It wasn't easy to make a choice for the Happy Caturday theme "Special Features" but then I took this closeup photo of Sethi which shows the spots in his right eye. These spots are due to a benign hyperpigmentation which is apparently quite common but none of our cats has ever had that. So this is definitely a special feature of Sethi. Happy Caturday !
The Ayam Cemani is a rare breed of chicken from Indonesia. In Indonesian "ayam" means "chicken" and "cemani means "thoroughly black". Due to a dominant gene which causes hyperpigmentation not only their feathers and beak are black but their skin and inner organs too.
The photo was taken at our local zoo.

For years I have struggled with ill health and very little help from drs in general. I have even ended up in A&E 3 times and been sent home non the wiser. I was desperate to get my life back so started to look around. Its only the last year I came across the B12 society and started to read symptoms of B12 deficiency and realised this could be my issue. A year later of doing self injections (something I never dreamed I could do ) and with the support of the B12 society B12Wakeup Facebook group I am beginning to see a very different me. It is truly a miracle in my eyes. I'm getting out and about and the fatigue has gone, the difference is amazing. I truly believe the b12 society gave me my life back and I will always be truly grateful to them and God for leading me to them.
I would encourage everyone to watch the Sally Pacholok film on youtube. Its eye opening and shows how so many illnesses eg dementia, MS , ME etc can be misdiagnosed B12 deficiency.

What could be the common link between the following clinical situations (all are real cases from my clinical practice):
1. 25-year old airhostess with rapid decline in memory and higher cognitive functions of 6 months duration (suggestive of #dementia),
2. 35-year old man with two weeks history of tremors, slowness of movements and rigidity (mimicking #Parkinsons disease),
3. 22-year old man with repeated #seizures (fits), which was difficult to control with anti-epileptic drugs,
4. 18-year old with features of #anxiety, #depression and #panic attacks of one year duration (had only partial relief with anti-depressants),
5. 30-year old lady with frank #psychosis (hallucinations, delusions) of six months duration,
6. 18-year old girl with 6-month history of tinnitus and #hearing impairment, which was getting worse over time,
7. Blurring of #vision and poor vision in a 22-year old man,
8. Burning, tingling and numbness of hands and feet for one year in a 28-year old man,
9. Hyperpigmentation (darker discoloration) of skin over hands and feet,
10. Generalized weakness, fatigue and breathlessness on exertion in a 25-year old woman (hemoglobin of 8 gm%)
Many of you would have correctly guessed it by now: All these clinical symptoms were caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.
You would be happy to note that they all improved with treatment.
The key to a good outcome in vitamin B12-deficiency related diseases is early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment.

