I didn't actually plan on ending up here the first night of my trip. My clutch ran out of hydraulic fluid on the way over at about 1:00 am on the way, and I was lucky to make it to Banff where I could purchase some the next morning. The far lake was beautiful though, and I was really happy to witness this sunrise, with a fresh frost. Thanks for looking! Chip
Miners used hydraulic sluicing to move whole mountainsides in their search for gold for about 10 years from the 1860s. Our province produced a lot of gold and helped build our city including the first university in NZ. When the gold dried up people moved on and or city was left with many Victorian buildings in stone. There are similar areas in Asturias, Spain where Romans dug for gold 2000 years ago so I don't expect this areas to change any time soon. Seen on a dawn walk. Have a good weekend.

I really appreciate them!
A Western-bagging trip in 1974 saw me searching for somewhere new for photography, and I ended up at Newbury - by way of the Midland Main Line to St Pancras, and a train from Paddington.
It was quite an investment at the time travelling down from Nottingham but happily I managed to both spot and snap a few diesel-hydraulics. Regretfully, that didn't include Warship 821 'Greyhound', which I saw at Reading on the outward journey.
In this shot 1055 'Western Advocate' is hustling over the fast lines at Newbury hauling train 1A69, the 8.40am Penzance - London Paddington express. The fine building in the background is, I believe, the Saint Nicholas CoE School.
Local photographer D.E. Canning, whose work frequently appeared in rail magazines back then, was one of the regular signalmen on duty here and I often wondered whether he was working that day.
For the record, diesel hydraulics seen on the trip: 821, 1013, 1022, 1030, 1034, 1054, 1055, 1064. Class 50s were already making their presence felt and very much in evidence on the West of England expresses. In the case of 1055, it's hard to believe she was just over 11 years old when this shot was taken, and would be withdrawn and cut-up within 2 years.

They're making a helluva racket on Richmond St. over the past few months, laying some sort of jumbo plumbing. They dig, lay pipe, put in temporary plates and asphalt, then return in a month to dig it up again and do some other kinda thing. I'm sure there's a method to the madness but when you're trying to listen or talk in a meeting, it can feel like giant sand worms are burrowing through the street - sometimes the whole house shakes! This gear was occupying our usual parking spot one morning.

A much-later-than-usual Job 206 provided me the chance to enjoy the Illinois Railnet, and nothing more, through Yorkville.

The 2nd visit of the year for Western Champion and the weather was ok. Here she is on the outskirts of Teignmouth passing by the old Chris Humphries boat yard alongside the River Teign.
She looked and sounded amazing, flashbacks to my train spotting days as a 10 year old when i would say such blasphemous things as " not another Western "
