Definitively completed in the Swabian period, the Cathedral of Cefalù, which became a World Heritage Site in 2015, can now also be visited in its towers.

Built starting in 1131, its Romanesque style is enriched by Arab influences, and its appearance is pure wonder.

It is also possible to climb its Norman towers, which are different from each other: one is the square-plan tower, with battlements in the shape of flames, which would symbolize the papal miter and the power of the Church; the other is the octagonal-plan tower with Ghibelline merlons which would instead pay homage to the royal crown and the temporal power.

Originally a set up shot for another idea, but liked this instead!

~ Soylent Green instead Shoulder from My Way of Seeing ~

First time I have seen it was a few years ago. It sinked a bit on his right side.I don't know how it comes on my mind a few days ago...

It was there, looking desperate. sinking deeper. I had feeling it doesn't care any more.

It was sunny, but cold. I wasn't so brave to step in water and give him hug as I wish. I am coward, I know.

Than at home safe and warm I decide to create this "Soylent Green" instead my shoulder.

I spent a few days last week exploring a beautiful part of the Scottish East coast. Many lovely fishing villages and fantastic shoreline geology to explore.

I awoke early one morning to look at this fascinating harbour breakwater. It felt like I should have been catching zzzzs instead of look at them. The sun eventually rose and lit up one side of the harbour wall whilst also painting the clouds for a few minutes.

This five minute exposure used a Haida 15 stop ND and a Lee 3 stop hard grad for the sky. Very little editing here, just some noise reduction was needed.

I really like how the high breakwater casts a long shadow, with warm tones and cold tones either side.

Thanks for your visit and support. Let me know what you think...

NEW: My first blog on long exposure photography, with inspiration and advice. Do take a look and give it a review

I had to visit this well photographed bridge in Dunbar to take a look for myself and have a go at capturing it.

The weather was to say the least, wet and windy so quite a challenge, so no reflection or warm sunrise in this, instead my minimal twist on it!

Instead of the last blood moon I observed the sunrise in Imperia on the Italian riviera

The Þakgil loop hike was planned to be the hiking pinnacle of my trip to Iceland. Alas, I was too early in the year and the weather so far had been colder than usual. Thus, the trail was still deep in snow in the heights and the markers mostly weren't visible. Better safe than sorry. So I returned halfway and took more photos instead. This is a stitched panorama from one of the rare sunny moments. On top of the mountain, I even had icy rain. Hope you enjoy this view even if you won't find too many landscapes except for glaciers on my account.

Another one from the recent Fotosafari with my friend Christoph to the industrial area near Wesseling, Germany.

I just did a little bit of post-processing on my tablet using Snapseed for Android. I tend to use more jpegs now instead of RAW, as it's much easier to use, especially when you're travelling. In this case I just cropped the picture a little bit and added some contrast. That's it... Hope you like it.

"This is the book I never read

These are the words I never said

This is the path I'll never tread

These are the dreams I'll dream instead

This is the joy that's seldom spread

These are the tears...

The tears we shed

This is the fear

This is the dread

These are the contents of my head

And these are the years that we have spent

And this is what they represent

And this is how I feel

Do you know how I feel?

'Cause i don't think you know how I feel

I don't think you know what I feel

I don't think you know what I feel

You don't know what I feel"

Warm and hazy day, found some european bee-eaters flying around, one in a perch, in focus, and suddenly a second one appears and kicks the first one off. And you find that, instead of missing a picture, you are gifted with a different one, with the only shame of the slightly off focus on the left bird.

Still have had no time, no privacy, no life lately, so we're going back to the archives again. I did a little photo set over a year ago in Walsh County which I never posted a shot from, so instead of letting it rot on my cutting room floor I'm going to post those photos over the next week and a half and let you be the judge, should it have stayed there, or am I being too hard on myself... Again?

I don't typically do landscapes, and this one isn't processed up to my current standards, but it is what it is.

Taken at Walsh County.

Instead of driving directly from Abbeville to Blonville Sur Mer we made a side trip to visit Jumièges Abbey. I am glad we did it's a remarkable ruin that sits in one of the bends of the River Seine west of Rouen . I particularly liked the delicate towers that reminded me of buildings I have seen it Italy . It has quite a history too.

The abbey was founded in 654 on a gift of forested land belonging to the royal family presented by Clovis II and his queen, Balthild. Under the second abbot, Saint Achard, Jumièges prospered and soon numbered nearly a thousand monks.

In the ninth century it was pillaged and burnt to the ground by the Vikings, but was rebuilt on a grander scale by William Longespee, Duke of Normandy. A new church was consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Enjoying the patronage of the dukes of Normandy, the abbey became a great centre of religion and learning, its schools producing, amongst many other scholars, the national historian, William of Jumièges. It reached the zenith of its fame about the eleventh century, and was regarded as a model for all the monasteries of the province.

The church was enlarged in 1256, and again restored in 1573.

The fortunes of the abbey suffered somewhat through the English invasion of the fifteenth century, but it recovered and maintained its prosperity and high position until the whole province was devastated by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion.