Below is the first of a 3-part exploration of popular skin care acids. Education is of utmost importance to me. An educated consumer is an empowered consumer.
Part 1 Benefits of the Top 5 Skin Care Acids
Part 2 Moisturizing Skin Care Acids
Part 3 What does pH have to do with a skin care acid’s effectiveness?
Part 1 -
When you think of having an acid applied to your face, do you envision a scene from a horror film? No worries. The ongoing application of low-intensity acids can be an integral part of an effective age and acne management home program.
Choosing an over the counter (OTC) or cosmetic product that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) doesn’t have to be a daunting task.
There are 3 primary factors to consider when choosing a product that contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids.
Which acid will best fulfill my skin care needs?
What percentage of the active acid(s) should I use?
What is the pH of the product that the acid is delivered in?
What do AHAs and BHAs do for the skin? There are a variety of acids used in the skin care industry. Each acid has a different set of attributes. Let’s explore some of the benefits of acids most commonly used in cosmetics and OTC products.
Glycolic Acid is a very popular Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) derived from cane sugar. It is found in many skin care treatment products that focus on minimizing signs of aging and acne. Glycolic Acid:
Exfoliates the dead skin cell layer, encouraging oil and dead skin cells to be released from the skin
Decreases fine lines and wrinkles
Attracts water into the skin (hydrophilic)
Helps dull, tired skin to be replaced with fresh, glowing skin
Decreases hyperpigmentation (discoloration) for a more even skin tone
Smooths and softens skin’s texture
Glycolic’s small molecule size allows deeper penetration which unclogs follicles and dissolves the dead skin cell build up in pores (blackheads)
IGOG Skin Care products that contain Glycolic Acid:
No. 10 Organic Illuminating Serum
No. 19 Organic Brightening Moisturizer
No. 20 Organic Gravity Defying Moisturizer
No. 22 Creamy Smoothing Moisturizer
No. 26 Organic Multi-Acid Mask (coming soon)
Lactic Acid is a fabulous AHA used to brighten and smooth the skin. Lactic Acid is derived from milk. Lactic acid:
Is easily tolerated by many because it is less sensitizing
Lightens hyperpigmentation (discoloration)
Brightens skin
Smooths texture
Exfoliates tired, dull skin cells
IGOG Skin Care Products that contain Lactic Acid:
No. 20 Organic Gravity Defying Moisturizer
No. 22 Creamy Smoothing Moisturizer
Kojic Acid is a pigment fighting wonder that is derived from fermented rice and Japanese Reishi mushrooms. Kojic Acid works to inhibit the production of melanin in your skin. Melanin is the substance that gives your skin its dark color when exposed to sun, inflammation (acne) or hormonal changes (melasma pregnancy mask). The more melanin you produce, the darker your skin becomes. If you have unwanted dark spots (hyperpigmentation) including Kojic Acid in your skin care routine can help even-out your skin’s color.
IGOG Skin Care Products that contain Kojic Acid include:
No. 10 Organic Illuminating Serum
No. 19 Organic Brightening Moisturizer
Retinoic Acid (RA) is a derivative of Vitamin A. RA has proven its worth in anti-aging skin care circles in both prescription form (Tretinoin, Retin-A, Renova, Refissa) and in cosmetic and OTC preparations (Retinol). Non-prescription retinol is tolerated by skin better than prescription retinoids, which tend to come with irritating side effects. There is a wealth of research to back up retinol’s anti-aging benefits.
Retinoic Acid (RA) adds structure and thickness the skin to fill in fine lines and wrinkles
RA brightens the skin by exfoliating dull, tired surface cells
Encourages healthy cell function
Functions as an antioxidant which limits free-radical damage
Fights hyperpigmentation (discoloration)
Improves pore function which helps enlarged, clogged pores purge their dead skin cell lining, returning pores to their genetically-determined size
All forms of vitamin A break down and deteriorate when repeatedly exposed to air and light. Buy retinol products in opaque, airless dispensing bottles like those that we use at IGOG Skin Care!
If you are just starting to use a retinol treatment, start slowly, allowing your skin to get used to this potent ingredient.
IGOG products that contain Retinol:
No. 4 Exfoliating Mini-Peel Pads
No. 9 Organic Retinol Serum
No. 20 Organic Gravity Defying Moisturizer
Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) that is derived from acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). Like AHAs, BHAs act as an exfoliant. The shedding of dead skin cells allows fresh cells to rise to the skin’s surface. BHAs are a lipid (oil) soluble molecule allowing penetration into pores that contain sebum (oil), helping to exfoliate the pore itself. This makes BHAs particularly useful to oily, acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid is usually well tolerated. This BHA inhibits inflammation, and is less likely to make users sensitive to the sun than Glycolic Acid. Those sensitive to aspirin should consult their physician before topical use.
Willow Bark Extract is a source of natural BHA, polyphenols and flavonoids. Willow Bark Extract may contribute effects similar to those seen from synthetic salicylic and can be used in organic formulations. Salicylic acid:
Is a keratolytic = Exfoliant
Is anti-inflammatory
Inhibits the formation of comedo (acne)
Restricts the growth of bacteria
Is capable of penetrating and breaking down sebum plugs (blackheads) opening/clearing clogged pores
Shrinks and tightens pores
Reduces appearance of wrinkles
Smooths skin
Helps to manage Keratosis Pilaris (KP) which shows up as rough bumps of dry skin on arms, thighs buttocks and cheeks
Reduces hyperpigmentation (discoloration)
Over-the-counter limits are set at 2% - 3% for topical preparations
pH of 3 or 4 will bring maximum benefits
IGOG Skin Care Products that contain Salicylic Acid:
No. 4 Exfoliating Mini-Peel Pads
No. 10 Organic Illuminating Serum
No. 26 Organic Multi-Acid Mask (coming soon)
Precautions:
If you use an acid in your skin care routine, you must be diligent in use of an effective sun block! Acids can make your skin more vulnerable to the sun’s rays, even days after you stop using them. Sun damage and burns can occur if you are not properly protected. Wear your sunblock and re-apply regularly!
Both AHAs and BHAs can cause irritation including redness, burning, flaking or itching if used in high concentrations with a low pH. It is best to do a test patch over a small area to make sure your skin can tolerate skin care acids. Ramp up usage starting with use a few times per week and increase as tolerated.
Consult your doctor before using AHA/BHA containing products if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
Darker skinned individuals may be at risk for scarring and loss of pigment (hypopigmentation) when using strong-level acids.
Consult a skin care professional to determine if Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids are appropriate for you.

