Freshly emerged green collecting the rain in its own inimitable way. I'm always much more inclined to notice this in the spring when the new leaves are perfect and vigorous in their youth, and the droplets seem to serve as an appropriate adornment.
The Pyrrhuloxia (pronounced however your mouth decides in the moment) is the desert’s answer to a cardinal—same spiky crest, but with more attitude and less hydration.
I found this one perched on a rare leafy ocotillo, posing like he owned the place. With his candy-corn beak, dusty-red plumage, and permanent side-eye, he’s the bird version of a grumpy old-timer who’s seen things.
He’s tougher than his Northern cousin—built for heat, sand, and yelling at you from a bush for reasons known only to him. His song? Like a cardinal, but sharper, higher, and just a little bit judgmental.
Get the light right, and he glows like a desert ember.
He sings with a sting and glares like a monk—
A feathered grump with desert funk.

- Stigmas are adapted to trap pollen with hairs, flaps and other surfaces to increase their efficiency. Most stigmas are covered with a waxy, sticky substance. This wet substance allows stigmas to provide an important service by re-hydrating dry pollen to prepare the grains to enter the ovary and initiate the process of fertilization.-

Thirsty yearling moose. She was after the salt licks too. This heat wave is taking its toll on the animals. I've never seen them come to the house in summer, only winter. First she was drinking from my dog's pool then the automatic horse waterers. Too bad Rooster chased her away. Taken from my patio doors. I'm off to the chuckwagons races, catch up with y'all later.

The tiny snail understands the importance of drinking lots of water to stay hydrated in the very hot weather.
For Macro Mondays theme 'Drips, Drops and Splashes'.
I purchased a small anthurium houseplant a few weeks ago. The 'flower' is actually a specialised leaf known as a spathe and the central yellow spike is the spadix that holds the tiny true flowers arranged in a spiral. The spadix on this plant was just under 3cm tall.
There was no problem in getting a water drop to balance on the tip of the spadix - what took more trouble was getting the snail to do something amusing before it knocked the water drop off (and I had to start over!).
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

Start of another week and I actually got some things done before falling down the Wombo rabbit hole. This image was prompted by my having to water the outside plants, which in October, I usually don't need to do. Warm and dry and it just doesn't feel like October.
