See the thin cracks running through the top... And the edges are *extremely* sharp - must be sanded.
Cut using a bucket of water (sink or bathtub would work too), nail polish remover (the acetone type), string or yarn, and a lighter or matches.
There are videos on YouTube.com - but for a quick run through, here's how we did this:
1) gather your supplies.
2) wrap string around bottle 5-6 times and tie in a knot.
3) slip off and soak in acetone.
4) slide the string back onto the bottle about where you'd like it to break.
5) holding vertical over your water source, light the string.
-- be careful, if you have acetone on the bottle (drips) or on your hands, they'll flash with flame too.
6) continually turn bottle to keep flame even all around.
7) when flame starts to die out, submerge in water.
If everything goes correctly, it will crack apart.
I did this 3 times before we finally got it to work - the first 2 times I don't think we had enough string wrapped around the bottle.

One of my guilty pleasures ...
First pictures with the new EF 300mm f/2.8l ii. I can't be more happy with this lens. Unfortunately, it was raining all weekend and I had to suffice with some indoor shots with this amazing lens. The depth of field is so shallow, that you can isolate the embossing on the front and blur out the back of this IBC bottle despite the glass.
IBC is one of the largest industry tradeshows in the world, showcasing 1,300+ exhibitors over 13+ halls of the RAI. It is one of the premier events worldwide for the unveiling of new products and cutting-edge technology in the electronic media space. 3D was the main theme for 2010.

The standard valves on our 300 gallon IBC tanks tend to fail. They are
2" plastic handles that the sun destroys. Rather than wait for the
valve to go I have re-plumbed all four of our rainwater IBCs with:
2" coupling --> 3/4" reducer --> 3/4" valve
It's only $4 in parts that gives us some assurance that we won't wake
up one morning to find 300 gallons of our precious rain water on the
ground.
