Louis Comfort Tiffany, Born New York City 1848-
died New York City 1933
Market Day Outside the Walls of Tangiers, Morocco, 1873, oil on canvas, 32 1ā8 x 56 in.
In 1867 Mark Twain traveled to the Holy Land and chronicled his adventures first in a series of newspaper articles and, in 1869, in book form as Innocents Abroad. His trip and his travelogue incited a wave of interest in visiting the Middle East. Of Morocco, Twain wrote: "We wanted something thoroughly and uncompromisingly foreign --foreign from top to bottom --foreign from center to circumference --foreign inside and outside and all around --nothing anywhere about it to dilute its foreignness --nothing to remind us of any other people or any other land under the sun. And lo! in Tangier we have found it."
Influenced by Twain, Louis Comfort Tiffany visited North Africa in 1870-71, and his travels inspired a series of paintings exploring his new fascination with Islamic art and architecture. Tiffany was one of the first American artists to turn East for inspiration. Here the city's ancient walls and mixture of Classical and Islamic architecture provide a calm backdrop for the city's lively marketplace.
Although Tiffany is better known for his work in the decorative arts and painting, he made significant use of photography. Like many of his contemporaries, he turned to the camera to obtain an immeadiate record of the world around him. Photographs, many taken on his numerous trips abroad, provided studies for his paintings and also served as inspiration for decorative motifs. He is known to have made many photographic studies in Sea Bright, New Jersey, in the late 1880s.
Tiffany also photographed the stained-glass windows, furniture, lamps, and artifacts made by Tiffany & Company, which were published in the firm's brochures. He also experimented with the camera in an effort to capture the grace of animal and human movements. Like his paintings and stained glass, they reveal the artist's interest in form and detail.

Its artworks reveal Americaās rich artistic and cultural history from the colonial period to today. Since 1968, the National Portrait Gallery has been housed in the former Patent Office building, a structure designed by Robert Mills in the neoclassical style and built between 1836-1867. This historic building, which is the third oldest government building in the city, is shared with another Smithsonian museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The building's marble and granite porticos are inspired by those of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
An undulating steel and glass canopy wows visitors who enter the Kogod Courtyard. Inside youāll find diners from the museumās cafĆ©, tourists soaking their weary feet in the shallow fountain running across the space, and students taking advantage of free Wi-Fi in the light and airy setting. The modern roof seals the center of the old Patent Office Building, currently shared by the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. Architect Norman Foster designed the roof to have minimal impact on the building by creating a support system that prevents direct contact and weight placement on it. Unlike most of the other Smithsonian Museums located on the Mall, this gem is found in the busy Penn Quarter of downtown D.C. It is a favorite place to bring visitors, not only for the impressive courtyard space, but also for the preserved architecture of the patent offices on the top floor. Check the Smithsonianās website for special courtyard workshops, concerts, or events. The museum is right near the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro on the green, yellow, and red lines.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum showcases rotating exhibits, which have previously exposed visitors to work created in response to the Vietnam War, glasswork, native women artists and more. The Smithsonian American Art Museum also operates a separate branch, the Renwick Gallery, devoted to contemporary craft and decorative arts.