Have you seen any Korean women or even men face to face? Have you ever ask yourself how nice it would be having a clear white and bright skin? I have. A LOT OF TIMES. Their ‘I woke up like this slash no-make up look’ is something I’ve been wishing and praying to get one day. They have like 10-12 skin care routine. OMG!
A part of their routine is ‘essence’. Essence is in liquid, torn between serum and face cream. It has clear liquid-like texture. It’s kinda sticky too but not too much. It has highly concentrated formulas which is packed of nutrients and moisture for the skin and since it is in liquid form it can be easily absorbed by the skin.
Then I came across this essence from Benton, it’s called, Snail Bee High Content Essence. I’ve heard and read too many positive reviews about this product. Although there are still reviews saying it didn’t work out for them or their problem worsened because of this, I still felt excited to see if it will work for me. I really high hopes for this product. I’m oily to combination skin type and I’m pimple prone. I have pimple scars and marks, there are parts around my under eye, cheek and nose that are reddish, and my pimples tend to darken after it dries and heals. Yeah, it heals but it leaves its spot. It’s been my insecurity for years now and I really hate it. Because of this, I told myself to never stop trying products until I found the savior for my skin.
Photo not mine, just to show you the boxing
Knowing that Koreans have such nice, white and clear skin, I joined the hype for this very product. But before that, I did my research on its 2 main ingredients – snail slime and bee venom. At first, I was like, what? Is it even possible for these two work? Setting aside my so-called suspicions, I searched for online shops that sells this.
Snail Mucin: Snail mucin firms and restores skin by replenishing moisture and supporting cell regeneration (which helps fade acne scars, smooth uneven complexions and reduce hyperpigmentation)
Bee Venom: Breaks down cell membranes, which tricks your body into thinking it’s under attack. It responds by increasing circulation, triggering the production of collagen and even relaxing facial muscles. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, which is why some use bee venom as a natural alternative to Botox.
Now, who wouldn’t feel tempted with these benefits?
Thanks to my researching skills, I found tons of Instagram online shops that are based in my country. Their items are directly imported from South Korea.
What is this? “Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence” is for all types of skin including sensitive and troubled skin types. This product contains 90% snail extract and bee venom instead of water. Powerful ingredients such as snail mucin and bee venom help to heal acne, fade acne scars, brighten skin tone, and maintain hydration throughout the day. Snail mucin supports natural cell regeneration and replenishes moisture to increase firmness, and bee venom has natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. The gel-like essence is also fragrance free! Best recommended for those with sensitive and troubled skin. (description from amazon)
Where did I bought it? Instagram @beautynseoul_ph
Price? ₱520.00 (or $10.67) I know right? So cheap!!❤
Contains: 150 mL of essence
Packaging: The essence is packaged in dark matte plastic bottle. It has pump, perfect for hygiene-conscious. The bottle itself looks expensive and classy. I also like the fact that it is travel-size.
Clear gel-like watery consistency
How it works? I apply this every evening before I sleep. What I do is I wash my face with facial foam, toner then wait for a minutes for the toner to get absorbed and then 2 pumps of the essence for my face. Spread lightly on skin and dab it with my fingers for better product absorption. I do this every night for more than 2 weeks now to test if my skin reacts negatively or not.
Results:
√ Reduces redness around my cheek and nose.
√ Dries them out overnight.
× fade acne scars
× brightens skin tone
I had mild breakouts while using this. I got pimples on my eyebrows and on my cupid’s bow but the essence dries them out.
Personal Verdict:
Will I buy again? No. Because of the mild breakouts and it didn’t fade my pimple marks and spots, the very reason I bought this product. I don’t mind the breakouts, but it didn’t lighten my spots and never healed my pimples. Drying them out doesn’t mean they are healed. It didn’t brighten/lighten my skin tone. This is not for me.
If you think 2.5 weeks isn’t enough as a trail period, please do tell me and I will do it again. But I think its enough, what do you think?
PS: This is my personal experience with this product. Effects may vary on every person. Just because it didn’t work for me, it doesn’t mean it won’t for you. You are free to give it a try, if it didn’t work discontinue.
Thanks all! I hope this is helpful!
RF Microneedling Is a Must-Know Treatment for Skin of Color:
Struggling with stubborn acne scars? You’ve likely heard that chemical exfoliation and lasers are your best friend. While that’s true for some people, if you have a darker complexion, relying on those methods can do more harm than good. That’s why radiofrequency microneedling is such a popular treatment these days. By combining two trusted methods, a single treatment is able to address multiple signs of complexion damage without causing more in the process.
What Is Radiofrequency Microneedling?
Let’s break it down, shall we? Microneedling is the use of teeny, tiny needles to create microaggressions in the skin that speed up wound healing, while radiofrequency is a type of high-intensity energy that’s able to penetrate the skin to lead to an improved complexion. When the two are combined, medical esthetician Tamila Deveny says that the cosmetic procedure, which uses “specially insulated needles that deliver high-intensity radio frequency energy into the targeted tissue once the needles have broken through the skin,” stimulates collagen and elastic production to boost new, healthy tissue in the skin, ultimately working to restore your complexion to its flawless, pre-scar appearance.
“In my opinion, it is one of the most effective treatments for anti-aging and to treat scars on the face or body,” she shares.
Benefits of Radiofrequency Microneedling:
•Improves acne or surgery scars (on the face and body)
•Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
•Reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation
•Reduces the appearance of stretch marks
•Helps with dull or uneven skin tone or texture
•Shrinks enlarged pores
•Helps with loose skin (face and body)
•Reduces cellulite
•Firms upper eyelid skin
•Smooths lines on the upper lip skin