The French Revolution, ended its existence as a monastery, leaving only impressive ruins. These comprise the church, with its beautiful twin towers and western façade, and portions of the cloisters and library, the contents of which were removed to Rouen when the abbey was dissolved. In the middle of the former cloister, there is still a 500-year-old yew tree.

instead of going in the afternoon, i went to my spot early morning due to bad weather prediction.

I took this one with the 50mm f/1.4 and had a lot of fun with this tiny lens :-)

Most of the mushrooms were lying upside down. I guess playing kids had a lot of fun destroying these beauties...

Thanks everyone for visiting my stream.

#March8

Not a ladybird which might have been a slightly more appropriate "supermodel" for International Women's Day because of its name, but an equally pretty Cryptocephalus bipunctatus. The whole supermodel thing is a relic of the past anyway, but unfortunately, we still haven't freed ourselves from questionable beauty "ideals" that often come across as beauty dictates. Social media and "influencers" don't make it any easier, especially not for the younger generation that is exposed (and exposes itself) to what one might call the "daily dose of beauty brainwash", recently taken to the next level with the all-new "beauty filters".

In Berlin (and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one of Germany's Northern federal states), March 8 is an official holiday, but not (yet?) in the other 14 of our 16 federal states. So this Wednesday – where all shops, schools, etc. are closed (and the weather is too ghastly to go outside – winter made a snowy-wet, cold reappearance) – feels like a very quiet, lazy Sunday, and I have too much time for writing rants instead of simply letting you enjoy this adorable, brightly orange beetle, a member of the so-called "Fallkäfer" (Cryptocephalinae) subfamily of the leaf beetle family. The name "Fallkäfer" (a beetle that falls or drops) derives from their distinctive habit of dropping abruptly when disturbed. This image also is a true oldie, I've taken it back in June 2017 at the beautiful public park Britzer Garten. The focus is ever so slightly off and more on the plant than on the beetle itself, but I think it's still sharp enough in general.

Wishing all of my female Flickr friends a Happy International Women's Day!

A new version of yellow daffodil for the "one-of-a-kind" flower images project.

Did you know...

If you present someone with a single daffodil, legend has it bad luck may be on the horizon. Instead, deliver a whole bunch of them: a gift of several daffodils is believed to ensure happiness to the recipient. But that’s no surprise to us! It seems impossible not to feel just a little bit of joy at the sight of them.

Daffodil bulbs contain a compound called narciclasine. Scientists have discovered this substance may actually be effective in treating brain cancer!

Our one day ashore at Palermo, Sicily, was cloudy and a bit stormy, and then the rain began. This was the window view of a hillside in Cefalú after we boarded the bus for the ride back to Palermo. The rain continued, and they gave me a refund for the walking tour of Palermo that was supposed to have taken place in the afterrnoon. We stayed "high and dry" on our cruise ship instead. Thank you all for the clicks, comments & faves.

My boss was climbing a deep slop, I should give her a hand instead of taking pictures though. :-)

Many do not know that there is a crater there next to Mono Lake ... and on this magical night the lava started to flow from a new opening ...

... or maybe there was just some lights from another photographer that lit the scene. This photographer was walking over to coordinate some light painting he was doing and the impact it might have on our captures. He had a red light on his head and a small led flashlight as well that combined for the light there among the tufa.

Then again, I like the idea of the lava instead ;)

I was just lucky to find two different dragonflies the other day by the lake, shot it against the lake, so, no clutter there. And this one happened to rest on this wildflower, couldn't been better. I did have another shot in this setting, except the dragonfly resting on the bottom of the stalk, not being intimate with the flower. SO, I chose this one posted instead.

Some days there are too many clouds to watch the sunrise. And then some days, those clouds crack open and let a little sun sneak on through.

I have come to see it as a symbol of resilience and strength—characteristics traditionally associated with the warrior. I no longer see this as the end or as defeat. Instead, I see a warrior and his horse who is taking a break before getting back up again. There is a degree of lament, maybe because I feel that way right now, but there is also a strong sense of honour and determination.

A reminder of no matter what you are going through to warrior on. Live your life because life is a gift.

A rainy day with Photoshop instead of camera. For my album "Creativity, Close-up and Macro". Take a look !

Spot the two birds :)

For a change, this is a new (outside!) photo, taken just a few days ago at the wonderful Britzer Garten, one of Berlin's biggest and most beautiful public parks (please check my album for more "Britz bliss", if you like).

For better dynamic range, I've used exposure bracketing (three images), pre-processed the images in DXO PhotoLab (sharpness and DeepPrime denoising only), from which I directly went into HDR Efex Pro to combine the images. I'm trying to get away from the annual Adobe subscription, and combining images from an exposure bracketing series in HDR Efex instead of Lightroom is one step into that direction. Unfortunately, whenever I think I can finally leave Adobe behind for good they come up with improvements such as the new "supersize" function (now also available in LR), a ton of new presets for LR, and other interesting stuff (and I'm still used to the LR/PS workflow, and the layers in PS). Well, maybe I'll be ready next year ;)

Extra sliding was done in Color Efex, where I added some "Brilliance and Warmth" and a tiny bit of "Contrast Color Range".

