christ Child as God had promised them.

Joseph Paelinck stressed the humanity of the Holy Family in this moment of peace and intimacy. His simple, orderly composition gives equal attention to each of the individual figures. The device of the draped wall encloses the space and intensifies the viewer's focus on the interaction among the large, idealized figures. Elements such as the dramatic lighting and the sharply articulated folds of drapery show Paelinck's admiration of Jacques-Louis David's Neoclassical style.

Conowingo Interactions

While there are far fewer eagles at Conowingo Dam than are present at the height of the season, many interesting interactions still occur between the bald eagles, black vultures and great blue heron

Total grab shot but it makes for an interesting narrative if you care to comment.

On the day we visited the New Orleans Art Institute, award winning local art was prominent throughout the museum. This struck me as a unversally tender and comforting interaction. The colors in the background added ethnicity to the scene. It was lovely.

Saturday night in Lincoln was one of our best nights out there ever. We had such a great time, lots of interaction with other people.

We started out at the Skylight Bar in the Doubletree hotel on Brayford Wharf then went on to Popworld, which was a Fever Boutique last time we were there.

At Popworld we met the wonderful Ashliegh who was just great company all night! And we had a dance on the light-up dance floor too. A brill night all round!