The process of bleaching skin involves the use of substances, concoctions or physical treatments that result in lightening the color of the skin. The idea is to decrease the amount of melanin, a substance naturally found in the body that is responsible for the dark pigmentation of the skin. The market is saturated with numerous brands claiming the same thing so it’s necessary to select the product that is right for your needs.
Skincare tips of the day
What conditions do skin whitening products address?
Skin whitening can either be prescribed by a doctor resulting from certain medical conditions or in some cases, it can be purely cosmetic. Some conditions requiring whitening are as follows:
Dull skin due to overexposure to the sun
Dark spots – from acne, freckles, stress and/ or diet
Certain medical conditions
Dry and irritated skin
Chronic use of cosmetics causing blemishes
Acne scars
What are the possible side effects of skin whitening?
Due to the components used in the production of skin whitening products, there are several possible side effects that can occur. Experiencing a mild burning sensation, stinging, rashes, dryness and flaking are but a few of the possible risks even when using whitening products.
Is there a way to avoid these side effects?
Before heading to the counter to pay, here are some tips in choosing the best skin whitening cream. There are numerous products available on the market today and without the right knowledge, it’s not easy to choose the best product for your specific needs.
What’s your skin type?
Skin types range from normal, dry, oil or a combination thereof. There are some face whitening creams that use strong bleaching components that can cause drying, resulting in irritation. These components are recommended for oily skin types and not for dry or combination types.
Do I need to seek medical advice?
Prior to using any skin lightening creams, make sure to consult a doctor to avoid allergic reactions. Some of these products may contain inactive ingredients that can result in minor skin problems. Be sure to provide an accurate medical history, especially those related to skin conditions.
In order to avoid the risks associated with even the best skin bleaching cream, it is highly recommended to go for natural skin bleaching. This helps to avoid occurrences of allergic reactions and breakouts.
What results do you wish to achieve?
Overall, the main goal is to achieve a lighter complexion but some of the best skin whitening cream can also treat problems like the following:
Dark underarms, elbows and/ or knees
Birthmarks
Acne scars
Hyperpigmentation from keloids or scarring
What’s on the label?
When choosing a product, especially whitening cream for face, always make sure to check what is written on the label. Steer clear of products that contain ingredients such as steroids and mercury. These chemicals are toxic to the skin and can lead to very serious side effects. To get the right product, always be conscious of what’s ne the label.
Black and white bleaching cream for instance, is one of the brands available on the market today. It is very effective in lightening the skin color, resulting in an even skin tone. It can remove scars quickly and reduce the presence of freckles. Not only does it act as a whitening cream for face but also, the formulation makes it possible to use the product as a make-up base. It smoothens the skin, creating an even palate to work with when applying make-up. To achieve the best results from this skin whitening treatment, it is recommended to use it for about 2 to 3 weeks.
The active ingredient contained in this product is hydroquinone. It acts by reducing the level of melanin present in the skin resulting in a whiter complexion. The major risk in reduced melanin levels is that it can weaken the natural defense of the skin, leading to breakouts, irritation and other skin problems. But to address this, it is infused with vitamin C that enhances cell growth, resulting to supple and younger looking skin. In addition, it has powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals and slow down the signs of aging.
Never forget SPF!
Bleaching can result in extremely sensitive skin. This is because bleaching causes layers of the skin to “peel off” in order to produce an even skin tone. This causes the deeper layers of the skin to be exposed to the harsh environment, hence making it prone to freckles, sun spots, rashes and sunburn. The latter two can be extremely painful, especially if facial bleaching is involved.
To prevent these nasty conditions, always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harsh elements. This will keep your skin tone even for a longer period of time.
Skin bleaching creams
Knowing the right product for your skin is essential in preventing the risks associated with whitening. Being informed on what your skin needs will give you a good idea on how to do it safely. When in doubt, always seek medical advice before buying a product. That way, you do not waste time, money and resources on any product. Bleaching skin can come with minimal risk when you know how to select the right products.

Clio had some hypertrophic scars removed from her arm and one from her chest. One of the stitches broke, so she's not too impressed with the place that did the work. The scars ended up going from white hypertrophic scars to red semi-hyperpigmented non-hypertrophic scars. Basically, when all was said and done, Clio paid $200 and made 3 trips to Maryland... Only to be made to look kind of worse, while everyone else made money off of her. This just feels so typical of the majority of medical experiences. About 7 months later, Clio started using the 4% hydroquinone lotion (that she was using on her legs) on the hyperpigmentation to try to whiten the arm scars. We'll see if I can ever get them looking like they did before their original scarring. Who knows...

This Mourning Dove, with a dark breast and left side has been appearing in my yard for the last two weeks. The White-crowned Sparrow was sighted 20 miles south of my house, as was the Cinnamon Teal. The teal is very mottled, suggesting a partially leucistic bird. I'm not sure how to explain the sparrow. Any thoughts?

