A mother brown bear walks with her cubs along the shores of Cook Inlet, in Lake Clark National Park. I miss seeing this wonderful place this year. Life there takes careful planning, not just for wild animals but for humans too. The daily conveniences that most of us are accustomed to don't exist. Shopping frequently require a trip by plane or boat. There are no convenience stores and in many places there aren't even any roads. Internet connections are an exception, not the rule. Cell service is sparse, at best. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveBears #WildlifePhotography in #Alaska #Nature #Bears #LakeClarkNationalPark #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday #CoastalBrownBears

A coastal brown bear meanders across the shallows on the shores of Lake Clark at the mouth of the Silver Salmon Creek. She waits for signs that salmon of salmon. The high calorie fat content of these fish helps bears pack on additional pounds before the long cold Alaskan winter. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveBears #CoastalBrownBears #BrownBears #Wildlife in #Alaska #Nature #LakeClarkNationalParkandPreserve #Picoftheday #Photooftheday #Wildlifephotography

The days are growing shorter and the nighttime chill extends itself further into the light of day. The coastal brown bears of Lake Clark National Park & Preserve ready themselves for a long winter, sleeping through to the dawn of spring. If they were successful hunters, like this sow, they are fat and well nourished. Awakening in the spring, a new season will begin. Those less fortunate will perish during the long cold winter. It is one of nature's harshest realities. Cubs depend on their mother's to provide. That means that she must catch and eat enough not just for herself but also for them. That can be difficult when you have little ones to watch and protect, all at the same time. Despite what most people think, 70% of a brown bear's diet is vegetation. This bear charges into the river chasing ripples in the water that she knows signal the presence of salmon. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #CoastalBrownBears #Wildlife in #Alaska #Nature #LakeClarkNationalPark #WildlifePhotography #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday #DrDADBooks

On an overcast and chilly Alaska morning a coastal brown bear fishes at the mouth of the Silver Salmon Creek. She has had no luck so far, and stands on her hind legs to search for fish. Standing gives her a better vantage point from which to see. She looks for ripples on the water's surface that are the telltale sign of fish below. A good hunter waits until the tide is appropriately low. The less water available to the fish means the greater chance that she will have success at catching one. Frightened fish have been driven right out of the water and onto dry land during a chase. The majority of salmon manage to escape these bears. It takes many attempts before a bears is actually successful. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #WildlifePhotography in #Alaska #Nature #CoastalBrownBears #BrownBears #Bears #DrDADBooks #BeachBears #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

After running and throwing up quite a splash a coastal brown bear comes up without a fish. She looks confused, and I can almost hear the thoughts in her head, "Where did that fish go?" Fishing bears are unsuccessful frequently, but some bears are better than others at the hunt. The water here is still fairly deep and this allows a fish to escape more easily. When water is shallow, bears can sometimes drive a fish right out of water and onto land. Now that is an amazing sight! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #CoastalBrownBears #Brears #BrownBears #LakeClarkNationalPark #Wildlifephotography in #Alaska #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Wildlife in #America #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

So, two brown bears approach each other on a beach in Alaska, followed by a group of photographers. One bear looks at the other with a smile and asks, "So what do you like better, the taste of a Nikon photographer or the taste of a Canon photographer?"

I didn't wait around for the answer!!!

The coastal brown bears of Lake Clark National Park & Preserve don't generally pay all that much attention to the two legged species that tend to flock there to observe them in their natural habitat. After all, humans are not really part of their normal diet. Besides, when you try to eat them they tend to run and kick and scream, and generally cause a big raucous mess. It's hardly worth the effort! Brown bear diets consist of about 70% vegetation and much of the animal protein they consume comes from the ocean. Every once and awhile, however, a moment's glance makes me wonder just what they are thinking. This brown bear stares at us briefly. The look in her eyes suggests that she thinks, "He might just taste good with a side of sedge grass." #ILoveNature #ILoveWidlife #ILoveBears #WildlifePhotography in #Alaska #Nature #CoastalBrownBears #BrownBears #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

This coastal brown bear meanders at the water's edge nonchalantly sniffing at the ground. Her body language would suggest that she is completely unconcerned and enjoying the morning's sunrise, while looking for food. She would seem to be indifferent to her surroundings but her eyes tell a different story. She is intently watching another approaching bear. Despite the fact that bears are the apex predators in this region, competition for fishing areas can arise. Most of the time bears manage to share a creek or stream without as much as a squabble, but you're a bear, you can never be too careful. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #ILoveNature #Wildlifephotography in #Alaska #Nature #BrownBears #CoastalBrownBears #Bears #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

really, i love bears and a new piercing and hair? i am a happy camper.

Just got home from spending nearly three weeks camping in Grand Teton National Park, three days camping in Yellowstone and three days camping at Glacier National Park. Time for a real shower and some laundry - it might take days to clean up the car and the camping gear.

What a strange transition it is to be almost exclusively in the wilderness, except for a few brief trips to Jackson, WY, with nothing but songbirds to wake me up in the morning, the chilly period of getting dressed and trekking to the restroom before the short predawn drive to some of the most spectacular views one can imagine. The morning and evening searches for the bears and so much more. A lot more.

This is the first time that I've been online in four days and - it took 24 hours to drive home because there were many stops to sleep - and I haven't watched TV in nearly a month. The urge to throw things away and simplify is stronger than ever. Not sure how long that I can stay away.

This black bear shot was taken the morning that I left Yellowstone for Teton.

IS IT NOT TIME TO EXPOSE THE LIES ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING. HOW MANY TIMES ARE WE GOING TO BE FORCED TO SEE THAT POOR POLAR BEAR STRANDED ON AN ICE BERG. DID THE PRODUCERS OF THAT PROPAGANDA FORGET THAT POLAR BEARS CAN SWIM 60 MILES WITHOUT BATTING AN EYE? C'MON, FOLKS, LET'S GET REAL. WE HAVE A NEW PRESIDENT WE NEED TO SUPPORT. AMERICA IS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY, BUT WE MUST CHANGE...CHANGE OUR CONCEPT ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING IN ORDER TO STAY COMPETITIVE WITH CHINA, THE RUSSIAN "DEMOCRACY" AND SOME OF THE HATEFUL THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES WHO WANT US TO FAIL. GETTING RID OF THIS B.S. ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING WILL HELP KEEP GAS PRICES WHERE THEY BELONG, JUST ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF TRASHING THIS THEORY. WAKE UP, GLOBAL WARMING IS A LIE YOU NEED TO EXPOSE FOR WHAT IT IS: A WAY FOR SOME DISGRUNTLED POLITICAL FAILURES TO MAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WHILE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. JUST BECAUSE BILL O'REILLY BELIEVES IT EXISTS DOES NOT MAKE IT SO....

This three year old brown bear cub looks more like a scared puppy than it does a bear. She only stands about 3 feet tall and is still covered by much of the blond fur that she has carried since she was born. Larger, mature bears chase her from the edge of the river, making it difficult for her to learn to hunt. Her mother has long since left her on her own. Even if she were to meet up with her, mom would likely chase her off. It is a difficult time for young bears. Sometimes I wonder how any of them manage to make it to adulthood. Just one year earlier, this young bear would find safety in curling up on the beach next to a group of people. She realized that older bears were less likely to approach humans, and would tend to leave her alone. Last years she passed the days with her sibling. This year she is alone. Only time will tell if she manages to survive. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #WildlifePhotography in #Alaska #Nature #LakeClarkNationalPark #DrDADBooks #CoastalBrownBears #BrownBears #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

A brown bear shakes off excess water while fishing in the waters of Cook Inlet, just off Silver Salmon Creek. These waters are cold even on a good day but brown bears don't seem to mind at all. The fish they consume will help them survive the long frigid winter ahead. This photo is from my 2013 archive. Definitely missed seeing these furry friends this year. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveBears #WildlifePhotography in #Alaska #Nature #Bears #CoastalBrownBears #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

An experience I will never forget. So close and precious.

Using my 75-300mm zoom lens through a thick wall of glass with a million fingerprints all over it was a real challenge to get this shot.

I honestly considered carrying around a bottle of Windex and paper-towels but probably would of had a little explaining to do to the Zoo-keepers.

Emma the Bear

I think she would be an excellent girlfriend.

Waterstones, Birmingham.

This is my guy... I love him to death and he HAD to come with me from Australia. I gave up so many things, clothes, shoes, dvd's, etc etc but the bear had to come.

I have had him for like 10 years almost. He is my guy. I am surprised I don't have any photos on here of him.
