We saw SOOO many Hyenas - and every single one looking healthy, happy, well-fed! I had never seen these Canids in such good nick before and I was so pleased.

Still one of the most exciting photography moments of my life...KRUGER NP 2009

Hyenas photographed with BeetleCam in Liuwa Plain, Zambia. This was a single 22-second exposure. I used a set of Camtraptions Wireless Triggers to fire an off-camera flash at the start of the exposure.

what these buddies are up to ...?

Son de hábitos principalmente nocturnos y crepusculares.

Se refugian en orificios naturales entre rocas u otros lugares similares, entre los matorrales o en galerías abandonadas de cerdos hormigueros que frecuentemente agrandan ellas mismas.

My mother always hated Hyenas. Said they were evil!

I think they just got a bum rap. : )

Hyena coming in to get his share! Manyeleti Reserve in Eastern Cape in South Africa.

When we on our way out of Kruger Park, we saw some people stopped on the road. As most people in the park do, we stopped to ask what they had seen. They thought they had seen wild dogs sleeping but by the time we found them through the bush we realized that it was a group of napping hyenas. When we pulled up close, this one that was sleeping on its back, woke up and looked up at me.

When we stayed in Motswari Private Game Reserve we saw many hyenas and were able to visit a den where the mother brought her babies out to play. .

Hungry Hyena.

It was a dry, hot afternoon on the Kalahari plains. The Spotted Hyena was alone and hungry. The light, dust, and tension among the other animals, added to the mood of this scene. This moment will remain etched in my mind.

Hope you will enjoy this photo.

At Klein Namutoni drinking hole in Etosha the sun rises directly opposite the parking area. If one drives there as soon as the camp gates open one my be fortunate enought to find one of the resident Spotted Hyenas (Crocuta crocuta )enjoying a drink in the golden light of the rising sun.

Despite what Simba would have you believe, spotted hyenas don’t just scavenge for lion leftovers. Spotted hyenas hunt and kill in packs. Ninety-five percent of what a hyena eats comes from hunting. A group of hyenas can devour an entire zebra, leaving no leftovers—not even the bones—in under half an hour. However, this feeding frenzy comes at a cost; hyenas rip, claw, and fight with one another over the remains of their meal.

We called in at the Hyena den yesterday morning and the mother hyena seemed to call out the babies, just so we could see them. It was wonderful to watch them interact and see the little puppy suckling.

Good morning all,

The sworn enemy of the lion, they may be "cousins", but lions and hyenas hate each other. It must be said that these animals feed on the same preys and occupy the same territory. Thus, lions will not hesitate to kill an isolated hyena, and vice versa.

Good day friends :)

One of the advantages of having a floodlit waterhole that you can see whilst eating dinner on the veranda, is that you can see when anything interesting turns up.

I spotted the Hyena half way through my main course and ran the 200-300m down to the hide to fire off a couple of shots.

In hindsight I should probably have spent some time setting up my camera, so these first shots could have been better but I'm reasonably happy with what I got.

As I have been working thru my photos from our recent Africa trip, I've been posting in essentially chronological order. Which means that so far, there has been a preponderance of night hide shots.

If I was smart I would mix it up with later shots of lions, cheetahs, buffalo etc. My wife would say I am too rigid to do this (actually she uses another four letter word starting with "A".). I prefer to think of myself as organized and methodical. :)

In any case, this is the last hide shot I will post. Not the best of the shots I have shared, but I felt fortunate to see this guy. I was not familiar with Striped Hyenas, and certainly had never seen one. Twice, one (probably this same guy) approached the hide but would not come up. But finally the last night he did.

From what I've read, they are very much nocturnal and rarely if ever seen during the day.

They have a large range, over eastern and northern Africa and into the middle east and over to India. But outside of eastern Africa, the populations are quite fragmented and their numbers appear to be decreasing. They are listed at Near Threatened unfortunately.

Es la familia menos numerosa en su orden (formada por cuatro especies), y una de las más pequeñas dentro de los mamíferos. A pesar de su baja diversidad, las hienas son únicas y constituyen un componente vital para los ecosistemas de África.

I never really liked Hyenas before seeing them interact with each other at the den in Motswari Private Game Reserve. The interaction between the mothers and babies was lovely to see.

The Spotted, also sometimes called the Laughing Hyena, is found in sub-Saharan Africa, living in drier environments such as savanna, bush veld and desert.

These powerfully built animals are the second largest four-legged hunters in Africa – next to their mortal enemies – lions. They are often known as scavengers, eating the leftovers of other predators but they are actually extremely intelligent and successful pack hunters, taking down various plains game. Being omnivores, they will also eat birds, lizards, snakes, insects and plants.

The jaws of the spotted hyena are said to be the strongest in the entire animal kingdom and are capable of crushing and grinding even the largest of bones.

Spotted Hyena are quite interesting animals. They are ruled by the alpha female and females are clearly the dominant sex. They even sport a nonfunctional penis. I’d love to know the evolutionary history of that! They are always trying to carry off a piece from a kill to have to themselves but aren’t as aggressive as lions about it. In this case after a brief tug of war, the carcass parted, and each got their own piece. (Spotted Hyena - Crocuta Crocuta) (Sony a1, 70-200mm @ 200m, f/4, 1/6400 second, ISO 1000)

This Hyena is watching a pack of Wild dogs. It's not my favourite animal but they were part of my trip.