Clio received her simulation videos while on the bus ride back to Virginia! Dr. Bart took some before pictures, used a photo editing program to approximate the changes he'd be making, and then created simulation videos for front and side views. The results ended up being very much like the simulation video.
Transition Progress at this point: On hormones since 8/1 (7 months); injections since 12/22 (2 months) [13 so far]. Full-time female since 9/15 (5.5 months). Plastic surgery consults continuing (5 for FFS, 3 for lipo). Have seen endo/primary therapist 5X, and secondary therapists 9X. Weight down to 143lbs (54 down from 197). Hair removal includes 32 electrolysis treatments totaling 25 hours; 30 laser hair removal sessions (51 area treatments: 16/15/13/12/8 mouth/goatee/face/neck/armpits, 7 legs/chest, 6 ears/Brazilian); and bi-weekly at-home IPL on arms since 6/17 (8.5 months). Latisse for eyelash lengthening since 4/17 (10.5 months). 2 dental implants, and prep work for Zoom Whitening For Life. Pierced ears. Dyed/layered hair (no haircuts for 3yrs--since 1/2015). Twice daily hydroquinone treatment on leg hyperpigmentation since 2/14 (2 weeks), and it's starting to peel red now (looks awful). Female wardrobe replacement wasup to 656 items. BACKSTORY: I booked an FFS (Facial Feminization Surgery) consultation with Dr. Bart Van Der Ven of 2Pass Clinic (Belgium). I'm really glad I went, because this was the surgeon I ultimately chose to do the surgery on September 4th, 2018. Skype consults are a thing, but there's no substitute for sitting there next to a surgeon, as he holds a metal ruler to parts of your face. Or his photography equipment for the "before" pictures. I received my simulation videos on the bus back to Virginia!
THE PLAN WAS A BIT CRAZY, THOUGH: We go to the club, then when it close at 3AM, we go home, and Clio then drives to DC to get on a bus to New York, arriving around 9AM, then finding her way to the consultation by 11AM, and back to the bus by 2PM, and back home by 7PM. And then straight to bed until the next day.
TRIP IN SUMMARY:
Failed repeatedly to drive into the Union Station parking garage, or any parking garage. End result: panic, hastily chosen street parking, and 4:35AM running toward Union Station dark and alone in DC .. I barely had water for the trip cause I used it all to run
The Megabus wifi sucked, but it was enough to keep up with things. It was that other non-megabus-bus that I took back, that had the broken wifi that didn't work.
I got there with time to spare - completed my consultation before it was scheduled to start - and had to kill like 90+ minutes before I left, as well. So the schedule was tight, but fine. I saw the empty slots in his booking and knew there'd be nobody before me (unless they booked after I did), so I knew if I showed up early I'd probably earn some extra wiggle room
Uber ended up costing more and taking longer than a taxi, because they charge you if you don't get picked up because you can't see the fucking car even tho the app is showing it go down the street right there and you are reading every license plate and the fucker just isn't there when the app says he's there. $5 each time. ... so it was like $9 Uber $12 taxi but I paid like $19 Uber because it took 3 Ubers for them to pick me up... And I had to fuck around for like 15 minutes ... Time for credit card disputes.
But the Uber BACK to the bus went well
IT WAS A TOUGH TRIP, but I did not keel over, and really was only miserable the last 2 hrs of the last bus trip. Though I WAS under-dressed with a light jacket and no hat/scarf, I don't deal with cold well, and I'm not from New York, so there were definitely a lot of moments where everyone in NYC was acting like a normal person, and I was jogging in place like a crazy person, out of breath, just trying to stay warm. At one point I ducked into the subway and hung out in a pissy area near a unconscious homeless dude because he knew what the fuck was up about avoiding this cold. But eventually I had to go into gift shops because the piss smell of NYC's subways is pretty ubiquitous and overwhelming
Dr. Bart Van Der Ven of 2pass Clinic ( www.2pass.eu ) saw me. He said I only need a Type 1 forehead reconstruction... Though if it ended up needing to be a Type 3, he'd only charge me for Type 1 [for reference: facialfeminization.surgery/index.php/forehead/ ]
But basically, he said I only need a Type 1 forehead reconstruction, not Type 3, because of where my brow bossing is
He measured my nose-to-lips and said I didn't need a lip lift. Dr. Bart simply rattles numbers off from his head, holds a ruler up.. I fell within female numbers anyway for the lip-to-nose distance. Something I've become increasingly LESS dysphoric of lately, as I look at more and more women through the eyes of one learning gendered skull structure knowledge.
He didn't want to do the cheek implants, just nasolabial ones. He said 4 implants has more infection chance than 2. Tho taking them out is rote and can be done locally. So why NOT get 4? Hmmm. [But the estimate came with cheek implants, and I ended up getting small ones, so hey! :)]
Sadly informed that something something lower orbital rim too far back compared to most people, not "abnormal" but uncommon means that something something something maybe that's why he only wanted the 2 implants [uh oh -- I got all 4 implants though. Sure wish I remember what that something something was]
He wasn't into wanting to do as aggressive of a jaw shave as I seemed to want, and ultimately it really wasn't that aggressive, and I wonder if I should have insisted on more, though I'm pretty happy with the results, and at the time of posting this (November 2018), swelling still hasn't gone down yet, to make a final judgment on just how happy I am with things. I'm fairly happy with the results so far. :)
After the consultation, Clio had to kill some time in New York. About 2-3hrs hanging around the bus stop area, wherever this is. It was cold. She looked at the chrome poop in the middle of the square, ate tacos, drank margaritas, and toured the stupid gift shops full of stupid touristy stuff. (Bought one shotglass for $3.)

