IDF Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer (nicknamed "Doobi", which is "Teddy Bear" in Hebrew) of Israel's Combat Engineering Corps.

Used by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) Combat Engineering Corps, the Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer is a versatile, dependable, durable, and well-protected platform. Used in combat and in counter-terrorism operations, the D9 is cited by military experts as a key factor in keeping IDF casualties low in the war against Palestinian terrorism.

This specific model shown here is the CAT D9R up-armored with ballistic armor plates coating, reinforced ballistic bulletproof glass, and slat armor (also known as cage armor or bar armor). The Israeli armor kit proved itself effective against terrorists and anti-tank weapons. The D9 withstood IED belly charges of 200 kg and 500 kg (more than 5 times the mass of high explosives needed to destroy a main battle tank).

In the skilled hand of the Israeli Combat Engineering Corps, the D9 became the nightmare of terrorists and a key factor in keeping IDF casualties low.

IDF Caterpillar D9: Overview of the armored bulldozer by Zachi Evenor (PDF in Hebrew)

National or military service is mandatory for all Israeli citizens upon reaching 18 years, including women. This sounds intimidating to English ears however I met these girls by the Western Wall who were entering their second year of service and were waiting to be posted to border control in Eilat. Most were positive regarding their time in service, having "made friends for life through shared experience" and "gained opportunity with the IDF to learn" while once commented that finishing can't come soon enough "as I want to begin my own life, not one decided by the state"

Corporal Maayan Levi, a brave “lioness” from the Lions of Jordan, the IDF’s second co-ed battalion. Born in Guatemala, Maayan was adopted by Israeli parents at the age of six months. “The State of Israel has given me everything I could ask for - and now it's my chance to give back to Israel.”
