Paul Segers (Nederland, 1976) maakt sculpturen waarin idealisme en wanhoop met elkaar worden verknoopt. Zijn arbeidsintensieve constructies ogen als overblijfselen van een vergane wereld. Ze doen zich voor als industriële fossielen die weer tot leven kunnen worden gewekt. Als beeldhouwer combineert hij technologie en ambachtelijkheid in constructies die een aanzien hebben van een archeologische vondst of een gecrashte UFO.
Bij de oude IJsselcentrale van Zwolle is zijn ‘Implanter’ te zien. Deze industriële sculptuur is als een futuristisch implantaat dat zijn functie heeft verloren. De kern van zijn ‘Implanter’ bestaat uit onderdelen van een verouderde een deeltjesversneller van de High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, de stad waar de kunstenaar woont en werkt. Paul Segers brengt deze sculptuur al bouwende tot stand, waardoor de energie van de maker voelbaar is tegenover de ontzagwekkende energie die door de IJsselcentrale kon worden opgewekt. Paul Segers voert een strijd met de materie die hij met zijn verbeeldingskracht weet te winnen. Zo ontstaat als het ware een Stonehenge van de twintigste eeuw: een geheimzinnige plek die een spiritualiteit verraadt die we niet meer kunnen duiden.

These days, does anyone remember The Clash for anything besides "Rock The Casbah," or maybe "London Calling"? People used to take The Clash as seriously as they took themselves, which was pretty damn serious. This book is, in some ways, kind of like many of the Clash's songs, i.e. skirting the line between well-written and over-written. Don't get me wrong - The Clash had some wonderful songs, but they also had a bunch that sounded like naive political ranting and raving set to music. Having said that, I hope you will decide for yourself how accurate I am in that assessment. In other words, don't let it discourage you from actually listening to The Clash if you haven't heard them.
Anyway, the book goes into exhaustive detail about the band's formation, their every move during their existence, and finally their messy breakup.What emerges is a story full of contradictions. The Clash weren't quite what they sold themselves as being - not that anyone cared at the time. They were never friends who went through the usual organic process of making music together of their own choosing - they were more or less assembled by their manager, who also determined their image and even the subject matter of their songs. The Clash were definitely one of the most idealistic bands to ever come along, even if you wonder to what extent that idealism was invented for them. At their best, their performances were rightly described as "incendiary." At their worst, they came off as politically holier-than-thou, and everyone knows rock and roll has never offered political solutions and never will.
It's true that once The Clash's career got off the ground, they decided they were going to be nobody's puppets and fired the manager who'd guided them early-on. Then after a few years of artistic success but financial chaos they decided the solution to their problems was to bring this same manager back. He proceeded to drive a wedge between the members and basically destroy the band. This manager decided he was going to write all the songs on the final Clash album himself - and the remaining members were so brainwashed they went along with that plan. The last Clash album was called, with the utmost of irony, "Cut The Crap."
The story of a band like The Clash is still a little hard to believe, even 30 years after their breakup. But it did happen, and how it happened is all recounted in this book.
