( EXPLORED! ) Built in 1926 by Architects Rapp & Rapp, this former theater was one of the largest in the Midwest, seating 4050 people. In the 50's, it was one of the first to show 3-D movies. The theater closed in 1970 and became a place for live rock concerts. In 1976 it closed again and was turned into one of the most unique and beautiful parking garages you'll ever see. This view, taken on the 3rd floor of the parking garage, is facing the near 4 story tall stage. The building has a historical plaque, not related to the theater, as it was the location where Henry Ford built his first car.

Youtube: David Bowie China Girl 1983

and, Iggy Pop's version 1991.

"China Girl" is a song which was co-written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie during their years in Berlin, first appearing on Pop's album The Idiot. However, it was not popularized until it was released by Bowie on his album Let's Dance. Bowie decided to put the song on his album when Pop, his old friend and musical collaborator, was in financial straits and was close to facing bankruptcy. Bowie decided to release the song on Let's Dance so that Pop could collect half the royalties (as co-writer of the track) and get back on his feet financially.

Impressions from the live performance of the album Raw Power - Iggy and the Stooges - Hammersmith Odeon - 2nd May 2010

I wanted to capture this woman next to me in the audience at the old Hammersmith Odeon on 'film', as she seemed transfixed by the performance of Iggy & the Stooges that night.

It was a great gig ;)

( EXPLORED !!! ) One of Alice Cooper's favorite places to play at during his early years, the Eastown Theater caught on fire a few weeks back and I'm sad to say 2/3 of it is gone and there appears to be no saving it. Coincidentally, the week before the fire the ornate Shakespeare type heads were stolen off the roof arches at each corner of the building.

Some history:

Originally a movie theater that opened in 1930, it was also a big concert venue from 1969 thru 1972 seating 2,500 people. Concerts there included MC5, Stooges, Buddy Miles, Amboy Dukes, Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Alice Cooper, War, BB King, Albert King, Mountain, Steve Miller, Sly and the Family Stone, Grand Funk - and that was just in the first few months it was open! It has been known as the Eastown Theater for most of it's life. The theater operated from 1930 until 1967. Outside of Rock Acts, it did reopen briefly in 1975 for Jazz acts, again in 1976 for Performing arts and plays, 1980 for avant garde and exploitation films, and a last attempt in 1984 for live performing arts again. It has also hosted a few techno raves in it's time. It was originally designed by VJ Waier.

This is the place where Alice Cooper first started wearing a Top Hat, he had found it in the dumpster here.

The Hard Rock Detroit opening in 2003 the Compuware Building, One Campus Martius. The restaurant was one of several developments to the downtown core that aligned with the announcement that Ford Field, the new home of the Detroit Lions, would host the 2006 Super Bowl. The Hard Rock closed in January 2019 after Quicken Loans / Bedrock would not renew their lease.

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride

I ride through the city's backsides

I see the stars come out of the sky

yeah the bright and hollow sky

you know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger

I stay under glass

I look through my window so bright

I see the stars come out tonight

I see the bright and hollow sky

over the city's ripped backsides

and everything looks good tonight

This legendary bar/restaurant used to be THE place for celebrities and artists to hang in former 80s West Berlin.

October 1979: Chris Hodengfield interviews Iggy Pop in the Paris Bar:

“My last night in Berlin I waited for Iggy Pop in the Paris Bar, a subdued green room holding a few green souls. They had all stepped right out of Van Gogh’s The Absinth Drinkers. It was real art if you could tolerate it. And so has been much of Iggy’s music.

“I thought about Iggy and Bowie. Bowie moved gracefully, half-hidden, British, almost snobbish, always impressive. Onstage, he holds himself taut as a bow drawn by an arrow, and the audience waits for the release. Iggy Pop is sullen, graceless, original, willing, street smart, naive, American, seemingly doomed, but resilient, strong as a horse.”

Iggy gets so drunk he ends up rolling around on the ice in the street outside. :-)

Iggy Pop, who recently turned 70, by C215.

He seems to have been joined by the Wombles tagging team.

"I wanna talk like Iggy Pop", dumb but enjoyable novelty groove from the early 90s. The fact that this track came to mind rather than Stooges classics, says a lot about me...& none of it good.

Wishing you a tolerable Soundtrack Monday.

This track has a line in the lyrics about hypnotising chickens which, for some reason, is a concept I find very amusing.