And I had to fuck around for like 15 minutes ... Time for credit card disputes.
But the Uber BACK to the bus went well
IT WAS A TOUGH TRIP, but I did not keel over, andreally was only miserable the last 2 hrs of the last bus trip.
Dr. Bart Van Der Ven of 2pass Clinic( www.2pass.eu ) saw me.
Clio made a great tin that captures her personality succinctly: Full of cartoons, and sloppily glued together.

BACKSTORY: Each month, Melissa has a craft night. This night was making travel altar tins. You take an Altoids box and decorate it, and then you have a portable altar to take with you.
Clio found this tote bag at the thrift store. She felt that it represented femininity (the female symbol, the hearts, and even the feline theme) as well as rebellion against constraints ("don't tell me what to do!"), which is a good combination for representing her personality. Carolyn ended up uses this tote to hold her hair tinsel supplies.
And that belt! $4 at Goodwill. Had to make them climb up and pull it off a mannequin.

Still trying to kill 2-3hrs time, without leaving the bus stop area, Clio had no choice but to eat and drink. Clio ate 3 exotic tacos: ahi tuna, seared tofu, and a vegan one. They were all good. Even the vegan one. Clio had an apple-garlic-ginger martini that was SUPER spicy - and a turmeric-pineapple martini that wasn't spicy enough, but was interesting to sample. Tourist trap!!

It was that other non-megabus-bus that I took back, that had the broken wifi thatdidn't work.
After the consultation, Clio had to kill some time in New York. About 2-3hrs hanging around the bus stop area, wherever this is. It was cold.

Transition Progress at this point: On hormones since 8/1 (7 months); injections since 12/22 (2 months) [13 so far]. Full-time female since 9/15 (5.5 months). Publicly out as trans since 10/11 (4.5 months). Legally female since 12/21 (2.5 months). 2 group speech therapy classes taken at GW Speech Clinic since 2/22. Total transition expenditures now over $17,400 at this point.

At one point I ducked into the subway and hung out in a pissy area near a unconscious homeless dude because he knew what the fuck was up about avoiding this cold. But eventually I had to go into gift shops because the piss smell of NYC's subways is pretty ubiquitous and overwhelming

But the Uber BACK to the bus went well
IT WAS A TOUGH TRIP, but I did not keelover, and really was only miserable the last 2 hrs of the last bus trip.
Carolyn posted on Facebook about a conversation between her brain and her bladder because her co-worker mentioned that she had to run to the ladies room. This video is Clio's response to that post. Basically complaining about making HER need to pee.
Transition Progress at this point: On hormones since 8/1 (7 months); injections since 12/22 (2 months) [14 so far]. Full-time female since 9/15 (5.5 months).

