During the course of my signalling duties at York Rail Operating Centre, one of the workstations I operate is Leeds East Assist. This covers the area previously controlled by Church Fenton SB until its closure almost 25 years ago, geographically this includes Church Fenton itself and also from Garforth through Micklefield Junction. Indeed, the "CF" prefix remains on signal identification plates.

A few years before closure Church Fenton SB had itself taken over the Micklefield Junction area from Peckfield SB upon closure of that box, at which time a new NX Panel was installed at Church Fenton to replace the previous IFS Panel.

The IFS Panel still survives though, now being used as an Emergency Panel located in Church Fenton Relay Room to be switched in should signalling there be unable to be controlled from Leeds East Assist Workstation due to failure etc.

In this photo of the panel, a careful look at the box diagram shows a sticker covering the former Church Fenton SB location, and instead a sticker indicating the Relay Room is opposite.

Further signalling changes are due here within the next few years as the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project should see resignalling and extension to electrification through the area.

TRU Digital also plan to install European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2) from Stalybridge to Ulleskelf (with a gap at Leeds), but that's another story...
