On August 30, 2008 the Immanuel Hospital in Berlin-Wannsee had its yearly Open Day. The hospital is part of the Immanuel Diakonie Group (IDG) which is an institution of a Berlin Baptist community (Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Berlin-Schöneberg). The IDG administration is located in the "Villa Siemens". It was the summer residence of Arnold von Siemens, the oldest son of company founder Werner von Siemens. Architects were Paul and Walther Hentschel, the construction was completed in 1888. The Villa Siemens belonged to the Colonie Alsen, a recreational settlement area for upper-class Berlin citizens around the Wannsee founded by Wilhelm Conrad in 1863. After World War II Hermann und Charlotte von Siemens donated the real estate to the Baptist community. It is the only ensemble of the Colonie Alsen which has remained intact until today. The hospital operation is now in a building on the opposite site of the street.

CHAPTER I
Downstairs in the print room the rotaries were thundering, a river of pure white paper hissing through a complicated network of rollers and issuing at the extreme end of the print room as the midday edition of the Chicago Chronicle, printed, cut to size, folded and counted off in quires. .............................. I leaned there against the door-post, listening to sweet music, a symphony of grunts, grasps and the smack of bone against flesh, that gave me immense satisfaction.