Clio looking cute!
BACKSTORY: We had a gift card for Macaroni Grill (we usually have one every year, and have gone for over a decade). This year was the most god-awful experience of our lives! No wonder Macaroni Grill is going out of business. But we have to wonder if it was transgender & LGBT discrimination, because not only were we never treated like that at that same Macaroni Grill, but we saw the waiter treat others better.
I'm not that picky. I get a taco or two at Taco Bell almost every day I go out, and am very pleased with that experience. When I go out, I often go to buffets, because I don't mind what food I eat, as long as it's not completely messed up.
But taking my wife to Macaroni Grill on Valentine's Day was the absolute worst "romantic" restaurant trip of my entire life. I am frankly surprised at how much text I need to write just to explain everything that happened.
Note that the restaurant was NOT packed. We go there almost every Valentine's Day, for 10+ years. Last year it was a 45 minute wait and totally packed. This year it was a 5 minute wait, and there were empty tables in the restaurant. It was literally the least packed we've ever seen it on Valentine's Day. There are no "busy" excuses for this treatment
1) We didn't notice at the time, but going back: The first way we were treated differently was that the waiter didn't write his name on our placemat. Did he intend to give us bad service because we are visibly LGBT? Because he wrote it for the people next to us, on both sides. Just not for us. It seemed like he was so unwilling to even get near us, that he wouldn't approach us, write his name on the placemat, or visit our table -- ***even when visiting the one next to us repeatedly***, or give us good service.
2) Immediately he puts the olive oil and pepper on the saucer for the bread. This is a fun Macaroni Grill theatric that makes the customer feel good... Unless the saucer full of olive oil is merely pointing out how you have no bread for 20 minutes. Again, never in our life. Other people have bread. We don't.
Later, I explicitly ask for bread, because it's absolutely clear that it's NOT going to come, because this guy will serve the tables on both sides of us, but not us. It still doesn't come. Bread only finally arrives with our appetizer. Again: Never in our lives.
3) And then, guess what? The bread was too salty to eat! First time in 40 years that I have ever disliked restaurant bread. Later, when the waiter stopped coming to our table, we managed to ask *the cook* for more bread. It, too, was too salty to not eat. No amount of dipping it or mixing it with other ingredients made it edible. The bread I get from the dollar store is better. Why is Macaroni Grill so awful to us today?
4) The second thing the waiter actually does is ask us for a drink. Immediately. We don't know our drink order yet, but later, when we order everything at once, we do order ONE drink. But it doesn't come with the bread. It doesn't come with the appetizers. It doesn't even come with the entree! Later, while we are eating, the drink finally shows up. We had forgotten about it by that time. Who the hell serves drinks, appetizers, and an entree at the same time?
5) But at least we had water, right? Well, sort of. We asked for water with lemon. It took awhile -- an annoying amount of time if you have dysphagia -- but the finally water came. Most restaurants give you water without asking, or allow you access to a tap. We were left thirsty. So thirst. And when it finally came, NO LEMONS!
We asked for lemons. It took awhile, but finally he came back and said, "We're out of lemons, so I had to give you limes". I am unsure what to do, so I squeeze some of the lime juice in my water to try it out. It's awful. I can't drink it.
Meanwhile, I see lemons come out with water orders just 2 tables away. My drink (a mule) that comes later has a lemon in it--because the drink comes like that automatically. It is clearly our server who won't ask for stuff for us -- even while giving the same stuff to adjoining tables! My salmon that came with lemon on it! Why is this bigoted server telling us the restaurant doesn't have lemons? Macaroni Grill is most definitely NOT out of lemons. Why would he lie to us? There's a bar. Bars have lemon wedges for drinks. The restaurant is NOT out of lemon wedges.
But for the majority of the time I was there, I couldn't even sip my water, because it turns out lime water is awful. Who drinks that? Not me. I didn't know. I tried, and that was a mistake. And since our alcohol drink never came until the entree, I literally had nothing to drink that didn't taste awful. And getting water refill was nigh impossible. And of course no bread. Nothing enjoyable whatsoever - but the people 2 tables away got their water with lemon. EVERYONE who wasn't LGBT did.
6) Eventually, when the waiter disappeared, we actually had to go and ask THE COOK for lemons, and he brought them out and apologized. This was after the entree came. It's like the waiter was unwilling to do his job. Why is the cook bringing us our food and serving us? Where is our server? We were ALSO out of water at that point, and needed any kind of liquid to drink. I am prone to choking because I have dysphagia. Last time I had a choking episode, I had to grab the drink of a stranger off their table in an emergency. This is the kind of thing that happens when human beings are denied water, and have no way to get it.
7) We ordered the calamari appetizer. The menu says it comes with 2 sauces. A pepper sauce and a citrus aoli. We got the pepper sauce, but the other stuff? It was a red, thick mixture that was very obviously mostly spicy Sri Racha sauce. My girlfriend doesn't like spicy stuff as much as me. That's why we didn't order something spicy. That's why we use the menu to decide whatto order. But what good is the menu, if the items on it aren't what it says they are? We needed at least one non-spicy dipping sauce.
8) By this point, the waiter had disappeared. He did not come around. Most restaurants check up on you to see if you are okay. They often do it TOO much. This guy? Despite the fact that we very obviously were not getting what we wanted, and had to ask for very basic things like bread and water -- he still wouldn't show up. Twice in a row, after minutes of being gone, he came and SERVED THE TABLE NEXT TO US, BUT KEPT HIS BACK TO US, THEN DISAPPEARED to the back again without even giving us an opportunity for service. Every time this happened, we needed something, and couldn't get it.
9) The salmon finally came. It was not even brought by our server (named Labrim), it was brought by the cook! (Who we had to ask for water, lemons, and more bread. Most of the food brought to our table WAS NOT BROUGHT by our actual server!)