Happy Sliders Sunday, Everyone, stay safe and have a nice week ahead!

#Nuts

Pareidolia gone nuts? I was lucky that I still had the package of walnut halves that I'd bought for the "In Ice" theme (please see the first comment). So I thought I'd continue that story: a "brain", finally freed from the restrictions of its former ice skull housing – what would it do? I think it would begin to curiously discover its new world, discover its own intellect (without the interfering thoughts of its previous owner) – much like a child that grows up and gets more and more independent, and has an enormous hunger for knowledge, but also for mischief and fun :) My first idea was to make a pair of glasses for the brain / walnut; I thought I'd use jewellery wire for it, but then I looked at the small walnut halves and the thin wire, and thought: impossible! Unachievable! Too difficult for my clumsy hands! Well, I might have given it a (most likely unsuccessful) try, but went looking for nuts in the toolbox instead, nuts small enough to serve as eyes. So may I introduce you to Frankie, the brain that set out to conquer the macro world – but should adjust its eyes first :)

Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, stay safe and healthy!

Instead of uploading another frost picture I thought that I could upload a more colorful Rudbeckia shot I took in summer. I hope you like it!

The Village of Malone is the proud home to over 5,900 residents and many small and mid-sized businesses. This historic village, first settled in 1802, then incorporated May 14, 1853 as a agricultural

But with an historic grist mill, it’s a more uplifting story. There’s a plan to save it instead of knocking it down.

The former Horton Mill sits right on the Salmon River in downtown Malone. It was an active wheat grinding plant until about 1950.

Instead of being part of the scene, it almost seemed as though this Great Blue Heron had decided to come up on the boardwalk to check out the view of the marsh as the humans see it.

Instead of a partridge in a pear tree, I give you a cat in a Crabapple tree with my best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! I thought that my cat, Mr. Meowzer looked rather festive as I noticed him in an unusual place - balancing on the topmost branches of our Crabapple tree. Yes, he did get down by himself :)

Chinese gardens are constructed to recreate and miniaturize larger natural landscapes. Traditionally, Chinese gardens blend unique, ornate buildings with natural elements. Just about every Chinese garden contains architecture, like a building or pavilion; decorative rocks and a rock garden; plants, trees and flowers; and water elements, like ponds. Most Chinese gardens are enclosed by a wall and some have winding paths. Chinese gardens aren’t just thrown together. Instead, they’re deliberately designed and visitors should walk through them in the particular order that the garden was laid out.

The Chinese Garden of Friendship (simplified Chinese: 谊园; traditional Chinese: 誼園) is a heritage-listed 1.03-hectare (3-acre) Chinese garden at 1 Harbour Street, in the Sydney Central Business District, City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Modelled after the classic private gardens of the Ming Dynasty, the garden offers an insight into Chinese heritage and culture. It was designed by Guangzhou Garden Planning & Building Design Institute, Tsang & Lee, and Edmond Bull & Corkery and built from 1986 to 1988 by Gutteridge Haskins & Davey; the Darling Harbour Authority; Imperial Gardens; Leightons; and Australian Native Landscapes. The gardens were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 5 October 2018. The Chinese Garden of Friendship was designed by Sydney's Chinese sister city, Guangzhou in China. Sydney's Chinatown complements the area's already rich in Chinese heritage and culture. The garden was officially opened 17 January 1988 as part of Sydney's Bicentennial Celebrations and named the Chinese Garden of Friendship symbolising the bond established between China and Australia. 14974

Stay with me, baby stay with me

Tonight don't leave me alone

Walk with me, come and walk with me

To the edge of all we've ever known

I can see you there with the city lights

Fourteenth floor, pale blue eyes

I can breathe you in

Two shadows standing by the bedroom door

No, I could not want you more than I did right then

As our heads leaned in

Well, I'm not sure what this is gonna be

But with my eyes closed all I see is the skyline, through the window

The moon above you and the streets below

Hold my breath as you're moving in

Taste your lips and feel your skin

When the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly

Stay with me, baby stay with me

Tonight don't leave me alone

She shows me everything she used to know

Picture frames and country roads

When the days were long & the world was small

She stood by as it fell apart

Separate rooms and broken hearts

But I won't be the one to let you go

Oh, I'm not sure what this is gonna be

But with my eyes closed all I see is the skyline, through the window

The moon above you and the streets below

Hold my breath as you're moving in

Taste your lips and feel your skin

When the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly

Don't run away

And it's hard to love again

When the only way it's been

When the only love you know

Just walked away

If it's something that you want

Darling you don't have to run

You don't have to go

Just stay with me, baby stay with me

Well, I'm not sure what this is gonna be

But with my eyes closed all I see is the skyline, through the window

The moon above you and the streets below (Don't let go)

Hold my breath as you're moving in

Taste your lips and feel your skin

When the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly

I'm not sure where this is gonna go

But in this moment all I know is the skyline, through the window

The moon above you and the streets below (Baby, don't let go)

Hold my breath as you're moving in

Taste your lips and feel your skin

When the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly
