Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #BlackHistoryMonthMoment; Dr. Vivien Theodore Thomas, born August 29, 1910, was an African-American surgical technician who developed the procedures used to treat #BlueBabySyndrome, (now known as #CyanoticHeartDisease) in the 1940s, but of course he never got credit for it then. A white doctor named Dr. Alfred Blalock, took the credit for it, who he assisted at the experimental animal laboratory at #VanderbiltUniversity in Nashville, TN, then later at #JohnsHopkinsUniversity in Baltimore, MD. However, in 1976, #JohnsHopkinsUniversity finally #PutSomeRespecOnIt and awarded #DrVivienThomas with his honorary doctorate degree and he served as supervisor of the surgical laboratories there for 35 years. #ClapForThat!! He passed away on November 26, 1985.

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Judith Jamison, born May 10, 1943, is an American dancer and choreographer, who made her premiere at #AlvinAileyAmericanDanceTheater in 1965. She toured for 13 years with the company and is best known for dancing in Alvin Ailey’s renowned works including Blues Suite, Revelations and her famous 1971 solo Cry, a 15-minute piece depicting the struggles of black women, choreographed expressly for her; it became her signature piece. Throughout #JudithJamison’s dance career, she performed all over the world as a guest artist with the #CullbergBallet, #SwedishRoyalBallet, #SanFranciscoBallet and danced alongside legend #MikhailBaryshnikov. #ClapForThat!! Upon #AlvinAiley’s death, on December 1, 1989, Jamison assumed the role of Artistic Director and dedicated the next 21 years of her life to the company’s success and in 2011, appointed #RobertBattle the Artistic Director Designate.

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: I want to honor Robin Reddick on the last day of #WomensHistoryMonth because she was my neighborhood #Shero. As a little girl growing up in a violent neighborhood in Newark, NJ called West Runyon Street, I was soooo scared one day when two grown a_s bully, #MOTHERCLUCKETTE sisters named Berta Woodson and Irene Woodson, were threatening to jump my teenage sister Daphne Durden for no reason, then suddenly, Robin Reddick burst through the crowd of agitators and said, “yeah, y’all can go ahead and kick Daphne’s a_s and when y’all finish, then y’all are gonna have to kick my a_s!!” #ClapForThat!! Of course those two hell raising heffa’s got punked and fell back, because they knew Robin could bang!! When we moved away, I never saw her again and was sad when I found out last year that she had passed away. I will never ever ever ever forget what she did for my sister that day. R.I.P. #RobinReddick. You were one of the good ones.

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Bette Nesmith Graham, born March 23, 1924, was a typist, commercial artist, and the inventor of Liquid Paper. As an executive secretary, it was difficult to erase mistakes made by early electric typewriters, so she used tempera water-based paint to correct mistakes. #BetteNesmithGraham eventually began marketing her typewriter correction fluid "#MistakeOut" in 1956, however, the name was later changed to #LiquidPaper when she began her own company in the 1960’s. The product was very popular in the secretarial trade and by 1979, she sold Liquid Paper to the #GilletteCorporation for $47.5 million dollars in 1979. #ClapForThat!! Little known fact, she was the mother of musician and producer #MichaelNesmith of #TheMonkees. Bette passed away on May 12, 1980.

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Lucille Désirée Ball Morton, born August 6, 1911, was the star and producer of her hit 1951 sitcom, ‘I Love Lucy;’ one of the most beloved programs in television history!! In 1962, #LucilleBall, became the first woman to run a major television studio; #DesiluProductions, which produced many such popular television series as ‘Mission:Impossible’ and ‘Star Trek.’ She won four #PrimetimeEmmyAwards, was the recipient of the #GoldenGlobeCecilBDeMilleAward in 1979, was inducted into the #TelevisionHallOfFame in 1984, won the lifetime achievement award from the #KennedyCenterHonors in 1986, and the #GovernorsAward from the #AcademyOfTelevisionArtsAndSciences in 1989. Little known fact, growing up, Lucy and her family lived in Trenton, New Jersey for a time. This woman was #CLUCKING knee slapping funny!! #ClapForThat!! She passed away on April 26, 1989.

While working for #DisabilityRightsAdvocates in July 2014, #HabenGirma represented the #NationalFederationOfTheBlind and a blind #Vermont resident in a lawsuit against #Scribd for not providing access to blind readers, in violation of the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct. In 2014 Girma gave a talk at #TEDxBaltimore, where she also confronted them for not readily providing captions for their recorded #TEDx talks, including her own. Haben Girma was appointed to the national board of trustees for the #HelenKellerServicesForTheBlind in January 2015 and on July 20, 2015, she met with #PresidentBarackObama at the #WhiteHouse to highlight the importance of accessible technology. #ClapForThat!

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Elizabeth Blackwell, born February 3, 1821 in the #UnitedKingdom, was an Anti-Slave #Activist and #CivilWar Nurse and the first woman to receive a medical degree in the #UnitedStates. ElizabethBlackwell was also the first woman on the medical register of the #GeneralMedicalCouncil and was a pioneer in promoting the education of women in medicine in the #U.S. #ClapForThat! She passed away on May 31, 1910 in the UK.

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #BlackHistoryMonthMoment: Katiti Kironde was born in August 1968, became the first woman of color to ever grace the cover of #GlamourMagazine. #KatitiKironde, who was 18-years-old at the time and an undergraduate at #HarvardUniversity, applied for Glamour’s “Top 10 Best Dressed College Girls” competition and won the highest honor. It was also the first time that any black women had been featured on the cover of a mainstream women’s fashion magazine in the United States. #ClapForThat!