It was the absolute worst salmon I've ever eaten in my life. It was so burned that each and every bite was a chore to get down. I woke up at 4AM nauseated, which is an unusual thing for me. We even tried cutting up the salmon and putting it inside our shrimp alfredo noodles, to mask the burning taste. It was impossible to mask. We have now messed up: water, bread, lemons, calamari dipping sauce, and salmon. Incredible.
10) At this point, we're done with our food, and we just want the dessert cake & ice cream, and a check. But he's nowhere to be found. For a good 5 minutes, we're just sitting there, unhappy with the experience, wanting to at least have a good piece of cake and ice cream, and leave. But the pause here is one of the longest service pauses during this entire visit.
During this time, 2 tables down, another couple was extremely angry at Labrim's service, and got up to leave. So at least it wasn't JUST us having a bad time, even if they actually got lemons & drinks.Someone, either Labrim or a manager, intervened and convinced them to sit back down and have their meal.
The couple 1 table down? They ALSO were extremely unhappy with Labrim, and were complaining about the service a lot of the time. For example, they got the merchant receipt for their credit card, so there was no place for them to sign it, and they had to ask for the correct receipt. That's never happened in my life, but again, now at least THREE tables were having a bad time, so at least there was some incompetence mixed in with the malevolence. We just seemed to be getting the worst of it, and it felt like discrimination to be treated so differently the first year we were visibly LGBT.
11) It's finally time for dessert. Does he bring it? No! He brings us to go containers, and says, "You wanted the cheesecake, right?"
Literally, when we ordered the food, we gave him the complete order. I wrote it down on my placemat. I pointed at the words as I ordered them to him. He acted as if he was writing down the words I was saying and pointing at. His job is to take the order. He couldn't even do that! I never said cheesecake! WTF?! Not only was our dessert not here, but he didn't even know what we ordered! Just what was Labrim doing?!?!?!
12) So we tell him we wanted the chocolate cake & ice cream. It seems to take awhile, but it finally comes. HE THEN TAKES ALL OUR SILVERWARE! We manage to snag one fork, but how are we supposed to share this item between the two of us? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, LABRIM?
He comes back in a couple minutes to help the table next to us, but in typical fashion, keeps his back to us and doesn't offer any help. As he walks away, we have to raise our voice and ask for another fork. I don't think it ever came.
13) And the "cake" and "ice cream"? It's not a cake, it's some Costco store bought chocolate muffin, with a cup of chocolate drizzle next to it. And the "ice cream"? Literally one fork full of ice cream. Granted, it tasted good - but this is your "$45 Valentine's Day Special For Couples", so you are literally advertising and serving a valentine's day ice cream dessert to couples with ONE FORK that has ONE FORKFUL of ice cream. So yes. You found a way to make ice cream and cake disappointing, Macaroni Grill.
14) Labrim then asked us if the food was good, and we said, "No, it wasn't", and told him we didn't like the bread, water, salmon, or cake. He said he would get the manager to do something about it. Minutes later, a check came. No manager. No manager ever came. Just another lie.
15) Finally, it came time to pay. We don't trust him to ring up our money right, so we decide to use our $50 gift card, and pay the $5.14 balance in cash. I went off to change my $10 into two $5s, and my wife went off to change her $5 into five $1s. I approached the bartender, waited for eye contact, and asked, "Can I get two 5s for a 10?" He said, "Wait a minute", then "How are you?" {I'm sorry, do I need to have a conversation to ask for change? It seemed like he was chiding me for being short with him and not having a conversation. I'm not here to talk with you, guy. I'm here to pay you for your bad food}. The bartender then turned his back to me. He messed around with the register for an unacceptably long time, completely ignoring me. Obviously he decided NOT to make the change I needed made -- or even to tell me. This, too, is a treatment I've never experienced in my life. As I slowly moved away -- because I'm not going to sit there like an idiot holding a $10 bill out for minutes at a time -- I went to the hostess. She checks HER OWN POCKETS and somehow has two $5 bills, and makes change for me.
My wife fared no better. She asked someone for five $1s for her $5. Multiple people told her they couldn't do it. She was finally told "only the bartender" can do this. She goes to thebar. Nobody is there. She looks around. Nobody to be found. This restaurant is full of aholes who won't do their job.
Finally, someone goes into the bar and starts doing stuff. She asks them if they can make change. "I'm not the bartender", the person tending the bar said, refusing to make her change. WHAT IS THIS PLACE?
We almost left the restaurant with a $5 shortchanging -- but then Carolyn ran into a random employee, who, also, had to get the money out of his personal money from his own pocket.
IN SUMMARY: You messed up in about 15 different ways, messing up: water, lemon, salmon, dipping sauce, cake, ice cream, properly keeping our order, making change... even the unhappiness of the people around us was a bring-down. This restaurant is not being managed properly, and Labrim is the 2nd worst server I've had in my entire lifetime.
I wish I'd had change, because the 85 cent tip Labrim gotwas an *incredible* overtip. It should have been a single penny. Frankly, I should be filing a credit card dispute for the cost of this meal... but we paid with a pre-paid gift card bought 2 years ago, so we take solace in knowing that no 2018 income went to Macaroni Grill for this awful 2018 visit.
Our annual almost-20-year tradition [based on our parents giving us gift cards every Christmas] is now over. We will not be returning to Macaroni Grill. Not on Valentine's Day. Not ever. The gift cards are apparently valid at several other restaurants... so we'll be going to one of those, from now on.
And I can't help but think some of this is because I am visibly transgender, because of the way he would repeatedly approach the table next to us (a straight couple), but not us. I was not visibly transgender a year ago, and was not treated like this during previous visits to Macaroni Grill. It just seems like that was a component, because we definitely got it the worst of everyone there.
