Note the top of the 4 ft black fence to the left. I prune these back to 3 - 3.5 feet every March and the new growth takes it well over 5 feet tall in most cases. I hand prune these to remove not only height, but inside the shrub, taking out the thinnest canes entirely and anything that is growing toward the center, rather than out. Some people claim to take their arborescens down to two nodes above soil level. I’ve never tried a drastic prune like that, but I might next year.
