Visualization of my permutation series. Title is permutation 046 Sculpture @monochromeandminimal by project:pietern

The architecture of Denver during the 1960s was nothing short of stunning. I.M. Pei gave the city a Hyperbolic Paraboloid at the main entrance to a new May D&F department store, downtown. Charles Deaton gave us a futuristic bank in Englewood and a sculptured house on Genesee Mountain. That house is best known as the "Sleeper" house for its appearance in the Woody Allen film. Fans of that film may recognize the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservancy seen in this shot. It had an all-too brief cameo in the movie along with a futuristic Catholic church that was used as another background..

Architects Victor Hornbein and Edward D. White came up with this inspired design in 1964. The interlaced concrete arches are a suitable tribute to benefactor Claude Boettcher who made his fortune in the concrete business. The conservancy opened in 1966 and just 7 years later, in 1973, the building was granted Denver Landmark status. The building is a great place to go for an affordable vacation in the dead of Winter, featuring more than 2300 species of tropical plants.

The Bentley and Delahaye designs are also inspired with great swooping curves, like the conservancy building. Somewhat less inspired are those fender skirts on the front wheels. We imagine, neither car had a very good turning radius. We also imagine, we could get used to that.

Based on comments made the last time I posted a pic of this place, I think this was a North Carolina State University School of Design student project. It's one room, with a bathroom attached. Initially used as an office at a used car lot, it's been sitting here since at least 2007.

Likely inspired by Eduardo Catalano, who taught at NCSU and lived in a house he designed with a hyperbolic paraboloid roof.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, known familiarly as St. Mary's Cathedral, in San Francisco has become a landmark that annually draws thousands of people to this sacred structure, which combines the rich traditions of the Catholic faith with modern technology.

Completed in 1970, the cathedral's striking design flows from the geometric principle of the hyperbolic paraboloid, in which the structure curves upward in graceful lines from the four comers meeting in a cross. Measuring 255 feet square, the cathedral soars to 190 feet high and is crowned with a 55 foot golden cross.

Super cool building in Manhattan designed by Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group. And no, it's not a pyramid or a tetrahedron, it's a "hyperbolic paraboloid".

Most likely, this will find its way to a five part series, but I am waiting for one more exterior composition to materialize.

I decided on this composition, as I wanted to show how a slight shift in position can change the perspective. Very little movement from the first in this series.

The Hypar is usually folded starting from a complete grid, but precreasing it cleanly is rather straightforward. Start by precreasing both diagonals of the square. Then, fold creases parallel to the sides of the square at half the distance between the edge and the square’s center, creasing only the segment which lies between the diagonals. Repeat on each side. Then, make the creases denser by folding halfway between the crease from previous step and the edge and between it and the center. Continue to get as fine a division as needed (already a division into 32nds results in a pretty smooth hypar).

See origami.kosmulski.org/models/hypar-clean for more pictures since this design is so elegant each view is interesting in its own way.

Explication - Exterior

I made this version just minutes before, and about 25-50ft back from my last image. Overall, this image is actually more true to the architectural details, yet it in no way actually captures the true lines and shapes. Hopefully my next outing will produce the image I have pre-visualized for the final set.

Marcel Breuer was one of the leading practioners of Brutalism and in 1966 he designed the church of St. Francis de Sales in Muskegon, Michigan. The building features a massive amount of concrete, a minimal amount of windows, and a sweeping hyperbolic paraboloid facade. In the interveening 50 years an additon to the front of the building has lessened the sweeping impact of the original building, but the structure remains an interesting piece of architecture in themiddle of small town America.

A hyperbolic paraboloid made from Archimedean spirals. Doesn't much look it, but it's an action model. You hold it with both hands and then start rotating them in opposite directions. Trippy.

Crease pattern for the easily amused.
